2019 Lifter Failure

I think no matter if the oil is changed every 1k miles using the best oil on the market its going to guarantee the lifters will not fail. A certain percentage will fail regardless. Some will get away with doing the bare minimum maintenance and nothing will happen. Others will do the extreme opposite and will have failures. It is what it is. Do the maintenance you can afford and feel comfortable with it. I have chosen 3k mile OCI with Mobil1, Rotella Gas Truck, Pennzoil, Costco, etc. which ever I get for a good price through rebates and sales.

My question was whether OP bought the truck used or not, buying a used truck or anything used puts faith into believing it was well maintained with quality products and not by someone buying the lowest minimum required at the cheapest they can find.

Used vehicles are a crap shoot!

is the failure mode at high RPM?

I agree buying used is a crap shoot.

I have bought used all my life until our recent purchase of our first new car.

Buying used with lower or average miles has worked for me.

Removing the oil fill cap and looking into the engine with a flashlight to check for sludge is standard for me.

I also insert my finger and rub the under side of the valve cover to check for sludge.

Just saying.

There have been a lot of first time posters recently, since everyone has been staying at home.

Lots of complaints, and just vague questions without a lot of details, and when you do reply, most don't respond back.

Makes me wonder about this one, thinking that you have had a loan with a bank for months, not the dealership, you can just dump it off in their parking lot and they will cash you out.

He has a big surprise coming is that is his plan.

Just how old are these used vehicles you’re purchasing requiring you to get that personal with them? Lol

I’ve got a neighbor that used to buy “preowned” until one purchase made him stop. He bought a used truck for his country house in order to run errands and it stayed in the shop for over a month, seems original owner either didn’t use the correct viscosity oil or just really cheap oil cause it required lots of engine work. He left it at the dealership he purchased it from and bought new and said he’ll never buy used again, just lost his trust in believing people care about their expensive trucks, not!Crazy to think years ago spending $50K on a vehicle you’d baby it, not today, most people shouldn’t even own anything other than a Bicycle cause all they do is run the cheapest oil they can find in order to keep it running and later blaming their mechanical issues on the manufacturer.

I keep full records on my vehicles, 4-5K mile oci’s and with the best 20k miles protection oil and filter packages I can buy, never worry about anything except for the transmission which I’ve had serviced twice already. Quite honestly, all new vehicles need more TLC when compared to older models as these motors are prone to issues due to their much tighter tolerances hence the 0W20 thinner oils getting into tighter areas. I’m no expert but 35k miles on my truck, zero idling issues.

True story, the last time it was in the dealership the mechanic asked me what oil I was using, I said Amsoil Signature Series and his response was “oh, that’s why!” so I had to ask why he wanted to know and he said “you’ve got no fouling and engine is running smooth.”

Apparently, fouling up is much more common on these trucks which is something I knew buying my third of this model. Know what you’re buying, be prepared to spend money into anything you buy these days, ALL Manufacturers have their issues, let’s not speed them along, rather prolong them.

Okidoki, I’m outta here! Buy what you can afford and Good luck to OP and everyone else during and throughout these next few weeks.

It doesn't matter if he bought it used.  The truck only has 4k miles on it.  It is a mechanical issue, not a lubrication issue.  As many of these trucks that are on the road and the average consumer follows the OLM  for the most part, which means the oil wouldn't get changed for the first time until around 7,500 miles for most owners.  Those of us on this forum are the exception.

No, you said it’s a 19 and that you’ve got 4K miles on it. Is it a demo or you bought it with less than 50 miles on it. Reason I’m asking is that some years back I bought a brand new “demo” f150 king ranch, had engine problems, later found out that it had visited the mechanics bay often and was run hard by the GM’s son at the dealership, meaning ragged on and most likely didn’t have proper break in. I’ve never heard of anything breaking that soon and with that little mileage unless it was ragged on.

I hope you get it worked out but you know what they say about buying the first year of the new model and redesigned motors and transmission. Good luck and hopefully you get it fixed sooner rather than later but you should just relax and stay safe anyway due to this Covid19

It’s a 19 with only 4K miles, either it was one of the few left or it was a DEMO. Anyway, moving along......

Could easily be a '19 with 4K miles. I just bought a '19 1500LD with a build date of December 2019. Dealer said my 2019 that looks like a 2018 was actually newer than many of the 2020s he had on the lot. I installed a RANGE AFM delete at 25 miles because of horror stories I had heard about engine failures and oil consumption with AFM. Mine is 5.3 with 3.42 gears and 6 speed trans. Hope I didn't make a mistake.

Your 6 speed has been a rock solid transmission, the 8 speeds, different story.
