Mobil 1 Extended Oil filter - use for 2 oil changes?

I know your not talking to me but....yes I have and why I change on 5K OCI's. If you've ever tracked your TBN vs TAN and not just TBN......you might not go so long...maybe.....maybe not....

I have to admit. If it wasn’t for this website and mostly you’re post. I would have went extended on my 14 GMC after warranty. One size doesn’t fit all. I never ask my brother, I bet he’s going by old research and going extended on his Ram. Also with cylinder deactivation. I’m sure he still analyzing, I’ll have to ask. Modern engines still are durable, but frequent oil changes are more important.

My original question would be.. Should i be buying the extended filter or just normal Mobil 1, since i dont change past 7k max.

Wondering what you guys use as filter.

This is a no brainer answer change the filter when you change the oil. I m not leaving dirty oil in my engine just to save whatever on a filter.

Changing oil and not changing oil filter is akin to taking a bath/shower and putting your dirty underwear back on.  The sign of a cheapskate.

Nothing wrong with going 15k mile OCI's if using a good full synthetic and a good filter & the vehicle is mostly seeing normal highway miles. (assuming everything else is in good order) 
Oil doesn't see a hard life in modern automotive V8 engines & good full synthetics hold up quite well for a long time.  Very few engine failures these days are oil related, unless the oil/filter was never changed, or it ran out of oil.

Many people are firm about changing every 3000 or 5000 or somewhere in there, saying "It's cheap insurance" ........... None of of those folks have actually done the math to see if it really is cheap insurance. Turns out, it isn't.
You basically spend roughly the cost of a replacement engine over the life of the vehicle.  The guy with the 10 or 15 k miles OCI's is getting the same engine life as the guy doing them at 3 or 5k miles & the 10-15k guy ends up with thousands more $ in his pocket. These numbers accumulate across all successive vehicles.

Accelerated OCI's are great for the companies that sell oil, not so great for the consumer.

 All these modern GM v8 engines have a realistic life expected span of  ~ 300 k miles when used normally. That's 100 oil changes for you high frequency guys. At ~ $40 a pop for good full synthetic, that's $4000 in oil changes. Probably a lot more for you guys paying expensive dealers to do it for you; maybe as much as $6000 or more, over the 300k life of the vehicle. This doesn't include all the extra personal time you have to invest in this.

Say an hour per change - 100 hours @ how much per hour do, or did you earn?

Now compare that to the vehicle done every 8000 miles;

Total oil changes 37.5

Total cost at $40 each is $1500, or $2250 @ $60 plus only 37.5 hours of your personal time.

The 3000 mile guy has now overspent between $2500 and $3750. Plus 62.5 hours of personal time @ ?$/Hr. That's a replacement engine right there.

 

Jus' sayin. The math doesn't lie.

 

To those who might argue that they never keep a vehicle that long;...... it doesn't matter. The math rolls over into every vehicle you own & keeps adding up. Over a lifetime of driving, many folks are probably spending as much as $10,000 or $15,000 on un-necessary oil changes. Great for the companies that facilitate that, but no benefit to the consumer.


I find it a bit ironic that the accelerated OCI guys are essentially spending the cost of a replacement engine, while trying to avoid doing just that. :)

That was my argument until cylinder deactivation engines from the 90s until recently. Being an Amsoil dealer and heavy equipment operator and dealership. Why did GM add capacity for oil and lower oil change intervals? While Honda and Toyota went the other way? I think cylinder deactivation change the game. My old truck and new Toyota still go extended. My wife’s Genesis and Acura don’t. If I still had my GMC I wouldn’t go extended. I don’t think it would go the mileage you suggested extended. So the math wouldn’t add up.

It really shouldn't be an issue. Even with a bit of extra mechanical complexity as far as the valvetrain goes, there's nothing in there that's going to degrade the oil. The engines that are hardest on oil are high revving motorcycles that share oil between engine and the trans. They put the oil thru a lot of shear strain in the gear box, with the additional strain of dealing with a wet clutch, not to mention an engine that can spin to 12-15k rpm or more. Those forces are what kills oils. 
Slow revving big V8's are a walk in the park for any good full synthetic.

I do the OLM intervals in my own truck, mostly because it's still under warranty. I'd have no issue extending it by a few '000km later on.

We tested with our own stuff in the 90s with Amsoil. We even backed customers equipment. We were that confident. Keep us posted when you go extended with your truck.

I just installed the mobil 1 extended life filter but still plan to change it out at my next oil change in 7500k.  They're like 8 bucks at Walmart.

Mobil1 has great advertisement and marketing,
I’d go with Wix 10255XP, excellent filtering performance catching small as 20 microns, Mobil1 extended filters can’t touch it.

M1 extended oil filter states up to 20,000 miles between changes. I change my oil about every 6500 miles with M1 0w-20, at which point the dash shows 25% oil life left.

Is it a waste to use this filter or can this filter be left in and just change the oil, giving the filter  2 uses?

 

Just interested in what people may thing, i have always changed the filter and oil at the same time. Im at 125k miles.

I'm sure there have been individuals that have changed the oil but left the filter on.  I have not.

 

The best thing to do is see where your oil condition sits by doing a use oil analysis.  This will tell you if going longer is beneficial. 

 

The last oil change on our 2016 suburban with AMSOIL ASM 0w-20 and EaO17 filter was at 15k miles and it showed that the filter was fine. The insoluble level was normal.  So that shows the filter was doing it's job and was not going into by-pass.  The EaO17 is rated for 25k miles or one year and filters down to 20 microns at 98.7% efficiency. 

 

Which for most an oil filter shouldn't go into by-pass since modern oil is so much better than oils of even just 10 yrs ago.  They are keeping the inside of the engine cleaner even with AFM, VVT.

I wouldn't do extended drains with a direct injected, cylinder deactivation, variable valve train, chain driven, truck. If it was a port injected, non AFM engine, then ok. 

 

I cant even imagine how much oil you'd burn through with one of these engines...with the Jets spraying on those deactivated cylinders...the low tension rings...the high pressure fuel blasting in those cylinders and the fuel getting into that oil. The soot buildup on the chain rollers.  The low speed pre ignition. I mean the game has changed with modern engines. When I drain the oil on my truck at 5,000, I've already added 3/4 a quart...and the oil looks dirty when I drain it. My wife's port injected Honda CRV doesn't use a drop after 6,500 miles and looks clean. I've gone 8,000 miles on it, but I won't go more than 5,000 on a direct injection engine anymore.
