2003 Silverado extended cab 4.8.  Engine cranks when Inserting the starter relay,if the key is on it will start but the starter continues to engage until I pull the relay out, engine then continues to run fine

So, just to clarify: Does the starter always crank if the relay is in or is it only when the key is in run/start?

My guess is a bad starter solenoid. Have you ruled that out?

Did I forget to mention that it won't start with the key at all?? The problem started with what seemed to be the starter relay being bad, it would refuse to start via the key then I would take the relay out and reinsert it and it would start with the key in a normal manner, then it stopped doing that and I had to run a hot wire to the 87 leg on the relay... then is started doing this ...I installed a new ignition switch but nothing changed

Sounds like relay center has corrosion, how does the relay receptacle look? remove your wire and check for power at 30 on relay, and go to search,2003 Silverado No pcm ground to starter relay,in"ask the technician"forum

I assume this is the thread you were trying to post.

Yes, corrosion or short. You'll net a meter to back trace to see where the relay signal wire is getting it's 12v from and to check the relay main legs to see if it shorted close.

Try shaking the harness under the relay/fuse box to see if that changes behavior. Then do the same with harness up to the steering column.
