2018 Sierra---Keep the 20's or go 18's?

2018 GMC Sierra SLT w/ Z71 package.  The ride to me is fine for now until I take it out on rougher fire roads.  I would like to gain some overall clearance and go with a more aggressive tire.  Mainly a daily driver but will be out on unimproved fire roads from time to time.

Should I keep the 20" wheels I have now and simply go with a more aggressive tire?

Goodyear Wrangler 275/55/20 now, so going with a 275/60/20 would get me into a 33" tire for about $1k.

or

I have a line on a set of 2019 AT4 take off wheels in 18" for +/- $1k.  They come with like new 265/65/18 tires which I would sell and maybe go with 275/70/18?  That would give me a 33.2" tire.  So wheels + new tires = appx $2k

I only have 10k miles on this truck and trying to accomplish this on the best budget I can.  I assume I would need some sort of level kit as well?

Anyone made this change?  Wish they did?  Did it and regretted it?

Thanks!!

I personally like 18 inch wheels on 33 inch tires for both looks and comfort. To me its a perfect look. I run 275/70/18 tires on +1 offset wheel. Im not sure what the offset is on the wheels your looking at but 33's MAY rub if the offset is to positive or to negative. If you stay around a 0 offset with a level you will clear. I had no rubbing when I had a 2 inch level with that tire size. I did tie back the carpet though with zip ties in the fender wells. I now run a 4 inch bds lift.

Always start with the lift amount. Then read specs on kit. Then pick tires.
But as you say off road the right answer is small rim big tire. It will eat up more bumps and give better ride. You can also air down more if needed.
Good isn't cheap and cheap isn't good.
Buddy just added $4000 king shocks on his lifted f350.

Get some Cooper ATP’s from Discount Tire only place that sells them throw them on the 20’s $800 and you are done, I live on a farm and make 1000 mile trips often wouldn’t drive on anything else.

Thinking the Motofab 2" frt level and the Cooper ATP (or maybe the Falken Wild Peaks) and be done.  $716 on the Coopers and $795 on the Falkens.

I would like to do the 18" AT4 wheels but that will add another $1k and not sure I will really notice (need) that.

I had the ATP’s on my 2014 SLT, loved them. I used to work for Falken as a race photographer I hate their truck tires, gave a set to my son he took them off and gave them away he hated them so much. I will be putting ATP’s on my truck as soon as my black chromed stock 20” AT4 wheels get here. I had Coopers on a sports car I had,  they were way better than the expensive tires they replaced.

Good info, thank you!  My biggest concern is the upcoming snow season.

I have used Cooper tires.

AT3

ATP

Currently Star Fires, a highway tire.

Live rural in Colorado Mountains.

I don't off road.

The Star Fires have done well in winter with 4 x 4.

 No complaints.

Used to get Goodrich All Terrains until I thought they got to pricey.

Best budget move would be add new tires to your current wheels. Once those tires need replaced, you’ll have had plenty of time to decide if you want/need to keep 20s or go down.

If you don’t go with an LT tire, you’ll be under 1k with 275/60. I went with non LT duratracs in 275-60 this go around, they’ve been fine for my needs the last year or so I’ve ran them. I’ve had no problems anyplace I had been with LT k02 in the same size, and I feel the Goodyear’s do better in the snow too.

I’m not sure 17” wheels will fit over the front brakes.

i run 18” to help eat the bumps because I’m off road or on gravel a lot. Taller sidewalls protect the wheels more as well. Especially from curb rash, if you’ve got kid drivers...

For normal driving, I have found that catching a nail or something that creates a leak flattens a low profile tire pretty rapidly, as in you've got seconds to pull over and stop before you damage the wheel.

18 inch wheels with a tire that has more sidewall gives more time.

My choice would be to keep your stock 20's and buy Michelin tires.  Great look, great traction and great ride!
