Has anyone serviced the transmission in their 24’ gasser? I’m going to be dropping the pan and replacing the filter and fluid in the next couple of weeks. I am under the impression the service should be very similar to that of Duramax trucks. Do you have to drop the exhaust to remove the pan? How much fluid does it take (I ordered 10 qts)? I would appreciate any information from someone who has done this.

I haven't done it yet but I do know you need to drop the exhaust according to the service manual.

 

When I drop my pan, I will be putting in an after market pan that has a drain plug.

I think you may be able to sneak the pan out without dropping the exhaust. It may need some prying to get it cleared or loosening of the trans mounts and prying up. I consider this an epic fail and a sure sign that Allison didnt have a huge role in this design since they have a history of building transmissions that are service friendly.

Mines good for now but I already have a Superior products drain plug setup thats going on it when I do. 

I dont have an exact count on the qts needed but I would buy a few extra just in case. 

When refilling the trans I will use the M18 nipple that I bought with the hose and run that up to the normal dipstick area rather than pumping into the side of the case. I believe I posted about the setup before. SInce I know mine is at the correct fill I will just measure the amount I drain and replace that accounting for the inevitable spillage. 

Just for grins, I got back from a trip towing my 12,500# fifth wheel in 85 degree temps and my trans never went over 176 degrees with a mic of freeway and stop and go city in the 200 miles.

Maybe its a simple regular cab thing...........  But........... 

 

I just looked under my 2024 regular cab, 6.6 gasser, 3500 4x4. The transmission drain plug is in the front  drivers side of the pan. It wont drain all of it as there is a drop down part. Then the pan can removed very easy without doing anything with the exhaust. Yes, it has to be slid forward of the exhaust then it will come right out, and go back in. 

 

Ill will attempt, to do some fluid sucking to get the rest out of the deeper part of the pan to help with less sloshing. 

 

For the others/normal people with a 4 door. Maybe someone could confirm or post that the exhaust needs to be dropped or not.

(( 64BAwagon )) You posted  right before i hit submit. Did you confirm by looking under for the 4 door people? or i can look when my friend gets back from camping next week and add to the 4 door being like my 2 door or it being a pain. He has a gmc 4 door.

Has anyone looked into if the transmission pan has a reusable gasket or is it like my past 2015 ram diesel with a pan that had, no, drain plug and the pan gasket was not reusable.

I may be mistaken but I believe that plug is used to check the level of fluid in the tranny. The correct level is obtained (while at operating temp) when fluid is reduced to a slow drain. It is not to be confused as an actual drain plug for emptying the pan.

Pan drop takes just over 14 quarts.  Dexron ULV fluid, p/n 19352619.

That is not "technically" a drain plug.  That is the fluid level check plug for checking the level.

Should be, most all the ones GM uses are these days.

I mean...yes you "can" drain a fair amount out of there but obviously you won't empty the pan.  There's a stem pipe that it screws into, it will drain fluid to a point at or just below the stem pipe, so the pan itself will still be pretty fluid loaded.

I appreciate everyone’s feedback. I ordered additional DEXRON ULV for the job. I’ll try to come back here with a detailed post of my experience. I’m sure someone else will be looking for this info in the future.

It's a fill level! If the transmission was properly filled, nothing will come out of it.

Level when shut down and level when running are different.

    • While waiting for parts I have been working on installing the AC compressor, new accumulator, and orifice tube. Also changed out the high side ball valve (original). The orifice tube that was in there wasn't too bad. Slightly dirty, a little bit of junk, but not blocked. Glad I changed it out.   The accumulator, which should have been a 5 minute job, may have just burned $50. Put some PAG in it, wrote the date and mileage on the side, fresh o-rings and gooey'd up the threads and rings with Nylog. Got everything connected and snugged and was going to vacuum down the system, and....   My manifold gauge won't fit on the port. It's not an R12 service port. It LOOKS like an R134 service port but the diameter is a hair too large. There's a sticker on the accumulator that says it's designed to be used with R12 and R134a systems only. So it's not R1234yf. Even if I reduced the diameter slightly with a file, the shoulder on the port is too large so the quick-connect valve won't lock on. I'm stumped. It's going back, and 50/50 on if they'll give me a refund.   Also, I did a fuel pressure test.... Key on, the gauge spikes to about 60psi and quickly bleeds off, like 2psi per second. The fuel isn't going into the plenum, no smell, starts fine, so I'm guessing there's a bad check valve in the pump and the fuel is just draining back into the tank. oh, hell. But, it shouldn't be a problem, pump primes just fine and the truck starts right up. It just means I can't really ever use fuel pressure to verify a leak at the injector or intake.
    • Got this yesterday out of nowhere. Truck is a 25',6.6 gasser with 8k miles.  Only semi anomaly is that the truck had been sitting, uncranked for 6 days. Elec Stability Control showed immediately upon cranking, not while driving. No drivability issues, just the message. Battery didn't seem to be weak when cranking over.  I drove it, killed it, let it sit a few hrs with no avail.  Truck is 100% stock. No damage. 
    • This can be done.  It is not cheap and requires an instrument cluster swap with custom programming, new steering wheel with the controls on it, and a special jumper harness.   The cluster upgrade - 12.3” Digital Cluster Upgrade – 2022.5–2026 Silverado / Sierra (T1 Refresh Pickup) - WAMS   The wheel upgrade - Steering Wheel Upgrade Kit – 2022.5–2026 Silverado / Sierra (T1 Refresh Pickup) - WAMS   The column harness upgrade - 2019 - 2026 Silverado / Sierra: Steering Wheel LIN Bus Harness - Harness Dr. - DIY Done Right     The problem with doing all of this?  You pretty much can't have any programming done to your truck that involves the cluster ever again.  The dealer won't be able to program the cluster as GM's system will only pull data for the cluster the truck came with.  So it would be advised also to turn off over the air updates.   TLDR;  Should have bought an LT double cab?  You'd have a power seat, the wheel controls, the cluster, all things that you've been seeking in your various posts so far about your new WT regular cab.

    • Yes.  The 2.7 Turbomax has Active Fuel Management.  It is NOT the same as the V8s.  Totally different system.     Here is an article from GM when the 2.7 came out explaining the cylinder deactivation and the valve lift system.  Starts at the section called "SCS Valvetrain":   New Turbocharged 2.7L 4-Cylinder Engine Powers Full-Size Trucks – TechLink         This is an internet myth going around.  It was alleged that some 5.3s had this mystical 8th digit of the VIN as an "E" which somehow meant it had a new one year only 5.3 that didn't have DFM.  The writer of said article and the person that made the claim conveniently can't count because they posted the VIN.  The 8th digit was a "D" which meant its still the 5.3 with DFM.  The 9th digit of the VIN was an "E" and the 9th digit isn't the engine code.  At all.
