Just brought home my 2023 Denali and I already have a tonneau cover on it.  I stopped for fuel in the rain and then drove probably 6+ miles to my destination.  I'm unsure of if somehow I hit the button twice in my pocket or what, but it seems strange to have happened.  When I got to our destination, I went to back into the parking spot and noticed that the camera was looking at the license plate instead of behind me. I'm worried about this becoming a problem because I usually carry my tool bags and such in the bed of the truck and would hate to have the gate open and I would have no idea since I can't see it in the rear view or mirrors.  Anyone know why it would have opened or if GM can notify us on the newer vehicles?  My 19 Silverado would let me know if the tailgate was done with a simple notification that I could dismiss.  This is so far the only true issue with the truck.  I've seen that there have been others with the issue of the multi pro tailgate opening on its own and I do pull at trailer on occasion and if that were to happen it would definitely F up the tailgate.

My 2021 pro tailgate erratically opens and sometimes switch doesnt work when pushed. I've noticed it seems to happen after a rain or washing. The top switch gets wet and shorts out. See Technical Bulletin # 23-NA-112. Needs the switch replaced.

I'm a little confused on 1 point.  How could you not know if the tailgate is closed when looking in the rear view mirror?  Is the "spoiler" looking ridge not visible in the mirror?  I have a 2020 and have had 2 tonneau covers on my truck.  One was the Rough Country trifold.  The one I have now is a Retrax.  With both tonneau covers closed, I was always able to tell if the tailgate was up.  Was there a redesign of the top plastic trim piece I missed?

As for concern about the tailgate dropping while pulling a trailer, have you looked into the GM accessory that should prevent that from happening.  Iirc, it's made by Curt, but don't quote me on that.

My 2021 Silverado started having this tailgate issue over this past weekend.  I have an appointment in 2 weeks, assuming the fix will TSB 23-NA-112.  I'll reply after the issue has been corrected.

Is there any mention of a battery drain on any trucks? I'm having the same issue with my keys as well. Now, there is a parasitic draw that is draining the battery.  I go to pull the fuse for the theft system, there isn't one. It's supposed to be on the driver's side, on the side of the dash.  I have an appointment at our GMC dealer for May 2nd.

Thank you.

My rear view mirror  is a camera and no I can't see it. Hence my issue.

Flip the bottom lever over to regular mirror, then you can see it.

This is certainly not what we like to hear, Pyrojodge.  Please know, customer satisfaction is extremely important to us. Our team would be more than happy to take a closer look into the concerns with your 2023 GMC Sierra Denali's tailgate opening up on its own. To do so, please send an email to [email protected] with ATTN: Pyrojodge/GM Trucks in the subject line.

Please include your contact information, VIN, a brief description of your concern, and the name of your preferred dealership. We look forward to hearing from you. Tailgate issue was fixed yesterday, TSB 23-NA-112 was the fix.

I had the exact same issue.  Decided the first time it "could" have been one of us bumping the switch when we stopped in parking lot, as when we got out it was down. We knew it was up when we left home because I could see out the cameras. The next time this happened, unfortunately, told a different story. We were pulling our camper to an event in September. As I was driving in the area to park the camper, making the last turn of 3 (without stopping), I heard a CRUNCH!!  Yep, it came down on the last turn and hit the jack on camper. Not a pretty site. I have attempted to email & contact GM since it happened. I haven't gotten 1 single response.

Last week I FINALLY found out that the first week in November a bulletin was posted by GM stating an issue with switch that they are replacing. Have one on order at dealer now.  Now I wait as the dealership is going to fight for my damage to be fixed as well. Such a disappointment as I'm on my 3rd new GMC Truck and can't get any sort of a response on this. Customer Service should be a priority, but sure doesn't seem to be with this from all I've read on the same issue.  Hope you got yours fixed!!

Will check out this TSB as I have a 2024 1500 Sierra and have noticed my tailgate being down without using buttons a few times in the last 3 months from delivery. One time was about 20 minutes after washing truck. Thanks for TSB number.

Did you have to prove to dealer to get fixed or will they address simply because you bring it up?

Pretty sure there's a recall now. Call your dealer and they can tell you if your truck is in it.

This has happened to me 3 times.....although like you, the first time I went in to get groceries, and when I can back my tailgate was down......thinking the key fob button was pushed accidentally in my pocket......fortunately nothing was in the back.  Second time, a bit more serious.......I was driving for over 100 miles on my trip, when I came to a near stop in heavy traffic on the expressway.....then when we resumed, another car flagged be down, and sure enough, my tailgate was down......and garbage was spread over the last mile......fortunately nothing of value and did not damage vehicles behind me.   I was not so lucky with my truck......I had ice build up on the bumper, so when it went down, it dented by tailgate which will have to be addressed when the problem is resolved.    Third time, after having it looked at by a local dealer, I left to go home, stopped for gas including 3- 5 gallon cans in the back......went a few miles, having the tailgate open.....and going around a roundabout intersections the 3 full cans of gas were spread out across the road.....fortunately no gas escaped and no one was injured.  A concerned citizen tracked me down, and let me know the situation.  I am so glad it wasn't my hunting rifles scattered down the road, and certainly am glad this hasn't caused any injuries or damage that I know about.

I don't understand why there is not any indication of the gate being closed......green light or red light (the gate is open)on the button....there seems to be a spot for it.  Although there is a known issue, a gate ajar warning of some time is needed, this is a major liability for GM and for the owners of these vehicles.....I own a 2023 Sierra 1500 AT4.

I meant to say the tailgate opened unexpectedly and the gas cans went flying out the back on my way home, just so we are clear.

The other recommendation I would have, is move the button away from the emergency flasher button.......when you are rapidly trying to push this button is a hurry given the situation, it is too easy to hit the tailgate button.

    • I find it amusing the OP doesn’t realize this threads heading includes several engines. He should have posted in the off topic section if he wanted a more narrow focus. I really appreciate and find amusing that he actually pointed out one of my many vehicles. The Odyssey. That happens to use 0-20 oil. I love pushing his buttons.
    • Maybe, but it seems he is the only one that has backed up data to prove what he is stating. I think he is doing this more because he enjoys it and wants to get the information out to us. He's got the knowledge and access to the proper equipment and having the funds doesn't hurt.  I would love to do what he is doing and would do it if and when I hit the Powerball.  I'm not a Tribologist by any means but love to learn what I can.   I would bet there would be doubting people out there if a completely independent lab with high quality work and highly respected in the automotive industry, put out information like this.  The world can't be pleased, one just has to take the information that they are given, do more of their own research to find actual lab data to back up what they are trying to figure/find out.  Most don't bother, they just want to believe what they first see.     I don't have the minimax but my 6.2 in my 2019 Silverado with 64k miles shows excellent UOA results with 0w-20 and for my own purposes 5w-20.  Since not much of a change using 5w. I liked the data sheet information on the SS 5w-20 and figured I would give it a try.  Still the same viscosity at 100℃.   In the end we all just do what makes us happy, life is too short to get upset over trivial social media.   On a side note, I do feel GM has dropped the ball and just cares about the bottom dollar and not quality anymore.  "Like a Rock" has been long gone.  Seems "Built Ford Tough" has as well.
    • Better than stock but that's like putting lipstick on a pig
    • Hello, my 3 month old Sierra Elevation wont recognize a trailer with electric brakes? All the lights work correctly, but no power to the brakes?   This is the factory installed brake controller. If you manually push the knob, the display shows the power % but does not light up like my 2022 silverado.   I have an appointment with the dealer, but was checking to see if anyone else has seen this issue.    Thanks,
    • Been using SS 0w-20 from new, but wanted to change to the 5w-20 because I liked the data on the data sheet, to me it seems like a little better product. But as you can see, not much difference. This is also with running a mix of 10 gallons E85 to a tank topped with 93. It isn't a flex fuel vehicle so any higher I get a CEL for running lean on both banks. Yes my mileage takes a hit. Instead of 20 mpg I normally get on trips I get 17mpg. This is also using EaO17 filter.  What is amazing is I have the AMSOIL cone filter on it since I have the GM Performance intake installed and that air filter has 44k miles on it.  I just take it out and shop vac it off once a year.  I use the upholstery tool on my shop vac.  Works well.
