513Brewer Posted September 29, 2020 Posted September 29, 2020 (edited) I have a new 2020 2500 HD I just picked up last week. and I have had the key not turn completely to the off position where I could remove the key several times now. It will turn off and not go all the way to the off position so I can get the key out. I have to keep playing with it or restart the truck and shift back to drive and back to park and shut off several times to get the key out. Anyone else having this problem? Dealer says they cannot find anything wrong and cannot duplicate. I have video of it happening. Edited September 29, 2020 by 513Brewer Quote
Thankful Posted September 29, 2020 Posted September 29, 2020 My 2020 2500 HD doesn't have a key. Just a key fob and a push button. Quote
newdude Posted September 29, 2020 Posted September 29, 2020 (edited) You have to push in and then turn it back. Read here: https://gm-techlink.com/?p=9921 Quote The new keyed ignition system is designed to make the key cylinder more robust to unintended rotation while the vehicle is on. The cylinder and housing look the same as previous model years with the same four traditional cylinder positions (Lock/Off, Accessory, On/Run, Start), but it requires the driver to push in the key in order to turn the cylinder counter-clockwise to turn off the vehicle. (Fig. 21) If the key is not pushed inward, the key will not turn. There are no changes to starting the vehicle. Edited September 29, 2020 by newdude Quote
513Brewer Posted September 29, 2020 Author Posted September 29, 2020 Ya that's not it. I know you have to push it in. Quote
newdude Posted September 29, 2020 Posted September 29, 2020 I would be suspect of the shift interlock then. The truck isn't seeing the park position, hence why it won't let you get the key back all the way. Have you seen a shift to park message come up on the dash at all? There is a bulletin for being stuck in park. Quote 20-NA-019: Shifter Stuck In Park - (Mar 17, 2020) Some customers may comment that the shifter will not come out of park. This condition may be caused by a failed internal component of the shifter lock. If this condition has been validated, replace the transmission control assembly. The other possibility is this that is for 2019 1500 (same body style as your HD) and their being an issue with the shift lever and the column. Quote PIT5657C: Loose Shifter Lever / Poor Shift Actuation from Shift Lever / Shift to Park Message / Dead Battery - (Mar 11, 2020) Some customers may comment of a loose shifter lever, poor shift actuation from the shift handle, and/or unable to shift to park. If the shifter will not go into park, the ignition will not turn off completely, which could cause a dead battery. Also, a "Shift to Park" message will be displayed on the DIC. This concern could be caused by the shift cable bracket attaching bolts being loose, see picture below. Note: Do NOT tighten these bolts, they are not serviceable. Inspect the shift cable bracket attaching bolts for being loose. If the bolts are found to be loose, replace the steering column assembly. Do NOT tighten or replace these bolts, they are not serviceable. If the bolts/bracket are not found to be loose, refer to High Shift Effort in SI to continue diagnosing root cause Quote

Will keep you posted I have the same issue with my 2020 1500 Custom Trailboss. It only seems to happens when it is cold out, below freezing. I have to eaither restart the truck and shut it off immediately or rock the steering wheel back and forth. What was Chevys repair, cost and did it fix the problem? TIA. Quote
mepops Posted November 20, 2023 Posted November 20, 2023 I have a 2022 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD doing the same key thing. I found that if I sit there after parking for 3 minutes, not two steering wheels straight at 9 and 3. Don't know if that helps but after 3 minutes it'll turn out first try..... Quote

I don't know what the fix was but what I've done over the years is spray some food grade silicone on my key. Works like magic!! For me food grade silicone is like Franks red hot sauce. I use that Sh#t on everything.....LOL!!! Edited November 20, 2023 by Jettech1 Quote

Gotta sit inside the truck for at least 3-5 minutes for the ignition to allow me to get my key out. Quote
amyamymd Posted June 9, 2024 Posted June 9, 2024 I have a 2021 Chevy 1500 doing the same thing. Dealership couldn't find anything. It's very frustrating having to mess with it for awhile before it realizes it's in park. Quote

key gets stuck in ignition Posted June 11, 2024 Posted June 11, 2024 I’m having a issue with my key not coming out of the ignition. I have read everything and it is not anything anyone has said. it’s in park i know you have to push it in. After 5-10 minutes of sitting it will release the key, but sometimes I go in my house and forget and it leaves the running lights on and then it will kill the battery. I have not done that yet, but I work really early, and the Florida sun drains me. I’ve almost fell asleep, and forgot to get my keys out in the truck still it’s really annoying. I have changed the cylinder thinking the pins that were sticking bc I do work outside and my keys get sandy. They came out a little quicker for 3 days but now it’s back to at least a five minute wait before it releases the key. I have spoken with a locksmith and he said that it might be the selinoide for the ignition. im going to probably go and order the whole harness for the cylinder. I don’t know if the harness has the selinoide in it or not. Or am i going to have to replace my whole ignition system. This is a pretty new truck being a 22 I should not be having a problem like this yet. This is my 3rd Silverado my 19 i put 150k miles on never had a problem but it was the 8 cylinder not the 4 cylinder with the turbo and my 2011 had 250k miles and never had any problems only a few sensors and regular maintenance that needed to be done. I really am getting annoyed leaving my truck with the keys in it at every single stop I make thankfully I have really dark tint and nobody can see the keys in my ignition. I run a business and I use my truck for my work and everyday I have to leave my keys in it at least a dozen times. That leaves my truck open to be stolen I still lock it with the clicker fob thing but break a window and the truck is gone not to mention the insurance company won’t cover it because I have to leave the key in it. Can anyone help at least with a blue print of the parts for the ignition so I can replace them im not sure what else I can do. Quote
Josh D Posted September 4, 2024 Posted September 4, 2024 I have 2021 Chevy TrailBoss recently bought and we are having problems getting the key out of the ignition after shutting it down-We typically have to wait 30 secs to a minute and longer to get the key to release-Sometimes it works correctly as soon as we shut truck down -Took it to dealer ship they could not get it to recreate problem-Also notice you have to drive it down the road for it to recreate problem -very frustrating and first Chevy truck I’ve ever owned-Love the truck Quote
