2020 6.2 Max Tow Initial Impressions

Impressed with my 6.2 max tow today.  Usually get 8mpg towing my 7k lb RV.  Today towed with a slight crosswind from houston to lake travis on the other side of austin.  Made it on one tank!  I couldnt beleive it.  Averaged just under 10mp for the trip and until I turned off into the hills in was doing 11.5 on my 50mile rolling average.

I did just have some recall updates installed so I'm not sure if that changed anything.  Maybe shes just finally starting to break in.  I can live with 10 mpg but 8 is just crap

Seeing this just makes me uncertain about what to get,  diesel vs gas. I’ve only had diesel trucks (all tuned and deleted), but I dont tow anything that heavy anymore. With a tuned diesel I can get about 25 mpg highway if not a little more but damn they’re expensive. For the money I’m saving on NOT getting a diesel, I could get a supercharger on the 6.2 and be pretty damn fast. I just wish someone would make a larger aftermarket tank

Well, nobody gonna delete & tune the 3.0 any time soon, so I think you answered your own question. Probably for the best anyway. I wouldn’t go roaching the warranty of a brand new design diesel engine. The thing might be as durable as the 6.4 Powerstroke for all anyone knows.

Oh yea I’m not touching the 3.0 lol. If I’m going diesel I’m going 6.6, but m stuck between 6.6 and the 6.2 gasser

The 6.6 10 speed HD truck is a nice setup, and actually pretty damn quick right out of the box for what it is...not that it’s designed to be.

I just can’t see buying one if I didn’t need to tow or haul. Too damn big, expensive and clunky. If you want a nice sporty sleeper, the 6.2 max tow is awesome. I love mine even without a blower.

I’ve built a 6.2 GMC AT4 Smokey quartz, max tow, upgraded brakes and a standard bed that I think looks awesome. Add a 3-4 inch lift and a little bit bigger tires and that would be badass

I debated heavily between the 6.6 and the 6.2 and im really happy with my 6.2.  Its really fast and not as big for parking and getting it in my garage.  Yes the gas mileage sucks pulling a 7-8k travel trailer but tows nicely.  Just avg 8.9 on a trip to Mt Rushmore and back to KC running 70-75.  It can pass anything but a gas station.  Its thirsty.  But plenty of power and im sure the 6.6 wont give you that much better mileage towing.  Im hoping its still going to improve once its broke in.  Just had my first oil change yesterday.

Are they allowing Max Tow on AT4 now? Usually NHT would require SLT.

I too am VERY happy with my truck.  I especially like the GM Performance intake and exhaust.

However, if you do a lot of towing the 6.6 DMax is the way to go.  I haven't kept up in a while but while I was, DMax owners would report 10-12 mpg towing 10 - 12,000 lbs.  For towing 7 - 8,000 lbs, a DMax ought to get 12-14 mpg when towing at same speeds on flat ground.  Here in the mountainous PNW mpg is lower as is the need for a bigger truck.

Can't get NHT max trailer with AT4.
