Simple Secondary Cargo Light Switch

Well, relatively simple at least.

I was tired of having to go into the truck to turn the cargo lights on and off, so I wanted to add a secondary switch in the bed. I searched and found multiple results about adding a secondary set of lights, which was not what I was looking for, so here's my solution.

I wanted to add a secondary switch to turn on/off the factory cargo lights, and retain the 10 minute auto-shut off. Through some searching I found that the switch in the truck works by pulsing a momentary ground to a pin on the BCM, which is pretty easy to replicate/extend.

Materials:

Wire. I used some red/black 2-wire, I'll explain why later.

A small scrap of solid core wire.

2 waterproof push button momentary switches.

Here's what I did:

Soldered a small scrap of solid core wire to both leads to the red/black 2-wire. This made it easier to tap into the BCM.

Tapped into pin 18 of the blue plug on the BCM. There's a solid gray wire on that pin.

Ran the wire out of the cabin (using this method:)

and then down the underside, following a large bundle of wires and using some wire clips that GM/Chevy was nice enough to leave available for use.

Popped out one of the cargo tie down plugs, and ran the wires through. Here's why I used the red/black 2-wire - measure enough wire out to go back through the hole and then under the bed to the other side, then cut. Now we have enough wire to install a switch on both sides of the bed.

Drilled the plug to fit the push button momentary switch, and installed the switch in the plug.

Cut ONLY ONE of the wires at the drivers side hole, and wire it to one lead of the switch.

Connect the scrap of wire you just cut off (red in this case) to the other lead of the switch. Run both the red scrap and the black wire back through the hole, and reinstall the plug.

I didn't take any pictures of this part unfortunately, but run the red scrap of wire to any grounding point and secure.

Then run the black wire to a cargo tie down plug on the other side and repeat the steps to wire and ground it.

Then enjoy your 2 new readily accessible cargo light switches!

This activates the same as the cargo light switch in the truck, so any modifications you've made like the reverse lights on with the cargo lights will work just the same as if you pressed  the switch in the truck, and retain the 10 minute auto shut off.

Any comments/questions/clarifications please let me know and I'll do my best to get back to you!

way to go, that is how it should have been from the factory.

Okay pardon me for having a brain fart but what if I only want 1 switch on the driver side?  I guess I just don't understand tying the black and red together with 1 lead where it goes into the BCM.

Also any info on the switch you used?

Def a cool mod! But I still like the cargo/reverse diode mod better. It's way easier, plus you can use your key fob as a switch.

Key fob works great for me, but the lights don’t stay on for 10 mins like it would with his method.

Yeah, I just keep hitting the key fob as needed to keep it on. You can increase the duration the lights stay on, in the radio.

And as always... Enjoy your ride!

If you just wanted to do one switch, you could just use a single wire run from the BCM back to the switch instead.

I’d love to do this mod to my 2015 Sierra. Can anyone tell me which pin out I need to use to feed the momentary switch at the bed?

    • I find it amusing the OP doesn’t realize this threads heading includes several engines. He should have posted in the off topic section if he wanted a more narrow focus. I really appreciate and find amusing that he actually pointed out one of my many vehicles. The Odyssey. That happens to use 0-20 oil. I love pushing his buttons.
    • Maybe, but it seems he is the only one that has backed up data to prove what he is stating. I think he is doing this more because he enjoys it and wants to get the information out to us. He's got the knowledge and access to the proper equipment and having the funds doesn't hurt.  I would love to do what he is doing and would do it if and when I hit the Powerball.  I'm not a Tribologist by any means but love to learn what I can.   I would bet there would be doubting people out there if a completely independent lab with high quality work and highly respected in the automotive industry, put out information like this.  The world can't be pleased, one just has to take the information that they are given, do more of their own research to find actual lab data to back up what they are trying to figure/find out.  Most don't bother, they just want to believe what they first see.     I don't have the minimax but my 6.2 in my 2019 Silverado with 64k miles shows excellent UOA results with 0w-20 and for my own purposes 5w-20.  Since not much of a change using 5w. I liked the data sheet information on the SS 5w-20 and figured I would give it a try.  Still the same viscosity at 100℃.   In the end we all just do what makes us happy, life is too short to get upset over trivial social media.   On a side note, I do feel GM has dropped the ball and just cares about the bottom dollar and not quality anymore.  "Like a Rock" has been long gone.  Seems "Built Ford Tough" has as well.
    • Better than stock but that's like putting lipstick on a pig
    • Hello, my 3 month old Sierra Elevation wont recognize a trailer with electric brakes? All the lights work correctly, but no power to the brakes?   This is the factory installed brake controller. If you manually push the knob, the display shows the power % but does not light up like my 2022 silverado.   I have an appointment with the dealer, but was checking to see if anyone else has seen this issue.    Thanks,
    • Been using SS 0w-20 from new, but wanted to change to the 5w-20 because I liked the data on the data sheet, to me it seems like a little better product. But as you can see, not much difference. This is also with running a mix of 10 gallons E85 to a tank topped with 93. It isn't a flex fuel vehicle so any higher I get a CEL for running lean on both banks. Yes my mileage takes a hit. Instead of 20 mpg I normally get on trips I get 17mpg. This is also using EaO17 filter.  What is amazing is I have the AMSOIL cone filter on it since I have the GM Performance intake installed and that air filter has 44k miles on it.  I just take it out and shop vac it off once a year.  I use the upholstery tool on my shop vac.  Works well.
