My pickup throws a P1098 on my 3.0L Duramax which points to the Engine Coolant Control Valve needing replaced. My engine temp will get past 210 for a bit and sometimes it'll turn the cooling fans on high in 40 degree weather. I've been clearing the code and continue to drive it. Of course, it's got 104K miles on it so no warranty coverage.

Wondering if any techs could post the install instructions? Can't find anything on YouTube...

Single Use Fasteners and Components

Removal Procedure

Caution: With wheels of the vehicle facing straight ahead, secure the steering wheel utilizing steering column anti-rotation pin, steering column lock, or a strap to prevent rotation. Locking of the steering column will prevent damage and a possible malfunction of the SIR system. The steering wheel must be secured in position before disconnecting the following components:
  • The steering column
  • The intermediate shaft(s)
  • The steering gear

After disconnecting these components, do not rotate the steering wheel or move the front tires and wheels. Failure to follow this procedure may cause the SIR coil assembly to become un-centered and cause possible damage to the SIR coil. If you think the SIR coil has became un-centered, refer to your specific SIR coil’s centering procedure to re-center SIR Coil.
  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection
  2. Secure the steering wheel so it will not turn when the upper intermediate steering shaft and steering column are disconnected.

Cleaning and Inspection Procedure - Conditional

Note: The following cleaning and inspection and/or overhaul steps are ONLY to be performed as determined necessary based on the condition of the part being removed with the intention of reinstallation. The labor time to perform any of these steps is not included in the base labor time and if required would need to be documented and submitted as Other Labor Hours for warranty claim reimbursement. A description of the repairs performed must be documented in the technician correction comments.
  1. Clean the engine coolant flow control valve (1).

  2. Inspect the engine coolant flow control valve (1).

Thanks for that...doesn't sound too bad if I can track down the part.

Have you asked if they will help you out at 104K.

Sometimes problem items get 'policy' warranty beyond the powertrain one.

There were also a bunch of harness and connector issues -- so it might not be the valev anyway.

The valve design was changed in later years.

I just had this code pop on my truck after an ECM update for an unrelated issue. Picked my truck up from dealer and before I even left the check light  came on…

I also have this issue on my 21 Silverado 3.0 duramax and I can’t seem to drive it anytime without the code being there… dealership wants 3K to fix the coolant control valve… I’ve had the truck a month and the light has been on since week 1… Needless to say I’m pissed and the dealer I bought it from isn’t helping at all… Used vehicle  and out of warranty and it’s my problem now… I’m wondering if anyone has found any honest fixes and will this problem go away if if spend the money … it almost seems like this should be some type of a recall issue since it’s so common with vehicles with lower miles …

Hello Friends,   on Friday I removed, cleaned, lubricated and reinstalled my coolant control valve (24001355) on my 21 Sierra (68k miles=no warranty).  It was a success and I no longer have fans blasting or engine light on.  The issue was was in the gear box to one of the valve motors…it’s the one with the steel clips instead of screws.  It was all gummed up and badly needed cleaning.  I used a white lithium grease to re-lubricate the plastic gearbox.  It is a 7 hour job minimum but I accomplished all in my garage without a lift on just a jack stand. (Lots of car yoga though). Saved about $500 in parts, 5 months of waiting, and whatever the dealership would charge hourly.

How safe is it to drive, mine is under warranty but they have a back order on the part. The fan runs high constantly and will occasionally go into reduced power mode.

Any update on how the trucks have been working after the fix? My 3.0 just had the same issue.. had the truck for 2 hours, check engine light turned on, and now I’m debating on returning the truck or getting it fixed… let me know, thank you!!

I am currently going through the issue with the CCV. Here is my experience although it may differ with other dealerships.

2023 LZO. Check engine light came on June 3, 2025. Drove straight to the dealer and they confirmed it was the CCV. Left the truck with them and they received the part today, June 12th, and will have it ready in the next couple of hours. So, about a 10 day turn around. All covered under warranty. They did offer a rental or loaner during my down time.

I hope this is a sign that the CCV is more readily available now.

I have a 2021 Sierra, 3.0. w/47,195 miles. We were on vacationand and while launching our boat, the engine light came on and the fans started up wide open. I shut it off as soon as possible and let it cool off. I carry a reader with me and got the code P1098. I couldn't do anything about it so I cleared it. At the end of the week I drove it home 3 1/2 hours and no problems. Yesterday I drove it about 8 miles and it came on again. This time it said "Engine Power Reduced" I made an appointment at the dealer today and can't it get in until Friday.

Drop it off and wait for a phone call.

I first picked up my CPO 2022 (refreshed) about a year ago.  Had P1098 pop up once in the fall, cleared it while/after paying close attention to the engine temp (it was fine the whole time).  Moved on with my life.  Happened again early this year, did the same thing.  About 3 weeks ago, it popped, cleared, came up again next start cycle.  Did the song and dance for a few days - it always seemed to pop up after a short "off cycle" - as in, filling up with fuel, stopping to grab a drink, etc.  It also seemed, other than the one time over the winter, to be on very hot days.  All the time, the temp gauge stayed right in the middle where it should be.  Received a "reduced acceleration soon" message and that's when I bit the bullet and took it to the dealer.  Just short of 31k miles.  I was shocked when they said they had the part in stock and would have it done next day.  Gave me a loaner (2024 Chevy Equinox, terrible car).  All under warranty.  I was really impressed they had one in stock as I've seen horror stories of people waiting weeks/months for a replacement.

I've had the truck back for about a week and no issues so far.  Service manager said they've been trying to keep a couple in stock as they've done several replacements.

New part number is 40009179 - I haven't been able to confirm this is an improved design in any way but I'm crossing my fingers.
