Just got my new `25, 5.3 here yesterday. 5 miles on it. The oil will get dumped at 500 miles AND get 5w30.

 

I pulled the stick and felt the factory oil. Man, I can feel my fingerprints. Like there`s nothing there. Imagine going the full oil life monitor distance, or longer, with viscosity breakdown.

 

These poor new engines.

Congratulations on the new truck. :) Don't ya love that new truck smell? 

 

There is about a 1.2% difference in fuel economy but about a 30% difference in wear abatement between the two oil grades. And that is assuming they stay in grade. A few years ago, I hedged the bet further switching to the Euro oils with a recommendation for Porsche C30/VW 504/507. Even these are not all created equal. 

 

I've found two that not only have the required C30/504/507 minimum 3.5 cP HTHS but beat it and have some ester in them as well to keep her clean. Red Line Euro 5W30 and AMSOIL Euro LS 5W30 (AEL). 

 

Mobil 1 ESP 5W30 will meet both the Porsche and VW viscosity specs in the bottle, but not ester bearing and given its price point, my guess would be a less stable VM polymer. It would still be an upgrade over "Energy Conserving" 2.9 HTHS 5W30 box store oils. 

 

Anyway, thoughts not recommendations on what I use in my baby.

If it was my truck, Amsoil OE 5W30, 5K OCI's.

Iv`e been trying not to go past 2500-3000 rpm`s in the 1`st oil change. I will say, it`s been a challenge. Double cab, 2wd, 5.3 with 3.42`s [NHT], and 10 speed. That thing wants to rip and it`s killing me not to bring it to 5000 or so.

I drive the way I drive from day one. I’m usually really hard on them on the test drive. What’s the redline cut off? Check. How far will it burn rubber? Check. Top speed? Check? Then to the exhaust shop, install tune. Make note of the difference. Check. After all that I usually drive the normal, my normal. That change a few years ago. Now when I want the new car smell I go to Walmart. I splurge and get the expensive new car air freshener. I usually add the leather one too. I save about 100K so far. I’m not complaining it was fun.

Yep. Like a drug fix. I used to "dyno it on the street". As we used to say, "it`s either gonna go or blow".

No matter how good an oil is, it has a useful life LIMIT. Marketing and common though says that you buy a 'better' oil to save money on oil changes. Cost twice as much so I run it twice as long. That sort of thing. Following that to its rational conclusion says what you are protecting is the wallet. Not the oil, not the equipment. Not so much...

 

Guy ought think a bit on what is meant by "BETTER" when a marketer is in control of that word. Back out of the forest and stop looking at a trees individually. 

 

With a good sized cooler and a condenser one could run tap water in a motor as a lubricant. It wont oxidize or nitrate and is a great polar solvent and yet, the though is absurd but no more so than believing base oils and base oil synergies don't matter and that the only difference between on oil and the other is the additive strategy.

 

One Group is "Just as good" is :bs:

The article says the younger folks don’t have the tech expertise to carry on the science. Experts are dying getting sick so fast there’s no info transfer going on.

This is true in my other field. Professional flying and maintenance. The younger folks aren’t getting the info or experience to do the jobs properly. Safely. 
Scary if you fly on airlines!

Oh, I get it. But sir, you can't pass on what they don't want to know. We try and get kicked like dogs. Now they get to suffer in their ignorance and arrogance. Happy us knowing that it has no impact on our equipment. Sad them. By the time they acknowledge the mistake; those that could have helped will be gone. 

 

They wanted skunk. Got skunk and now will live with the stink. :crackup:

I read a lot. A couple observations I’ve seen that influence people when it comes to oil change intervals. I just recently read an article that said follow the oil change light on the dash. Manufacturers have spent millions fine tuning with sensors to monitor the engine. When I first got a Honda when my mother in law quit driving. It was a 2015 with 7K miles on it. I know she used the dealership for service work. No record for oil changes. It had a battery replacement and a radiator flush that was it. It was 3-4 years ago when we got it. When I got the oil changed they put a sticker in the window for 5K oil change. I asked them I thought this has a 10K oil change recommended oil changes. You can do that was the answer.  My Toyota Camry has 5K maintenance, but not oil, it’s 10K My local Hyundai dealer recommended just under 4K oil changes on my wife’s Genesis. I followed it because of their warranty. No wonder people are confused. Screw it I do 5K on all but the Genesis it’s still under 4K. I have the time and oil is cheap.
