Just hit 30,000 miles on my 2017 Sierra Denali 6.2L and I have not used any oil, nada.  Currently 10,000 on this oil change (5,000 to go) and the level is still where is was 10,000 miles ago.  I change oil once a year which comes to approx. 15,000 miles and I use 100% Synthetic (AMSOIL 0W-20 Signature since 5,000 mi).   This is the 3rd vehicle I have owned with AFM  (2010, 2015) and NONE of them used oil.  Am I lucky or is it my choice of using the best oil?  I am sure it the oil I use but continue to pinch pennies and but whats good enough.

PS, using same brand of oil for over 40 yrs.

One would think that an engine consuming oil would be a bad thing and that the EPA would step in.  Consuming oil at 1qt per 2k miles or under for that matter I would think would poison the CAT's after a while.

A reason that ZDDP and phosphorus were reduced to keep from contaminating the emission system.

Another thing is the massive thread on here about catch cans.  A major debate as to if it is needed or not and for those using one and the amount of fluid it catches over time is one way to prove the engine isn't operating at an optimum level in regards to burning clean. At least that is how I see it.  If the rings were sealing properly there wouldn't be a need for a catch can.

As with all things mass produced there are going to be issues.  Not like they are put together in a NASCAR shop.  I always wondered how long one of those engines would last under normal driving conditions.

My 2002 Silverado 5.3 has been on a diet of 0w-20 and now 5w-20 to see how it would effect the UOA's.  It basically hasn't really changed and it is spec'ed for 5w-30.  My oil consumption this last run is half a qt in 8k miles.  That is pulling a 4klbs trailer up and down the I-40 in 3rd gear with the tac at 3k for a solid hour and getting 8mpg. Plus it has 194k miles on it.

Just throwing out some of my thoughts not saying anything is correct. :)

No engine should be consuming engine oil, I’ve never had any of my vehicles consume engine oil and if it did, I guess I wouldn’t have known about it cause I used to do OCI’s every 2500-3000 as well as change them out like underwear lol. I strongly believe that if your engine is burning oil, have it fixed immediately or get rid of it!

It’s the oil bud, it’s the oil.

1 quart of oil every 2000 miles is pretty minor for an engine running 0w20. You'll lose up to 10% of oil volume simply due to viscosity modifier cooking off of the oil. In fact, if you aren't losing a small amount of oil between oil changes, it means you have an even bigger problem, as unburned fuel is diluting your engine oil, replacing vaporized oil that left through the PCV system with gasoline.

It's a fairly common occurrence these days. Toyota, Honda, and Subaru have all gone on record saying that it's normal for their engines to burn up to 1 quart every 1,200 miles. BMW too. Ford is currently drastically changing their stance on oil consumption. Their Mustang GT350's 5.2L V8 is supposed to burn up to 1 quart of 5W50 every 500 miles. It's right in the owner's manual.

Welcome to the lovely world of low tension piston rings and synthetic engine oils with viscosity modifiers and 10-13% NOACK.

The SAE standard NOACK ceiling for SN-PLUS is 15% (Dexos1Gen2 is 13%) and before SM it was considerably higher when motors used LESS OIL. This is not limited to 0W20 oils and in point of fact most oils today are over 10%. I'm saying it is better today that when SM and SL specs were in play.

I've written this before but I'll write it again. The first number in the oil is the base oil. That means the a 0W20 and 0W40 are made from the same base viscosity. One that conforms to the standards of a SAE 0W. VI improvers of various molecular weights prevent thinning to below the SAE standards at higher temperatures. The VOLUME of this VI improver is the same regardless. 10% of the bottle. Ultra low NOACK oils do so by limiting the volume of short chain hydrocarbons in the base oil. In the case of Group IV and V...literally none.

They are not changing their 'stance' based on changes in oil chemistry. Those have improved. Build quality has not.

Low tension rings. Well they are not new to the world nor to OEM's and have been employed for decades in hundreds of millions of motors that don't use silly amounts of oil.

And what do you say to the UAO that shows under 1% fuel dilution and still no oil used over the OCI?

2% fuel dilution is an 8 quart system as make up would be 5.12 ounces or a hair over a cup.

16% of a quart or a hair below the full mark.

I'd stay away from that car. :) At a quart in 500 you couldn't keep plugs in it. :wtf: You couldn't keep CAT's/O2's in service.

Owners manuals are books that introduce you to an unfamiliar vehicle. They are also great places to indoctrinate the next generation of guppies to a 'new truth'. (Truth is we care less and are becoming ever more greedy) They are a marketing tool just like a TV commercial. Every really good lie is mostly true if it is to be believed.

Yea, I'm not buying that swill.

My truck uses 1 quart of oil every 2000 miles.   Gm has a service bulletin saying that ms acceptable.   Makes no sense to me got a new truck and got add oil twice in between oil changes...   has anyone else had this problem and what can I do about it?

I have a 2020 silverado 2500hd and at 6000 miles had first oil change then another 2800 miles the oil was down 2 1/2 quarts and then another 1500 miles down 1 1/2 quarts, dealer is now doing a oil consumption check, always chevy since 1982

Sorry to bump an old thread but hoping to find somebody that has solved the issue.

'21 Silverado 1500 6.2L.

Bought new in March '21

Don't tow anything and country driving to/from work (60-65mph).  I turn off the auto start/Stop every time I get in the truck.

Had first "low oil level" at 4,000 miles.  Added 2 quarts of oil then.  Dealership said, "just keep an eye on it and we'll check it when we change the oil."  Got oil changed at 6,000 miles and when I asked if it had used any oil, I got the, we dropped the oil before we checked.  It continued/s to use oil.  Started the "oil consumption test" and it's using about 1/4 every 1,000 miles.

Dealership changed the pcv system at about 20,000 miles on odometer and said bring it back in 1,000 miles.  Did so, and it did not use any oil.  I went on my merry way.  Next oil change I went to a quick lube place and they checked oil level when I got there, and "no oil on dipstick".  Fk

Took it back to dealership and told them about it.  Was told, "if it's not more than a quart every 1,000 miles Chevy won't do anything about it."  But, we started the "oil consumption test" again.

It also has a cold start ping.

I've owned a '96 (new), '99 (used), '02 (used), '08 (new), and a '15 (new) all with the 5.7 or 5.3 and never had anything use any oil.  Have also owned a '17 Yukon Denali with the 6.2L that never burned oil either.  I'm about ready to trade this POS in.

Edit - live in Central Cali.  Hot summers and mild winters.
