Quick update here. GM has agreed to a repurchase or replacement for mine. I received a call from the BBB rep explaining how they calculate the buyback offer which, if true, would be unacceptable for me. I told her

I wanted an actual offer in writing to review so now I'm waiting on that. I'm giving it another week or so before going the lawyer route.

I put new $1800 tires on my truck, a level kit, and tint, and I'm close to months now without it which has been huge pain in the a**.

Another update: We're officially at the 2 month mark. At this point, I'm becoming concerned that the truck sitting in the same spot for this long is going to cause additional damage, so if I do end up rejecting their offer, I'm getting back a truck with significantly more issues than just the valve body. I drive by the dealership everyday on my way home from work, an it hasn't moved in 7 weeks.

Also, GM denied my claim for the aftermarket tires, level kit, bed cover, and tint to be included in their estimate. Still haven't received the final offer.

Potential issues from letting a car sit too long -

  1. Battery Drain: Car batteries can lose their charge over time, especially if the vehicle is not started regularly. A battery may fully discharge in a few weeks to months, depending on the age and condition of the battery.
  2. Tire Issues: Tires can develop flat spots from sitting in one position for too long. This can lead to a rough ride and may require tire replacement. Additionally, tire pressure can drop, leading to under-inflation.
  3. Fluid Deterioration: Engine oil, coolant, and other fluids can deteriorate over time. Oil can become less effective at lubricating the engine, and other fluids may separate or become contaminated.
  4. Rust and Corrosion: If the car is exposed to moisture, rust can develop on the body and undercarriage. Brake components can also corrode, which may affect braking performance.
  5. Pests: Rodents and other pests may take up residence in your vehicle, potentially causing damage to wiring and upholstery.
  6. Fading Paint: Sunlight can lead to paint fading and damage if the vehicle is not covered or parked in a shaded area.
  7. Fuel Degradation: Gasoline can degrade over time, especially if it contains ethanol, which can absorb moisture and lead to phase separation.

While you're not wrong to be concerned, some of these potential issues are way over blown.

1) If the battery drains to the point the truck can't be jump started at the dealer, or fails to hold a charge afterwards, it should be replaced under warranty given the age of your truck.

2) Flat spotting mostly happens when a tire(s) is significantly under inflated. Unless one of yours has a leak it is unlikely they will lose enough air to make permanent flat spotting an issue. I have an old car in my garage that doesn't get driven for months at a time. I can tell the tires feel like they have slight flat spots but a few miles of driving takes care of it.

3) That takes a long time to happen. It's mostly an issue with condensation (moisture) accumulation in the oil and trans fluid from short run cycles where the fluids don't reach operating temp. If it's not being started at the dealer there are no short run cycles. It's possible there was already moisture present when it got dropped at the dealer. The additives just don't degrade much from sitting. Engine coolant won't be affected, nor will brake fluid. The trans fluid will be drained when they do the valve body. If you are concerned about the oil have them change it.

4) No more of an issue than if it is sitting in your driveway or garage. Driving it doesn't counteract the exposure to moisture. The brake rotors might develop a coating of rust which a quick drive will scrub off. Moisture might cause the rear brake (sliding) calipers to hang but unlikely.

5) Not likely an issue while it's sitting in the dealer's lot. Not exactly a wooded area where those kinds of critters live.

6) Sure, but damage due to constant exposure is likely to take years.

7) True, but again it takes quite a bit of time for the fuel to degrade. Again, my old car sits for months at a time with ethanol gas and it never has an issue. My boat would also sit for months at a time, also without issue.

I'd be far more concerned about body damage while it's there.

Wow that's a lot of worrying. Of course they are not going to pay for your aftermarket tires and window tint.

My turn. The tranny went on my 24 back in early November at 17K miles and has been at the dealer since waiting on "back-ordered parts." Still waiting.......  Hope the same thing doesn't happen with the 25 we just bought.

This site has a great explanation of what they think is going on with the GM 10 speed valve body failures.

I couldn’t agree more. GM is just as bad as ford was with the Pinto…knows about the problem, won’t supply a fix and says “it’s cheaper to accept the lawsuits.” I hope the NHTSA bullies them into going with these guys for the fix. GM obviously isn’t going to make it right.

3 Weeks After Valve Body Replacement Update:

Part# was the same as the one they took off.  I confirmed that the part # would switch if GM started using a different supplier. (So the part they put on at less than 35K miles, will be in the back of my mind until I get long past the 70K mark. )

I have noticed the lower gears seem to not be as smooth as it was before. Seems like it revs higher at times before the gear actually switches.   To add some context to that though:

  • I'm generally a pretty easy driver. (I'm one of those that likes seeing 30+mpg if I'm not pulling a trailer.)  But when pulling out on the highway or something, I do give it more throttle to not be a pain in the a**.  When I try to give it that get-on-it, i notice more of the searching.
  • I dont hardly feel or hear a thing when going through the higher gears, but going over hills I kinda feel like it should maybe make the next shift up sometimes and it doesn't do it when it kinda seems to me it should be.
  • It has been super cold here for the past couple of weeks. (single degree temps)
  • There is apparently a "learning time" for the TCM of around 500-1000 miles, where it will learn your driving habits and program accordingly. I am around 250 miles at this point.
  • I did not have the Banks iDash during my first few months with the truck and did not "see" when it was in what gear.  Now I do have that displayed and perhaps I just notice it more because of that? Maybe I didnt notice it doing this during my first few months of owning the truck because I was distracted by the shiny new toy?

I have found this forum very helpful, so thank you to the folks sharing stuff here.  I will try to keep updating periodically.  My busy season for my business will hit in about a month and that is where my true test will begin.  I'll be on the road with a trailer almost daily for about 10 weeks straight.

Add me to the list. Dropped off my 22 sierra yesterday. Was told today it is the valve body and it has been ordered no eta on arrival. Dealer states there are trucks waiting one of which he has had and been waiting for 4 months.

Have a read of my post here on 01/17, page 16 of this thread.

Don't know if the steps I took will help you, but they sure won't hurt.

I did see your post. I have already started down that same path. I will say my dealer has been great dropped the truck yesterday had diagnosis and part ordered today. Also suggested I keep on GM about the issue to help get the ball rolling.

My truck has been fixed I picked it up this morning after having dropped it off Monday. Pretty pleased with the turn around. According to the service advisor the valve body installed was a new part number. He says it is a redesign that should not develop the same issue again.

Where is your dealer? City, State?

Interesting that they told you on Monday that the VB had no ETA, and yet it was fixed by Thursday.

Regardless, glad for you that it's been fixed.

Hi All,

I just recently joined the club. I have a 22 5.3L V8 trail boss 86k miles(out of warranty 😵‍💫) was running great prior.Truck gears started slipping and was able to get it home. Started the next day and check engine light came on and no reverse. Was able to get it to the dealership with the reduced engine power warning. I dropped it off Friday 2/21 and was immediately diagnosed with the bad valve body issue/code. Service was very vague with me at first and gave me 2 options Valve body replacement with an estimate of $3100.00 or a full transmission of $8,000.00. I went with the valve body replacement and he said he would order the parts. I called this past week just for an update and asked about parts and then they alluded that they were on backorder from GM not another dealership and he thought he mentioned that. There is no way to track the parts? No loaners available I rely on my truck a lot for work and transporting my family of 4 around. Not very optimistic after reading these. Has anyone else experienced the brevity when asking for answers? Has anyone else had to pay for this out of pocket? Im expecting the worst and hoping for the best but not really sure where to go from here other than wait.
