Driving through Houston Texas the other day and Bang! Drivers side back door glass explodes. I have no idea what hit it but whatever it was it blew out the glass. I've had rock hits before but never had a window explode this this one did.

I've seen that before. Windshields have a layer of plastic sandwiched in. Rock hits usually won't shatter. Side windows don't have that feature. Hit it in the right spot and they will shatter. Having said that, A lug nut hit the windshield of my work van. Took it out! Had to clean the brown stains from the seat. From the picture, it looks like a direct hit from something. There is a recall in the works for some trucks where side windows have shattered. From what I understand, it's mainly on the passenger side. Worth checking in to.

Its an easy fix.  My truck was broken into a few months ago and they broke out the passenger rear window.  The glass, as well as the lower exterior trim piece which also must be replaced during a window replacement, totaled around $300 if I remember correctly.  The job took me approximately 2 hours and I was taking my time since I had never replaced one before.  I would highly suggest doing it yourself that way you can make sure that you get all of the glass out of the door.  There is nothing worse than having to remove the panel yourself and fix a rattle in your door because a lazy technician didn't take the time to get all of the glass out.

I can post the removal procedure if you want it.

Good Luck!

This happened to my dad back in the 90's on his 199x something Suburban. Just driving on the freeway and one of the back windows blew out. An unseen defect in the glass.

Luckily it's easily replaced.

I had a 2003 extended cab Z71 and it took a big hit on the passenger back glass all it did was chip the glass. I was surprised when this happened.

Thanks please do. I have an appointment already to have it replaced but would like to know how the door comes apart for future issues.

On a side note, I did not need to remove the water deflector, I only needed to partially peel it back in a few places.  Also, do not forget the red bolt shown in step 28.  I somehow missed that bolt and it really put a damper on things until I figured it out.

It looks like a lot of steps, but it really isn't, and takes no time at all.  The window literally pulls right out and a new one slides right in with no adjustment.

Thanks, though the links didn't work I think I get the process.

I had to unplug the rear defrost on my 12' F150 as they were notorious for exploding. They would get so hot they would explode and the dealership wouldn't do anything to fix it.

Windows were never a problem on the Fords I had to drive at work, transmissions were the problem.

Only transmission issue I had was a hard shift from 4 to 5 after I programed it. You had to let off during the shift.
