I can name several gas and diesel vehicles that got mid and upper 20 miles per gallon from the 80s and 90s. The trick ponies there’re producing today with cylinder deactivation as an example. Aren’t for the end user’s fuel number. Across the board for the manufacturers it trickles up the numbers for them. There’re dilemma is instead of producing naturally high fuel mileage sedans with low profits. Their  aim is to push high profit large trucks and SUVs that are bricks through the air. And somehow in a controlled environment getting decent fuel mileage out of them. The new scam is electric trucks. Another way to meet their over all mileage numbers. That have  little use for the masses. I love trucks. I’m not paying a 20K up charge for a luxury truck. When I can have a high fuel mileage luxery car that hauls as$ and a good used truck for the same money.

Last I looked at how mpg ratings are achieved for manufacturers, not for specific gas burning cars, if it's a hybrid or some other form of alternate fuel, such as ethanol, the manufacturer gets awarded as of the alternate fuel vehicle achieves 50% more mpg than it actually did.

I did trip this summer in my 2020 ram hemi from Detroit to Chicago and I got 24.7 mpg doing 70 mph one way loaded with 4 adults and bad full of language and one way alone  , I thought that was crazy good fuel milage for a full size truck with a v8, I have a video to prove it for non believers .

I drove from San Diego to a small town on the Nevada/Arizona border north of Las Vegas back in December.  Cruise was set at 78mph (8 over the posted limit), and air conditioning was on.  I saw 24.4 mpg on my 2020 Silverado Trail Boss LT with the 6.2 and a few things adding to drag such as tow mirrors and offroad lights.  I have a dash camera setup but didn't save the video because i don't care what the nonbelievers have to say, and the numbers are still showing as best mpg in my screens.  Unlike a trip from Chicago to Detroit, I had mountains to drive over.

Normally Rams are full of bad language when they aren't moving because they're on the side of the road.  Must've been a rough trip if the bad language occurred while still doing 70mph.

Imo, OP's mpg was average

Manufacturer rated MPG are the pits. Where in the real world driving are you driving in a controlled environment to achieve said MPG?? Real driving is stop n go, idling at traffic, stepping on it to pass the jerk that won't move from your blind spot or just simply heavy foot enjoying your ride.

UPDATE to my original post. I just did a major road trip. Total of 3,910 miles and got a total of 19.2 mpg. Mostly interstate miles (3,460). Usually driving 5 - 10 over.  Looking like mileage in the 19s is about what I can expect from my 6.2 ten speed.

You forgot cleaner engine emissions and a revised EPA testing program that makes it more difficult to obtain the inflated numbers your Avalanche was assigned.  Yesterday's cars will not achieve the same results as today's cars under the current testing.

Exactly.

Original vs. the new corrected MPG ratings of a 2002 Avalanche.

And here is compared to a 2022 5.3 2wd and 4wd non Trail Boss.

I have an 02 Avalanche. The only trip I took was taking my brother in law to get his camper. At 72 mph I got 16 mpg. Following him back at 65 mph I got 18 mpg. Every 2000s GM truck I owned got pretty much the same. My 14 GMC usually got around 22. It’s no secret these things are bricks the faster you go the worse mileage you’ll get. Most of my trucks had the middle gearing. I liked crips performance rather than maximum fuel mileage.

I have never bought a vehicle because of the mileage it got, I bought it because I liked it.

I buy the 'deal' first; then the look with heavy consideration is give to operating cost. Most of the time I can have all three. Sometimes the deal is so good it covers the efficiency even if it's not. 😉 $10 K buys allot of fuel.

I liked the vehicle, got the best deal I could.

Trading ever 2-3 years with high mileage I only bought deals for work. Most just happened to be GMC. At least 10K off. Company paid for gas, wasn’t an consideration until I retired.

TOC total operating cost is what a trucking company, road maintainer, fleet looks at and you are spot on Grumpy Bear but wearing shorts like KARNUT can lower fuel usage even in an old tank Avalanche.  LOL

As an aside isn't it odd that the new Silverado has that ugly valance fastback thingie like the Avalanche?  Maybe the body had to be strengthened for all the weight of the batteries below?

I used to proctor FTP and HWY  EPA approved testing but my brain is melting and can't recall enough to add to the conversation.

I remember versions of these but can't remember the actual names of the cycles aside what I posted above.

The Avalanche was very popular. GM quit making them in favor of a four door pickup. I like the Avalanche because it rides better than a pickup being it’s basically a suburban. And I like the way it looks and it’s different.

Most people do it that way. I'm just not 'most people.

I get the best deal to be made not the best deal I can. There is a difference and it isn't one a person can force. It's more like opportunity meeting resources. I can walk out the door with a hundred grand in my pocket and get robbed, but its still maybe the 'best deal I can make (force). My best deals come when I'm not even looking to deal. More often than not, when I don't even have a need.

I've never seen the asset yet that I'd move heaven and earth to acquire. I rarely do "Want". I have, but it's rare and it's rarely a deal. :P

Best deal to be made or best deal I could, same to me. When I bought my 2102 it took over 2 weeks and I walked out twice. I wasn't trying to steal the truck, just a fair price. A fair price is the buyer's decision.

Do what makes you happy.
