looking for ways to increase HP

i have a 2014 chevy silverado with a 57 series K&N and a outlaw exhaust system, i wanna get long tube headers and a throttle spacer. would I need a performance chip for the headers? and if i put the headers in without the chip would it hurt my engine?

Throttle spacer is a complete waste of money. Zero benefit.

Installing headers without a tune won't hurt anything. You'll get more out of your mods with a tune.

This is how I do it.

No such thing as perfor.ance chips anymore. Get a tuner. Spacers are junk. But intake/tb is worth it. Tune on e85 with those mods is worth good power.

Ok scape the spacer idea. What is the is a good tuner? Thinking Diablo or Edge?

Diablo, Edge and there is a third one that I can't remember the name of right now. They are all made by the same company. Go to their website and chat with them. It's the same freaking guy at all 3 sites! He told me that they are the same.

My truck is not tuned. I'm not a risk taker and don't want to jeopardize my power train warranty.

Handheld tuners are good. They are convenient and easy to use. They also have the ability to display some cool info. For the ultimate performance I would suggest HP Tuners or EFI Live.

My first tune will probably be HP Tuners. They are the only ones that can currently tune the 8 speed trans. Hopefully there will be others by the time I am ready.

1SLOW1500 can tell you all about HP Tuners if you can get him to slow down enough to do it. No offense man but some of your posts are hard to read. Punctuation, caps and grammar are not your specialty. I love the information so please don't take that the wrong way.

HPT is overkill!!!

No, HP Tuners is doing it correctly.

OP, E85 + and a proper tune is what you need before anything else.  That will give a bigger gain than anything else you are considering.

Please, if possible I’d like to hear NON E85 suggestions too...this tuning is all new to me. I know I can convert to E85 with my 6.2 (2018 so tranny tune is too involved) but I have no place to buy E85...well I can but it’s 170 miles away.

No E85 - no worries.  You are probably already running premium fuel as you have the 6.2.  From my reading, it appears that tuning the trans makes the biggest difference to how these trucks perform.  Yes, adding 40hp is great but not if you have torque management stopping you from putting it to the ground.   TM is just one aspect of the trans that can be modified.  I think you need to actually send the TCM in to HP Tuners to be unlocked.  Once completed, they return it to you and you or your tune shop can make the changes to it and the ECM.  It is also possible to purchase a TCM to send to them so that you can use your truck while they are unlocking it.

Thank you, I do only use 93 premium and I appreciate the inputs! I will probably go the route of buying a separate TCM and letting them unlock it

Yes, HPT is overkill for these trucks. I get the impression the OP is not looking to heavily modify his truck. If that’s the case then he can do more than enough with a hand held. And I’m not talking about uploading a canned tune and off he goes. He could do a custom tune with a handheld. Especially the one I suggested.

You cannot tune the 8 speed trans on a 2018 with a handheld.  Period.  Tuning the trans makes the biggest improvement in how these trucks perform.

He does.  User SS502 asked about a tune and he has a 2018 with the 6.2L.

At least I think I am reading that correctly. :shakehead:

    • Did you ever get this worked out? Mike is doing the two start thing now too. This is after a new camera back in December.
    • I’m doing an experiment on a vehicle I don’t have much money in. I’m going by the premise that after they last 100K miles they were no mechanical problems with assembly. Or defects with the parts. With oil changes by the minder for the first 127K miles when I acquired it. I quickly went through low mileage oil changes then settled on 5k oil changes with close to 170K miles on the vehicle currently. I did have the option to turn off the cylinder deactivation. I didn’t on this vehicle because in ECONOMY mode at least half the time. It should be a no brainer frequent oil changes are the key. The manufacturer gets away with the long oil changes with its severe service  maintenance. Just ask them what is normal.
    • Even set to "recirculated", the air pushes out and is hot. I have noticed that sometime it doesn't want to switch between recirculated/vented air. Say it is set to Circulated Air and I want to switch to Vented, when I click the Vented button, it just quickly lights up/clicks and immediatly switches back to Circulated. It's done this a few times now. So maybe it is an actuator getting stuck? But then, that doesn't explain the hot air when everything is off does it?
    • I wonder what the price is out at the coast, Big Sur or other out of the way locations as I bet they are charging quite a premium over the in land pumps.
    • Were you looking at the HD trucks on the GM website or the half tons as that makes all the difference. As far as I know there are only two options for the HD trucks and that is the standard 2 speed transfer case or the 2 speed transfer case that has the added 4 high auto feature and they put that transfer case by default into the LTZ and High Country although its optional in the LT and not sure if its available in the work trucks.    The half tons, that is where its been a total mess in my estimation for a few years now with most trucks below the top trim having the single speed transfer case as standard but with the option of having the two speed such as one would get by choosing the Z71 package, however then not being able to get the two speed transfer case with the towing package unless it was a higher trim truck AND had the 6.2 gas so one could combine the towing package gearing diffs with the two speed transfer case. Having said that if its a trail boss package then it gets the two speed transfer case but not necessarily able to get the tow package as it would depend on trim level and engine chosen. Believe me, people have bought the GM half tons assuming "of course it will have a two speed transfer case" only to find out after when they really pay attention to what they now own .... crap, there is NO low range !.    I don't believe Ford or Ram have gone that way yet with their half tons but like I say its been a few years now that GM has done this with the half tons.
