6.2 Engine whine?

My 20 Sierra 6.2 has developed an engine whine, if anyone is familiar with "alternator whine" in the car audio world it pretty much sounds like that only outside in the engine bay, I could also describe it as the noise from an electric RC toy car (high pitch squeal) it is RPM dependent once warmed up and at idle it quiets down and is mildly audible but picks up quickly with the RPM's. any ideas what this could be?

My 2021 6.2 Trail Boss always had a tick noise. I never had an check engine light come on and it always ran flawlessly.  My 2022 ZR2 also has the 6.2 and for some reason it us much quieter. No ticking noise at all. They both have DFM active. Who knows.

It is the oil pump imo, i have complained about mine for 7 years now, dealer would never lift a finger since it all still works. Knock on wood it is still running ok but as loud and annoying as ever.

 

Sounds a lot like a old Ford Tauris power steering pump whine from the 80's! Anyone old enough I'm sure has heard that sound before since all Tauris models had that issue!

A bit of a delay I finally got it up to the dealer to look at they have not 100% diagnosed the issue but are leaning towards either the torque converter or the entire transmission being replaced. on Day 4 now of having no vehicle to drive as the dealer is out of loaner cars....

Well apparently after the dealer having the truck 6 days "finally" dropped the pan on the transmission and told me they found "allot" of metal shavings in the pan so they are replacing the torque converter and pump.....Call me crazy but I was under the impression that when metal shavings were present it was time to rebuild or replace the tranny as all the bearings and seals or any tight fitting parts have been contaminated with "liquid sand paper"

 

oh and....still no loaner/rental car....and my truck is my only vehicle....so why exactly did I buy a new truck that was supposed to be mechanically trouble free for years???

I would not be happy about them not replacing the transmission if they found a lot of metal shavings, especially in an automatic. If they aren't going to replace the transmission then I would ask for some kind of additional time/mileage added to the warranty for transmission issues.

Hi Greyhound... My 2020 Silverado 6.2L trail boss is making this exact whining noise as well. Can you please update me on how this ended up with the dealer / service? I dropped mine off this morning and they didn't even hear it on their own, so I had to go back and show them, then they heard it and said they will put it up on the rack and try to see where it is coming from. I want to get ahead of them coming back and saying something like "its normal" or "no issues".

My 2021 5.3 with 26K miles started this today.  Changes with RPM and sounds exactly as op states.  I'll be dropping it off at the dealer in the next few days.  Wondering how op's issue was resolved as well.

A bit of a long story, they had it in and out of the shop for nearly 2 months shotgunning parts, torque converter, pump, partial rebuild of the "front of the transmission" then replaced transfer case, then replaced the whole transmission, 

 

Essentially there is a problem with the idler gear going bad in the 10 speeds and then it starts digging in to the case and destroying bearings and then the pump spits metal everywhere and bad things happen....    decent explanation linked.  https://www.tiktok.com/@romanobrythonicmindset/video/7208405234958257451

      Did you even read this article?   Even the title of the article says "U.S.-Iran Deal Doesn’t Mean a Swift Return of Oil and Gas Flows"   Remember, crude oil prices are based on FUTURE purchases by the oil companies.  Gas prices are based on FUTURE purchases by the station.  This article stated that many of the oil producing nations have to restart their processes to get the oil produced.  Then the oil has to be shipped to wherever.  And it doesn't get there overnight.  And most of that oil is not coming here. Check out this site:  https://afdc.energy.gov/data/10621   A graph will pop up to show where the US imports their oil from.  Notice that there isn't a lot of import from OPEC and Iraq.  Most of the US import comes from Canada. The US oil produces are selling their oil on the open market, which is why the US fuel costs went up.  So you're correct, the US oil companies are going to slow walk the price downward.

      Stabilitrak conversion to Z71

      I just purchased a 2004 Tahoe with 148,******. I used to have a 2006 Suburban that had the push button Auto 4X, 2Hi, 4Hi and 4Lo. When checking out this truck I noticed it had push button but didn’t focus on it. After the purchase when driving home, this is when I noticed it was different and after a little research found out it has the AWD stabilitrak system. I don’t live in an area that requires AWD. I bought the truck to start a new adventure in life with off roading, now that the kids are all grown up. I purchased the truck knowing it didn’t have the G80 rearend but plan on re-gearing to drive on 33s or 35s and upgrade with a rear locker and still be able to tow when needed. Blah Blah Blah Anyway I know am thinking about converting the stabilitrak  to Z71. I know I will have to replace the transfer case. So now the information gathering stage is happening to see if it is worth it. Is the front AWD stabilitrak differential different when compared to a non-AWD front diff? Will I need a completely different front differential or can it be converted? What else should I be considering? I did see something in a video for GMT900 platform with removing the ABS fuse that disables the stabilitrak and turns the truck into a 2 wheel drive. Would that work in the GMT800 platform?
