Mobil 1 Extended Oil filter - use for 2 oil changes?

Just seeing if anyone has done this before? I havent but im just looking for any experience if it has been done.

M1 extended oil filter states up to 20,000 miles between changes. I change my oil about every 6500 miles with M1 0w-20, at which point the dash shows 25% oil life left.

Is it a waste to use this filter or can this filter be left in and just change the oil, giving the filter  2 uses?

 

Just interested in what people may thing, i have always changed the filter and oil at the same time. Im at 125k miles.

Why change the oil if you are going to leave nearly a quart of old oil and not change the filter? What oil are you using?

Personally I change oil and filter at the same time...every 15,000 miles with M1 oil and filter. The 2001 has 337K miles, never had a valve cover off, bought it new. That is proof enough for me that GOOD oil and filters is the key.

Your oil life goes that far or you just ignore it? Most i got was 7500 miles when it was 10% left.

I ignore it. The OLM is just a count down clock that GM put in to remind people to change the oil. GM set the meter on the low side to compensate for dino or synthetic blends, depending on what year the vehicle was made.

And where and how it is driven. 15k won't work for a lot of people. It's a huge gamble. It's working for you and your circumstances so keep it up I guess.

If you're that lazy, why change the oil/filters at all?  Just drive it for 2-3 years and trade it on a shiny new one, to dump the old truck on some poor unsuspecting soul who needs a break and prays they're getting a good deal.

Wow nice guy. I seem to remember back in the day it was common practice with frequent oil changes to do the filter every other. I didn’t but common it was. Before cylinder deactivation I wouldn’t have a problem going extended. My 06 trailblazer with the LS2 the oil change light came on between 12-15 K. Myself and scores of my customers have done extended with Amsoil since the 90s. Not just on our trucks, also high dollar land clearing equipment. No problems ever with oil analysts done. I love it when people who think they know what their talking about. Make juvenile statements, such as yourself.

Hahaha ya'll are assuming im doing this... Its just a discussion. My oil gets changed every 7500 max with new filter.

Im just seeing IF anyone did this or would since it says 20k miles guaranteed for the filter.

You ever get oil tested? Would be interesting to see what 15k mile oil looks like. In that case we are all wasting money on premature oil changes.

As it's just a 'friendly' discussion.... 

 

How would one know if the filter failed AND more importantly, is on continuous bypass considered failure? How would you prove your claim? 

 

WHAT does Mobil do to the filter to nearly triple the filter life? 

 

I can tell you what Briggs & Stratton did to make a 3.5 hp motor a 4.5 hp motor! They changed the 'sticker'!

Yes we did. Skip filter changes BUT these were 2,500 to 3,000 mile OCI's. Skipping an underwear change for a day isn't the same thing as skipping it for a month.
