19,5.3,79K Miles 

After 3 weeks the dealer just called to inform me that my truck should be ready by close tomorrow or friday at the lateest.

All 16 Lifters are being replaced, along with the camshaft and timing gear setup. The service advisor stated that the tech recorded a timing issue, when he was first scanning.

Also stated that could be the cause of the sometimes low speed stutter i was having.

My powertrain Warranty is 5yr/100,000 miles which actually expires THIS MONTH on the 20th, so i got in right under the wire.

Said that pretty much the only original internal parts would be pistons,rods,crankshaft,vavles,valve springs.

I'm hoping they will give me some type of warranty extension after this.

I was about to do a coolant flush anyways, so i guess now i don't have to. :)

Best of luck.  Do you know if they found any carbon build up while they were in there?  Just curious as that is a long-term concern of mine.

There are a certain number of trucks whose lifter/cam failures are parts related. Bad batch of heat treat (soft) and the like.

 

Additionally, OEMs don't use break in oil anymore. Yes, roller cams and rings need a break in. Recommended OCI's are to long for the chemistry GM demands be used. Especially the first few. That chemistry is one step above the very low bar the API sets as minimum standard for lubrication. People don't drive and maintain as the machine requires but as they think ought to be good enough for the price they paid.  

 

If you get a factory repair, it is half*assed. How so? You grenade a cam and they replace the affected parts but the shrapnel chucked through the motor has already exacted a price.

 

The parts replaced with the same parts that just failed. 😬 

 

They do exactly the minimum. Not the minimum REQUIRED but just the minimum.

Never longer than 5k mile intervals, always full synth.

Also found out that they replaced the water pump as well since the tech saw that there was a leak at the shaft seal.

"Supposedly" they flushed the block while it was out.

They did on this one. Its listed on the repair sheet.

FYI, They repaired my 2021 Sierra SLT at 50k. New pistons and rings then valves and Camshaft. It's good now and I'm getting about 21mpg with the 6.2L. I raised 3 kinds of hell with someone at GM and got them to extend the PT warranty to 145k or year 2026. Make some noise,It might be worth it.

Its more like this DFM system is prone (imperfect design) to a higher failure rate than typical none AFM/DFM lifers.  GM is so committed to this technology that they will not change anything, failure rates are acceptable considering other alternatives, e.g. v6 engines etc.  GM is certain sales of high end SUV's and trucks would tank if the V8 engine went away. 

 

Friend just purchased a 2024 Yukon XL Denali Ultimate (6.2L) with a MSRP $102+, owns business and needs big people hauler.  Only option, Onyx Black paint $495.  Hard to find one, apparently they are hot items for dealers and in limited supply. Waited 6-months.

I meant from the factory they are no longer using break in oils. Glad to hear it that it was for the repair. 😉

I'm bumping this because I just had my second bank of lifters fail after GM refused to replace all 16 to start with at 28k. I'm now at 48k (all 16 replaced at 47k and the damaged cam). Now, I'm having non-constant/random misfires on all cylinders. Usually it seems to occur on the disengagement of the DFM. When they replaced the first bank of lifters it still did this but it's way worse than even that was. I usually change my oil between 5-6k. At this point, do I trust that metal didn't go through the engine with the damaged cam? It definitely isn't the same and GM is being a complete PITA about the whole deal. Hemming and hawing that "It's outside of the factory B-to-B and it should be fixed". They refuse to give me a 100k powertrain warranty and that severely pisses me off about this whole situation. Any advice at this point would be appreciated it. It also has a weird timing pullback (I think) where it just seems to lose power. I'm really at my wits end and this GM rep I'm dealing with makes me want to jump out of a window.

Instead of jumping out the window, just jump out the truck.  Trade it for something else.
