I bought a Base 2015 GMC 2500HD Sierra /8’ bed 4x4 as a replacement for my truck that was totaled in a rear end collision.  
 

This used truck I bought has 154,000 miles on it and the car fax report just listed oil changes and inspections, some maintenance things, but no mention of tire rotations.  The PO put on LT285/70R17 Nitto A/T Terra Grappler G2 on black aluminum rims and tires have a mold code indicating 2018 manufacturing date.

 

My question is since I don’t have any history, should I rotate them now because there is no history.  The front brakes were resurfaced, oil/filter and air filter were changed.

 

At least this way I can start a record.

 

What are your thoughts?

I would get something to measure them and go from there. Always have the thicker ones in the back, Especially for a truck, but if you have left bigger than right move them around in a cross pattern so you have them the right way

For sure [emoji106] also, the Toyota tech in me ([emoji849] I know lol) recommends tires at 5/32nds, but the poor man in me says if they hold air and its not winter your good to go haha

Hahaha!  Thanks, I will check the depths - definitely not may-pops, they look like they have some good tread ?.  
 

I’m a recent GM convert - had a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT Quad Cab 8’ bed until the powers to be decided I needed a much newer truck by way of 40+ mph rear end collision.  Life changes when you’re at a complete stop waiting to make a left turn, peaceful and quiet broken by screeching tires and sudden impact.

 

Thing that gets me is that I was less than a minute to my front door... ?‍♂️

Maybe have an alignment done when you rotate the tires, that way you will know if there is anything worn out on the front end, or getting a little long in the tooth.

You know that’s a great idea since the truck has over a 154,000 miles on it and I’m planning a long trip towards late summer/fall.  I hadn’t thought about that, what looks good by eye might well be out of spec.

You are very welcome.

 

Plus the alignment will get you more miles out of the existing tires, along with proper air pressure.

Its funny you say that cause I hear the salesmen at the dealership say it so often its white noise is never thought to bring that up

Yea, just a suggestion, I watch my tire pressure, alignments not as much as I used too, just because of not having the higher miles on the trucks.

Usually get it done with new tires now, unless it is showing signs of needing it.

 

A fresh alignment and new tires are like new shoes for a kid, truck is faster and handles better?️

Do mine every 5K and have since new. Balance every 10K. Absolute freak about tire pressures and alignment. Great shocks help. Currently at 118,000 miles on the these Bridgestone Dueler 684 II and at 5/32. The UTQG on this tire is 360BB. 10/32 is the new tread depth and I have 2/32 left to go to the bars. I'm convinced about proper tire care and  rotation is a huge part of that. Doubled the life of this tire. 360BB? I didn't expect that from this UTQG. Smooth. Quite. Dead even wear. 

 

Nokian recommends 3K-5K on rotations. These guys have been around awhile.

Yes sir, part of the OCI includes a tire rotation on both of our trucks (5000 miles), Chevy trucks like to eat the outside edge of the front tires if they are not in specs.

X3 for the 5k mile rotation. I rotate, change all fluids/filters, and do an ignition tuneup on every thing I buy in order to set the baseline.

In the past on my truck I have rotated every 10k. Since I am not driving it nearly as often as I used to I guess I could step up my game and do it every 5k. I am a stickler for 5k oil changes however, no matter what the oil life says. Probably would not hurt to get a look at the transmission fluid.

    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?   
    • Do you think this width might affect the chalk test with a higher pressure closer to 65psi? I think lowering the pressure makes sense to get the tread to lay flatter
