Got the fuel injector flow rate recall programming done this morning. So far no noticeable difference in how the truck drives. Idk what the programming even did to be honest. It was free though. 
 

As for the waste gate actuator TSB. They said my truck has the latest ECM software and there’s no update that needs to be performed. Even though my truck made the goosehonk screech when I turned the engine off after I pulled in the service bay. Lol. Oh well.

Well take a look at my oil analysis data from 5700 miles on RLI, first run. While it used a qt its protecting very well and MAYBE its cleaning capability will help PCV/CCV sucking of oil out the tailpipe after its burned. 

 

I ordered two more cases after these results above.

CEL popped up yesterday on my 2.7L when I was 2 hours from home it was a solid light, so I wasn't too worried. Truck seemed to run fine.

 

When I got home I ran the code and it came up as P0420 - Catalytic Efficiency Low. I figure all that oil consumption is starting to clog up the cat. Right under 118,000 miles.

 

I cleared the code and will see if it comes back, if so it may be time for a a new catalytic converter.

fondupot that is the same code and i had an air flow code when the fine oil separator failed . it is on the back of the engine and a pain in a$$ to change, but i would change it first, a cat is not cheap and the separator is under a 100 bucks. nothing to loose but some time

i should add that 3 months before i fixed the problem i was using a quart every 1k miles and was fighting GM to fix it. the last 3 weeks before i finally got the part that GM said was not available i was using a quart every 600 miles, so my cat got drowned. it has been 30k miles since i fixed it and the codes never came back. check your freeze frame data, for me it always set the code at 45 to50 mph and around 1400 rpm, as soon as i let off the gas it would trip the code and it would only do it at that speed

Thank goodness I have never had that code. My ring seal must be optimized. 

 

@silveradosid  what is your oil consumption now post repairs and some time on the odo?

i am back to using a quart every 4500 miles, which is when the olm is at 40 percent. it has been this way since i bought it. i still have oil leaking out of the pipe that comes from the turbo to the after cooler. i have always changed the oil at 40 percent anyways. i did this on my 2014 and my son drives it now with 210k miles. oil is cheap repairs are not even if you can do it yourself

Absolutely and thank you. I use about a qt in 5000-6000 depending on oil base and formula.  Its seems Mobil1 and Amsoil Signature series use less. 

 

Delo 10w30 no zddp used less but it was inadequate for lower wear rates and its GRP II+ base oil so it tends to leave a deposit.

PS I have 70,000 miles almost now and had a emergency where I drove the truck up and over La Veta pass on US 160 in Southern CO averaging 85 mph hitting 100 mph limit over and over and trans temp never above 210F running Amsoil ATF. This is at 8000' msl to 10,000 msl where once you get heat in that turbo it ain't releasing. I was in 4x4 last 15 miles and drove 70 mph sideways on snow, sand, rock to house.  Hasn't used a drop of RLI 5w30 in 1500 miles so far this change.

i don't know why but where i am in canada RLI oil is double the price of mobile 1. i just but a 6 pack and filter from the dealer, it cost me 64 bucks canadian to do an oil change, and doing it at 40% on the olm it doesn't have time to break down, i hope

It's shipped up there from Ohio and its customs BS costs.........sad

Interesting. Is on the back of the engine? I found the procedure on my ALLDATA account and boy it looks like a doozy.

Truck has an appointment Monday to go to my shop for a further diagnosis. I tried CataClean and reset the code. It stayed off for about 300 miles, then came back on this morning.

    • Monthly payment is only part of the equation. With today's prices and interest rates, I'd look at the total monthly cost: payment, insurance, registration, fuel, maintenance, and expected repairs. A vehicle that fits comfortably into your budget is usually the better choice than stretching for a higher trim. I've also kept my vehicles longer over the past few years. New cars have gotten expensive enough that driving one for 10+ years, while staying on top of maintenance, often ends up being the most cost-effective approach.

    • Thanks newdude!  By the time manual selection is needed, I'm probably too much of a control-freak to depend on the transmission sensing braking to activate automatic downshifting.  I would be anticipating the situation and already be manually downshifting.   This truck replaced a 2004.5 LLY diesel with the Allison 5-speed.  Putting it in T/H made noticeable differences (when the torque converter locked, upshift points, downshift behavior).  On this 2024 gasser with the 10L1000 I haven't been able to detect much, if any, difference.  Ok, I can never tell now when the torque converter locks up.  But I also don't notice differences in shifting.  For downhills, I've probably already manually downshifted by then anyway.  Since it's also more awkward (than the 2004.5) to engage/disengage I don't even bother.  Or maybe it doesn't really matter with just a 3k lb. camper in the bed?   Thanks also for the list of reasons the charging system might select various voltages.  However, what I am seeing doesn't fall into any of those categories.  It very definitely, and very consistently, rises after coasting/braking.  Maybe not immediately, but not very long after coasting/braking.  Very consistently drops voltage when no longer coasting/braking.  It might also be interacting with the camper battery charging (I might disconnect the camper and see if it changes the charging behavior).  I also need to recheck turning on headlights for when I want to force it to charge the camper.   Another JR, in June I converted the camper to LiFePO4.  Since it's not a good idea to try to charge lithiums directly using truck, I installed a Victron Orion XS DC-DC charger (which BTW is AMAZING!!).  Being cheap, I only had to buy that one item (besides the battery, of course) to do the conversion.  The camper OEM 120v battery charger (only 19 years old and works perfectly) and the truck feed the input to the DC-DC charger (not at the same time).  But I didn't want the camper charger feeding back to the truck so I kept the old separator.  I considered replacing the separator with a 30amp diode but that means more work and might add another 1/2 volt drop.  One thing that surprised me was the voltage drop over the long 10awg wire run, so I can only charge smoothly at 8 amps (because the DC-DC charger is completely configurable).  Another reason I don't want an added voltage drop with the diode.  I might also be a little lazy but all this work is being done under the sink with a small cabinet opening.    
    • apparently CA smog is (or at least was)  checking that the vehicle is using the oem and/or a ca smog approved tune, so I expect you'll fail inspection doing it.
    • yes, leaking exhaust will mess up o2 sensor readings, which in turn messes up fuel trims.
