2024 Silverado factory bedliner spray warning / heads up.

Hi.

 

My previous truck was a 2011 GMC Sierra which I had the bed sprayed a at linex shop in 2012.  The linex bedliner never chipped or cracked.  I've had gravel in there and stuff sliding around, banging against the side for 12 years.  Never an issue.  The truck was rusted out and the transmission was done but linex was still good to go.  Fast forward 12 years.   I just purchased a 2024 Silverado with the bed already factory sprayed.  I would have preferred to get it linex sprayed but employee pricing was one, and it was available. 

 

Sun, Sep 8 2024 I bought a Gorilla Ladders PRO Slim-Fold 55-inch x 14-inch Adjustable Height Aluminum Work Platform.  I keep it in the back of the truck.  Flat aluminium top, which I had on the bottom, and plastic feet.  It never occurred to me that I should be worrying about plastic...

 

Less than a month later, today, Nov 3rd, I was emptying out the truck and this is what I found (see pictures).

 

I sprayed some fluid film on the exposed area until I can get it in to the garage for warranty repair.  I live where the roads are salted all winter so hopefully this doesn't reoccur at some point and cause more issues when it was supposed to prevent them.

 

If you are ordering a truck, DO NOT the bed factory sprayed.  Have it done by a shop that does linex or similar quality product.  It can't take plastic sliding over it  for less than a month.  That work platform wasn't in there for the full month either, although I can't remember how long it wasn't there.

They must have cheapined them up. My 2015 Sierra had a factory spray in liner it held up great for all 9 years I had it. My 2024 did not come with one. I kinda like not having one. Sprays out easy and sweeps out easy. Mine usually has mud in it from my dirtbikes.

The odds of having a bed rust through because of this is a million to one.  I have factory spray in liner  on my 2024 and had one on my 2017 High Country. Neither had any issues.


Many truck accessory dealers are using different flavors of spray in bedliner because Linex is expensive because of licensing issue or something. I forget the details. So most bed liners around here will be another brand and I dont feel that they are better or worse than GM.

If I could have found a truck on the lot I wanted without a liner I would have bough it and put a full bedrug in it. but I could so ended up with factor spray in bed liner and the bed rug mat.

Seems like the fault of whomever loaded the bed to not secure the load, IMO.

PS - The upfitter  (Ground Effects) who does the bedliners is right next to the assembly plant.  According to them the liner is applied by robots, not humans.

Fair point.  The platform wasn't secured.  Thing is, I've been carrying stuff like that for years.  Doesn't mean it was smart , but the previous truck had Linex which wasn't as slippery so I got away with it for 12 years.  I'll be getting a bed mat since I had some dewalt toughsystem in the box this week and they were moving around like they were on ice.

I've had 3 trucks with the factory spray liner.  Never had an issue.  Brake rotors for scrap, ladders, etc.  No gouges, tears, nothing.

My 2012 has factory liner, my previous truck had Linex. Linex thicker, better quality.

      How many years have I pointed out every point in that link to the folks here and been avalanched with criticisms and outright hostilities at times? I ran counter to even the great CUSTOMBOSS and Lake Speed Jr and the half dozen experts on YouTube and in the final.....GM, Physics (Stribeck) backs that Grumpy old Bear.    Honestly, I never said a thing engineering hadn't studied silly and laid in concrete during WWII. But I'm old, the information is old and yet, the Laws of Physics are eternal.    Okay there is one exception. I vehemently disagree with their use of the word 'tolerances' when what it meant is "clearance".   The clearance is the distance between two objects. The tolerance is the degree of acceptable variation permitted in that clearance. I.E., piston to bore clearance is 0.004" with a tolerance of +/- .0002" so the clearance is in specification if it lies between 0.0038" and 0.0042". Cutting that 'tolerance in half has ZERO impact on lubrication requirements. Makes for more difficulty in manufacturing.  But a tighter clearance 'MAY'. Depends on finish. Anyway....   It's one of those statements made by people to make themselves look smarter than they are to convince people who are as un-enlighten as they seem to manipulate their behaviors. But hey, the blind leading the blind puts them both in the pit.

      Out and about yesterday on a long Saturday drive I passed a lot of Shell stations. My preferred, so I pay attention. Lot's of small town Illinois so not six stations in three blocks like the city.    Everyone of them over a radius of say 100 miles had regular at $4.19 but one which was the one closest to home at $4.15. However Premium pricing varied greatly between 85 cents over regular to $1.50 over. I'm not counting the price of the station with the lowest regular so the reference is the same for the remainder and all within the same brand. However the spread discrepancy holds across all brands.     @txab, any thoughts on that?

      What are your thoughts? The Chevy Blazer relaunch was an epic case of 'lunchbag letdown'. Jeep Wranglers and Ford Broncos stick out like a sore thumb.    The AI photos do not look like a 'retro version', but shrunken Tahoes. Get away from the 'futuristic look'. I've seen two concepts. One had rectangular headlight like a Rivian and the other way too big headlights (similar to a previous non-Wrangler SUV) should include dual round headlights like the early version.   If not this would look OK   At least it has GM styling (albeit the K2XX) A lot of the images floating around look like Bronco IIs or the current Bronco. Looking at the Broncos in my area (central Ontario, it seems to be a mix of 2 doors and 4 doors, 'mall rated' to ones that could go offroad.    I'm sure a AT4 and AT4X RPOs could be outfitted similar to a Rubicon if the braintrust understood the whole offroad scene. Crossing my fingers that if it does see the light that the front air dam/bumper doesn't extend below the center line of the tire...
