Maintenance advice 4wd etc..

Recommended Posts

I own a 16 Sierra 4wd I just hit 65k.

2nd owner purchased with 46k.

Had the truck about 1 year now. Only maintenance been done was oil changes, tire rotations.

Trk run fine with the exception of the clunky transmission which the dealer said was normal.

What services is everyone doing with this mileage?

Also is changing out spark plugs @65k recommended, service rep said it close to $489.00 for plugs

Do these prices look right?

The dealership has a bad reputation in town.

How do you service your other vehicles?

If you're happy with what you have done in the past, keep doing it.

$489 for plugs!

I did mine for $24 with a rebate.

Back to your question.

Service differentials and transfer case.

Spark plugs you decide. Owners manual should say replace about 100 K miles. I did mine at about 60 K miles.

Transmission, drop pan, new filter, refill.

Cabin air filter, if you don't know if it has been replaced do it. It will help with air movement. Easy to do yourself.

Engine air filter, if you don't know if it has been done. Easy to do yourself.

If the dealer has a bad reputation find an independent garage.

:)

I may add, when in doubt look up on the net. I replaced a inside door handle on a two door Tahoe a few years ago. I tend to be a bit of a ripper. I end up fixing things do to inpatients. For once in my life I looked it up for instructions. I mean really, how hard can that be. It was totally different than I would have dreamed and really easy. Otherwise I’d probably had a warped door panel. There’s really nothing that’s impossible if you have access to the net.

Others vehicles was service @ Audi/Cadillac which I won't do that anymore.

I think I can do plugs myself cross fingers.

I probably will take your advice on finding another mechanic to do the rest of the maintenance.
Thanks for the advice appreciate it.

Go get some Amsoil and change the fluids in your front and rear differentials, and your transfer case.  Do your oil change too.  Amsoil is the best you can get.

When our changing out the fluids, you will be able to check the magnetic drain plugs.  Front and rear diffs should not have much on them.  Transfer case will have more than you expect but shouldn't have a huge amount of ferrous material on it.

All of these are easy to do at home too with simple tools.  Just be careful with the gasket on the rear diff.

Shouldn't need spark plugs till 100k unless one of them has gone bad.

Check engine coolant too.  If you see reflective specs in it, get that changed.  Should be changed every 5 years or 100k..
