I used my 2020 Silverado Trail Boss 5.3 with the 6 speed transmission to tow my travel trailer. The transmission temperature was usually under 200 degrees even when going up an incline. The temperature got up to 239 degrees when backing up the trailer (we had a small corner spot and it took us 15 minutes to get it situated). I noticed that the transmission temperature gets around 210-215 degrees when driving in stop and go traffic. Is hitting 215-230 degrees too high when towing? Has anyone added an external transmission cooler? Would changing out the transmission fluid to something better help with keeping the temperature low?

Does your truck have an external cooler? Back when I had my 2013 Denali, that also had the 6-speed, I put a TRU-Cool 40k cooler in place of the stock external cooler and my trans temps were usually in the 150-160 range during south Texas summer heat. Would go up to 180s when I was laying into it. The stock cooler was normally 180s with easy driving. Did the same mod to my 2008 Sierra that had 4l60/2800 stall and saw similar results. Both trucks had power adders too.

I don't think you have anything to worry about.

 

The transmission oil was warmer when parking because the torque converter would have been slipping making more heat that it does when at steady speed on highway,  but there would have little or airflow thru the oil cooler. 

 

The computer is monitoring all the sensors that are installed.

It WILL give a warning if/when it thinks the temperature is to high, and may even go to reduced power until it cools some  - because it wants to 'self-protect'.

I not 100% sure but i though all 2020 trail bosses came with 5.3L 10 speeds not 6 speeds the WT truck was the only truck with the 6speed?

 

This does not answer your question, from what i heard from multiple videos from transmission shops and online writeups, if you keep it under 230F you are fine, above that you might want to do a pan drop to "refresh" the fluid that might of burnt up. If you start running 215-230 for towing a "light" trailer, you should add a trans cooler.

He has a custom TB.  The 5.3 in that trim gets a 6 speed.

Going in reverse with a trailer is just asking for transmission temps to sky rocket. Especially if you are trying to back up a small incline or hill, all it's doing is slipping the converter and that heat is being put directly into the fluid.

Transmission thermostat delete before doing a cooler or you will be in the same place you are now. That alone will drop temps 40 to 50 degrees. After the delete mine runs 160 F on a 100 F day. But even that won't help when road speed is near zero and you are working the converter that hard. In that case I'd look into a secondary cooler with a temperature controlled fan.

Snoop around on this site. 

 

Factory fill fluid is a Group III synthetic. Varnish will start to form around 220-225 F and no matter what fluid you have in it the seals start to harden at 240 F. Give them long enough at that temperature and they will slowly turn to cement. 

 

Red Line D6 or AMSOIL ATF is a PAO/POE blend that will take the fluid limit to 275 F or so. Well past the damage point. 

 

When you're running down the road with the converter locked up the converter and pan temps (DIC) are near identical. Under load, like backing up, at a walking speed they converter fluid temperature can be 100 F higher than the DIC display. 

 

Yea, yea, the warning light doesn't come on till about 260 and the limp mode a bit higher. That doesn't mean it's okay to let it rip there. Means you're in trouble and get your foot out of it and find out what's what. It's also the pan temp not the converter fluid temp.

Big difference between running all day every day at 240 and touching 240 on rare occasion.

Absolutely true and why I wrote the below quote to make that exact distinction:

I can only dumb it down so far. 

 

That said I've never heard ANY trans shop outside GM think running bulk temperatures over 180 F was a good thing.

Most of the damage done by heat happens to parts not the fluids.

Seals, clutch material, clutch bonding, steel plate warp.

Before I did the delete on my 6L80E the fluid temperature on a summer day ran 210-230 F all day, every day. 

And I wasn't towing anything nor do I live in the desert.

Yes I installed a new thermostat BEFORE deleting it.

 

If your already at 210-230 F and loading up the converter that fluid in the converter can be over 300 F.

I have the same problem i have 21 single cab Silverado custom my trans temp usually hang in 186 to197   maximum in Middle East weather 

sometimes the temp goes to 221

the question is do i need to install a trans cooler ?

A trans cooler will help. 

I preach this continually, changing fluids of all types has served me well. Changing your trans fluid regularly would be beneficial.

    • I have a `25, 1500 that auto sets on incline. Never knew that at first. I have the electronic shifter. Just think if it didn`t do that? Unlike a mechanical shift that you can muscle out of park, how would you get this thing out? That would be a problem.   What I found out later is, I don`t have to push the button to release. Just put it in gear.   Setting parameters? Don`t know if it`s possible.

I usually set the parking brake (habit) when on flat ground for typical driving.    When backed down on the launch ramp to launch the boat and I place gear selector into Park, the parking brake activates automatically. My second nature is to set parking brake manually and noticed I was turing the parking brake off.  The parking brake appears to be setting itself automatically.   I looked all over my owner's manual and only found references to being on an incline and manually setting parking brake, or at times parking brake will be auto engaged, but nothing specific to my situation.    When is the parking brake automatically engaged?  Under what specific circumstances?  Can the auto set parameters be changed?     I like the auto set feature.  It would be nice if always engaged when shifted into Park and released when shifted out of Park (like my wifes 2025 RAV4).   Thanks!

Based on the 2000 samples in the SPEEDiagnostix database, increasing the oil viscosity in these engines, even those run on the track, showed no significant difference in results.   The smoking gun was in the oil chemistry. That is where the data shows higher instances of more wear. Molybdenum was the key; the higher the amount, the less the wear. Speed postulates that higher viscosity oils have more thickeners to artificially inflate their viscosity numbers. These thickeners lose viscosity under shear, and the result is that not all oils of the same viscosity have the same shear stability.   Having enough viscosity is the most important characteristic, but according to Speed, once that required viscosity level is reached, additive chemistry matters more than additional viscosity. Speed also states, oil pressure problems on the racetrack aren’t a viscosity problem; it’s an oiling system problem. Running a thicker oil is just a band-aid for an underlying oiling system problem.
    • Can it still be Assembled II?   Viscosity on the decline by various means. Heat on the rise making that worse. Engine RPM in the tank. Smaller motors with more boost trying to emulate an electric motor. Full torque, zero rpm. Then we will triple the OCI. Argh.    But wait....there is more. LSPI has pushed a shift from Ca to Mg and as that cost more PLUS the run to lower sulfur compounds the TBN is moving in the wrong direction for the increased OCI's demanded.    That not being enough to placate a demand for a parameter they can't measure the other sulfur bearing compounds are also under attack. That would be zinc and phosphorus sulfonate compounds. To some degree those are being replaced with boron esters and others, i.e. titanium ect. All of which have shorter service lives. And there there is the "Secrete Sauce" marketing for AW adds that 'Can't be detected by UOA's" but trust me because I (the blenders) never ever lie.    Spoiler alert; ALL additives are sacrificial! Smaller amounts of the old blended with less robust versions of the new do not equal longer service lives. So what are the blenders recommending? Wait for it.......   MOVING THE GOAL POSTS! OMG      Let's declare the long standing TAN/TBN crossover irrelevant and tell people that soot is a great 'graphite' based lubricant which can aid tribo films. Wait, what? Let's declare that the standards used for oxidation and nitration were to conservative and can be expanded. Let's tell them that because GDI fuel dilution, although being a VISCOSITY KILLER and an acid generator is actually okay because we have better base oils that limit viscosity failure limits. (Said knowing this is measured in fractions of a centipoise and in bases not commonly used in shelf oils)   Lying from the heart is not just the new normal but we have a public, a very young public, that is so ignorant of the facts and so sure of their "RESEARCH" into AI driven models base in regurgitated  instead of scientific research based unvarnished, peer reviewed FACTS that the incoming guard is loosing their grip on reality and the OEM's are tickled pink while the blends bend the knee.    You have an ever limited set of tools to work with. And sooner or later those will be taken from you as the API and the EPA strangle the last remaining fluids from the system. What you have left is your wits. If you care to use them.    At some point in the very near future it will not longer be possible to do "What is best for the machine", and be replaced with "The best you have access too". You WILL be rewarded with half the life and twice the cost. That isn't that hard to predict.         
    • I trust you saw the other comment where he knew what he was talking about !. Yes, these darned newer vehicles with all their so smart they are stupid technology, goes and drains the battery down. As you might see my other comment, I installed a Noco 5 battery tender under the hood and at this point still have the cord routed so I have to lift the hood and then plug it in but am typically parked in a garage or a shed so its not risking the engine hood in the wind. That way I am assured or hopefully so of not finding I have a battery drawn down and can't even start the truck and that also damages the battery to draw it down too far.
