04 5.3 rough idle after head swap (castech failure)

Hey guys, 

 

I had some bad luck recently with my 2004 silverado z71 5.3. I had the 706 castech heads and they finally gave out on me causing the truck to overheat. Took it to the shop and they wanted 3 grand to do head gaskets using the same heads apparently they were clueless to the TSB on the castech heads. I found a guy that rebuilds heads and picked up a set of 799’s and had them milled .030. It took me 3 weeks off evenings and weekends but I finally got the new heads and gaskets on with every bolt double checked used properly torqued specs/angles etc. I also replaced all lifters,trays, and pushrods, oil sending unit, knock sensors, heater hoses, and upgraded to the larger radiator from 2005 and up trucks LOL. The truck fired up first try and runs great when cold, however when it gets to operating temp the idle is very rough and acts like its missing. Should I be looking for a vacuum leak? any suggestions? Thanks for the help.

Check the PCV valve, fuel venting system? Is it holding a vacuum? That's a few things to check.

What was the head TSB? I have a 04 with the 4.8 so it may not apply but worth checking as you never know. 125,800k miles on it and runs good as the day I bought it except it needs a exhaust manifold bolt repaired on left rear of engine which I'll do once it gets warm. Also have the knock sensor TSB to do on it and replace both knock sensors as I have a code already.

quick update thanks for the replies it ended up being the oxygen sensor on bank 1 before the cat. Replaced with ac delco unit and it cleared the CEL and now idles like it should!

Thanks for the suggestions see above reply in my case it was the driver side pre cat 02 sensor. 2 of my exhaust manifold bolts were broken off on my old 706 heads if they are flush weld a nut on top and try to slowly back it out. Glad you got it fixed.   Just curious as to how many miles are on the truck.  The valve covers looked really clean.  Also the cylinders looked in great shape as well.  Not much carbon build up.

173K miles. I am OCD for changing the oil on time or EARLY lol. The first photo is of the motor after I pulled the heads. There was quite a bit of carbon buildup that took quite of bit of elbow grease to remove but I figured I was already there why not do it. What it did notice is that there was almost 0 sludge buildup at all. The power difference now with the new heads is very noticeable or it could be its just because it hasn't been that clean since new. It has been a couple of weeks and I just changed the oil for the second time get the residual dirt/grime that may have accumulated during the repair. No CEL, no issues and I just upgraded my 105 alternator to a 145 amp.

I change the oil every 3 months or 3kmiles at the dealers expense. I was a sucker when I bought it Jan 15, 2005 brand new but oil has went up and they still and always will change my oil for free per the contract. Engine goes out I'll put another in and let them change that oil free as they look at the VIN# in the dash so I'll drive it till I can't keep the cab from freezing me out. Cheaper than buying a new or newer car either way. [emoji16]

I have the pro maxx kit which I'll use when I do it this summer. Have to get new air compressor wired up so I can use the small 1/4 drive Ratchet with a drill adapter on it.

I'll use the kit to make side money as well for other vehicles as once you get it lined up on the vehicle and step drill the heads then you only need to remove the last remaining bits of threads and chase it with a thread chaser before installing a new gasket kit.

Not sure if I should use the Mini Ductor for the remaining ones as they use Loctite for OEM assembly of the engine and I don't want to melt the aluminum heads. I'll need to check some temps on stuff before I make that decision though. IF I can loosen the Loctite by heating the bolts then that would save time and possibly broken exhaust manifold bolts.

I'll make a decision real soon as I have to do the knock sensors and need to pull the upper intake Plenum which would be the ideal time since if I have to pull a head by some odd reason this would save me time and money on gasket kits.

    • I like the idea.  I would pick diesel if I had a choice. I need pictures though.
    • I've installed cheap eBay new aftermarket digitizers before.  They work.  Did a bunch of Cadillac CUE (aka Cadillac's MyLink) for someone years ago.  They all worked fine after the repair.    That number 22740886, that is a component part # for GM.  You can use it to search, but its not something that's obtainable at the dealer level.     So pretty much any of these will work - 2015 Colorado Digitizer for sale | eBay
    • Black bumper and the later years Z-71 style color matched grille.
    • You can install tailpipes that direct the exhaust sideways vs the OEM one that goes straight back. There are several on the market, do you own research. HOWEVER, you need to make sure the Venturi vents are still intact, otherwise it will throw a engine code. There is a sensor somewhere that detects back pressure on the exhaust. And if it doesn't collect the correct metrics, it will throw the truck into limp mode. 
    • "Teardown" is complete. Head surfaces are clean and ready, new intake is prepped and ready. Coolant drained and water pump is removed, radiator is removed, new hoses and pump are ready.   The replacement intake is also from a '95 (with I think 260k, the odometer said). Noticeably less pitting where it covers the rear coolant passages. I'm not sure if that's a tribute to more frequent use, more frequent coolant changes/upkeep, or if the intake was machined at some point. But it appears I found a good one.   My coolant hoses were original, and the lower hose still retained the factory spring inside. It's not really rusty, but it's got deposits all over it. Unsure if I should re-install it (will thoroughly clean it first). Someone said hose technology has gotten better since 1995 (has it?) and I don't need the spring. I think modern EPDM is what made those hoses last from 1995-2026, so it's a question of how much suction can the water pump really pull, and will it collapse the hose without a spring?   I'm stopped and waiting for parts, however.   When I first brought the truck home, the fan was intermittently hitting the radiator shroud. I could see someone had monkeyed with the shroud (put a bunch of cardboard as a spacer between the upper/lower shroud halves. Someone said the motor mounts have likely failed and the engine has sagged. I wasn't sure I believed that. The engine is really solid in its mounts: To remove the old intake I *just* nearly permanently welded to the heads with freshly cured RTV and gasket snot two weeks ago, I literally had to use the arms on my lift and a chain with a bolt attached to the intake to pull it loose. It almost picked the front of the truck off the ground before ....scuuuuuuuuuuup.... I could actually hear the gaskets tearing and it broke loose and the whole truck settled back down. Motor barely moved.   SO, those parts I'm waiting on... The lower radiator mounts/bushings had completely failed. The radiator needs to be insulated from the rad support, and the bushings help the rad stand at the correct height. The plastic "baffle" was also destroyed at some point. Someone had attached the shroud to it incorrectly, overlapping a joint that should have been underlapped, creating another suspect issue potentially causing things to hit the fan. Broken tabs, side is busted off, and it's perma-formed/bent where it was jimmied incorrectly.   The baffle? Unobtainum. Long since discontinued from GM, of course. Aftermarket/capa/chinese? Also unobtanium. In GM's infinite wisdom, it appears there are at least two different variations whether the Blazer is 2 or 4 door, and I can't yet tell if they shared the same part with the S-pickups. Plan B, if I can't find a viable used one, will be to create a bracket to re-assemble the critical joint I need to seal a gap with the shroud. But that will bug me, it won't be...perfect.   The water pump bolts appear to have been installed with...plumber's putty. I guess, sure, if it works...? I've found a few "backyard fixes" like that. Someone's been here before....   If I can't find someone to jam bamboo under my fingernails to fill my free time this week I think I'll install the driver's power window motor and replace the rear door speaker that's inop. I've got a genuine GM "9.5" ohm working replacement. Why GM used a non-standard resistance....nevermind. Of course they did, you can get more sound from a cheap factory amp that way.   And the saga goes on...
