Dealer Frustrating

Looking to trade a 17 for a 20. Midwest dealer gave me a low ball trade offer which was laughable. BB trade value over 32k and was given a # 28k. I only have 27k miles on SLT Premium Plus with Sunroof. They say value for low miles is too high. Then I tell salesman they have same truck and year just has standard bed with just under 20k miles more and they are selling it for 32990. This dealer is well know on this site. The truck I am looking at no dealers around have the color or features I have been looking to buy. What should I do?

I think the problem is the unknown used market right now.  New trucks may have great deals but dealers are not sure how easily they will be able to move used cars without auctions and the manufactures support such as rebates and zero percent financing. They always start low however, so might be worth it to wait them out? Seems like 30-31 trade with 13k ish (with rebates) off or 6k off with 0 for 84 would be a pretty solid goal on the new one. They can show you 32 for your trade and move the 13k  off to 11 to make you feel better though so watch out for that.

Also, if they are at 32900 on the other one your comparing it to, they are in it around 30. The goal is 2500 based off of the deal they made for it and it allows for negotiation. With that being the case, you may need to be willing give (take 30ish) a little on yours. Best of luck!

Yep. Trade offers are way down right now with the uncertain future.

Little confused (how I spend most of my days), if no one has a truck that you like, what are you going to trade your current truck in for?

There are several sites out there that offer estimates (KBB, NADA, Black Book etc).  All values differ, so which one is right?  Firstly, these sites likely haven't been adjusted to take into account the state of the country due to COVID.  Also, dealerships need to take into account their competition- what they are offering these preowned vehicles for, and what they are selling for throughout their market.

You may ask why they are selling a preowned truck for near what trade in value is?  Because thats what the market depicts it to be sold at. And please keep in mind, they likely won't get their asking price of $32990 - as everyone wants to negotiate.

They have one finally that I am interested in. Also price on new one is a 5.3 and end of 19 I could get the 6.2 for $47754 but wasn’t the color I wanted to buy. Probably should have pulled the trigger then. They want just over 48k for new one.

You know the dealer has to make money on your trade right? This isn't new. They buy at wholesale, sell at retail. He's not screwing you - its a business. He has employees to pay, utilities to pay, rent on the space to pay. Heck he even has to give a commission to the guy that resells your truck. If he makes 3 grand on it - he really breaks even. So he has to make more than that on it.

If its such a laughable offer you should have no problem selling it for higher yourself right?

My dealer offered me 11K for my trade in. So I went and sold it privately for 13,500. Don't take it personal.

I have found 3 comparable trucks for sale from 3 different dealers within 100 miles priced more than 3k than what I feel is fair trade value. All have more miles than mine also.

Are you seriously thinking you should get the same price for yours that they are selling them for? What "overhead" do you have compared to them? You think grocery stores sell food for the same price they buy it at?

I am not asking for what they are selling them for. I am asking for 3k less than what they are selling them for. I shouldn’t have to explain myself.

And if they make 3 K on your truck- they LOSE money. Commission, salary, advertising, rent, space etc. Its a BUSINESS. Ever buy jewelry? Now THAT is a mark up.
