I have had my truck for 3 years now. This forum had already prepared me to keep a close eye on my headliner and shark fin antenna because of its habit of leaking. We had a pretty good rain storm Sunday night and when getting into the truck Mon morning, I caught a couple drops coming from just to the right of the roof console. I have no idea how long water has been getting in but it was finally enough to show up. So I call up my dealer and find they cant get it in until Thur morning. It then proceeds to rain Mon night and all day Tue with some pretty heavy stuff. I get back in this morning (Wed) and it is no longer just on the right side but on the windshield side of console and the left side of console and you can actually see the water line on the headliner. And the chances are real good for more rain again today or tonight. FML! Luckily when I got the truck,  (long story) I was able to convince GM to extend my bumper to bumper to 5 years and 60650 miles and I confirmed it would be covered under warranty by the dealer during my call to make appointment.

My concern though is long term damage to the inside due to the leak. The water has gathered around the console and I'm worried about corrosion developing there. Also with standing water, the possibility of mold starting to form inside the headliner. My 4 year old son has issues with being sensitive to stuff like mold. He spends a lot of time with me in the truck going places. How do I need to approach this? What are the chances of a new headliner? And what about the possibility of corrosion not only to the wiring and components but the steel roof as well?

I feel for you buddy, I have a 2015 Sierra with 50,000 miles on it I've had the antenna leaking since the truck had 235 miles on it. It has had for antennas replaced three microphones and tons of aggravation of having to load and unload my truck for usually a three-day visit when I dropped it off. It has been the only thing wrong with this truck and I can't seem to get rid of it just because of this, however I am beyond sick and tired of this. They even put the new antenna design on with the gasket that doesn't have the Gap at the top where it would collect water. The dealer is beyond frustrated. I am beyond beyond frustrated however I'm glad that I got the service manager 2 extend my warranty specifically on this part since it has never ever been leak free since I've owned the truck. Thank God I have a garage and I can use a different vehicle when I know we're going to have some major rains, however yesterday was not one of those days within 20 minutes of being outside it began to week from my microphone down the pillar and into the driver side fuse panel. I brought the truck directly to my Chevy dealer and demanded a replacement vehicle find them for the day or as long as it takes for them to fix this freaking problem once and for all.

Okay this is weird since I can't use my truck for work I've been doing a lot of paperwork today and the dealer just called me and said my truck is done and they said this time it wasn't the antenna it was the sunroof gasket was misaligned and causing the problem. I highly suspect this is a bunch of bullshit and we'll talk with the service tech directly when I get there. So in light of your questioning on the antenna issue yes it is a problem always has been and probably always will be unless you get the new antenna put on and then keep an eye on it from there.

I also discussed the mold issue and other potential problems and my mechanic friend told me that there is not much that could really mold as far as a fabric in the headliner because it is a plastic base material and as long as it's aired out dried it should be of no problem. However I will keep an eye on it. I also suffer from post health conditions from a Cancer and am very cautious and skeptical of what people tell me about mold and issues like that so I pretty much check on it as deep as I can.

You may also need to check your fuse panel on the driver side and passenger side if water has been running down the pillar and any electrical components that are up inside the headliner itself as in the antenna connections the microphone and the lights that might be in your console if your model has that.

Good luck with your situation and I will keep everybody updated on mine so far four antenas and now they say it was a leaky sunroof this time.

I honestly doubt it's the sunroof.

Make sure they install the new style shark fin that has the redesigned hard plastic gasket and make sure they put the Gap to the bottom instead of the top, which I could not believe they designed that way as it would hold water underneath the plastic shark fin cover. Frustration beyond belief.

Other than that this truck has been beyond perfect with 50,000 miles on it all I do is general maintenance.

I would just bring it in like normal and show them that the headliner is stained. If they do what they are supposed to then it should be replaced and the leak fixed.

I took the truck to dealer yesterday. I originally called on Monday and was told they were backed up a bit with other vehicles leaking so Thur was the first available appointment. I explained all my concerns including the headliner and it sounds like a new headliner is strong possibility. I also discussed a new antenna with the opening in the front.  No guarantee was given on that. They gave me a free loaner to use until mine is done and it might be ready on Monday. The loaner is a 2019 Double Cab Silverado 4x4. Although it has a few options I wish I had on my 16, overall my 16 has more options that I like. It is keyless push button start and I really dont like that. It also does something weird. When driving for awhile and coming to a complete stop say at, a stop light, the engine turns off. As soon as you take your foot off the brake, the starter fires up the engine again. It took me.a while to figure out what was going on. I noticed the shudder while leaving one stop but wasnt sure why it happened. Then today, I noticed it again while I had my window open and heard a starter. It wasnt until the next time it happened that I realized it was this truck's starter. Not a fan of that as there are way too many stop signs and stop lights in my neighborhood and I can easily see the starter being stressed after way too many restarts. I am also definitely not a fan of double cabs and miss the space I have on my Crew Cab. As long as this leak gets fixed properly, I see myself keeping this truck for a very long time...

There should be a button on the dash you push to disable the Auto stop/start. You will have to push it every time you start the truck if you don’t want to use it. I believe it’s the letter A with a circle around it on the newer GM vehicles.

My 17 had a leak a few times. Replaced the shark fin antenna twice. The 2nd time I put a bead of clear silicone around it to make sure it wouldn't leak again. It leaked again anyway. This time I put a water hose on the truck to find the leak myself. Turns out it was the sunroof seal leaking. Dealer replaced the sunroof seal and haven't had a problem since.
