PCV valve - preventive maintenance

Does it make sense to change out a PCV valve as part of a preventive maintenance routine?

 

Truck is a 2014 GMC Sierra Denali 6.2L with 96k miles in 5 years of daily driving.

Yeah man, I'd say 100k is a good time to replace it. Curious,  how's the truck been overall for the 100k? Any major issues?

Truck is running strong. Powertrain has been solid. Only powertrain issue was weeping oil cooler lines which were replaced recently under the 5yr/100k warranty. 

 

Otherwise, a lot of the well known issues for the K2 trucks. Including: loose driver’s seat, cab leak, several seat haptic motor failures, AC condenser failure, intermittent electric power steering glitches, etc. 

 

I’m at 96k miles and just had my powertrain warranty expire at the beginning of this month (5 years). I want to keep the truck at least another 1-2 years so looking at preventive maintenance things to take care of. All fluids have been changed recently. Spark plugs also replaced recently.

Curious if you looked at an extended warranty? I’ve never bought one before and generally don’t see the need, but might consider one for my ‘16 when powertrain expires in 2022/100k, unless that’s sufficient time to see a lot more high mileage trucks around than the low mileage problems endemic to any forum.

Maybe try to see if it's a problem?

 

When I bought my '04 Sierra 4 years ago, I changed my PCV valve, and after getting it out (it's a press-fit into the valve cover, not the older style that you can pull out from a rubber grommet), and I found three things:

-parts shops didn't have the right valve, had to order it through a dealer and fix the one I took out so I could use it until the new one came in

-it's just a fixed-orifice style valve, not the rattle can type

-there was no sign of any kind of clogging in the 10 year old valve

 

You can change it, but you will likely find that the one in the truck is perfectly fine.

you'll know its gone bad when you have a white foamy oil residue under the oil fill cap, your mechanic will tell you your head is warped and needs machining. then he'll take your money and install a new pcv valve for $5

Where’s the PCV Valve located on a 2017 Silverado 5.3 engine?

these trucks dont have a pvc valve that is service able, it is designed into the block/valve covers.

not correct, its in the intake manifold drivers side .. I believe it is replaceable
