Hello, I have a 2024 chevy 2500 HD with the gas 6.6L l8t and it is having oil consumption issues, I was down in Tennessee not hauling anything completely empty (originally from Wisconsin) and the "oil low add oil" warning came on, thankfully I was at a hotel and had a buddy with me so we went and got oil and I changed the oil in the hotel parking lot, this was at roughly 27k to 28k miles, I thought nothing of it as I was past my usual oil change interval and just assumed I took too long to change it, I usually change it at around every 5k miles and the last oil change was at 20k. But then at 30791 the "low oil add oil" light came on again, so I checked the dip stick and sure enough its bone dry, I slowly added oil until it was at the full level on the dip stick and it took roughly 3 quarts to get it to full on the stick. It's under warranty but dealer isn't taking it very seriously, they just want to change my oil and see if it happens again, I have used mobil 1 full synthetic 5w-30 for every oil change and had no issues and now all of a sudden it has issues, I have thought maybe the pcv valve has gone bad but can't find anything on the internet about it or where it even is or if this truck even has one, any input would be greatly appreciated

I'm curious if there's any correlation with the l8t oil consumption and how the truck is broken in.

I have a theory that the trucks that have the oil consumption issue were broken in too eaisly, and not ran hard enough in the first 1,500 or so miles. It's definitely not the oil being used, as it happens at random, to engines regardless of brand.

I took it easy on mine and it’s not using oil.

My opinion, any motor, any year, it's a chance you take weather it going to burn oil.

It sounds like your 2024 Chevy 2500 HD is consuming more oil than expected. Since you're using Mobil 1 full synthetic and the issue persists, it could be a faulty PCV valve or internal engine wear. Since it's under warranty, insist on an oil consumption test at the dealership to determine if it’s within normal limits and to check for potential engine issues.

Where does the PCV valve come into play??? I have a 2024 3500 with the 6.6 L8T gasser. The PCV valve goes between it and the drivers side valve cover. The passengers side valve cover goes between it and the air box after the filter. NO, oil or oil vapor goes into the intake on the L8T, i have proven that with the experiment of a catch can.... A simple removal of said passengers side tube between valve cover and intake box, will prove its clean.

The can only catches moisture and some oily vapor stuff, not much, but lots of water in the cold temps.

((( is a catch can needed ))) NO........... But how would one know its not needed if one dont install one first.

The poster was also a 1 poster and done, so take it from there as wellllll.

What is it? I understand it on the clean side, the valve cover but what is it on the PCV side if it goes TO the valve cover...from if from is the valve cover? :dunno:  Also, does you L8T use oil?

Yes for real. Where does the dirty side originate and terminate? IT isn't a place

You don't say what IT is or where IT is. You said:

So if it vapors, and there are always vapors, doesn't go to the intake on the L8T, then that isn't IT. Does the L8T have a road draft tube?

Only you know what your meaning is, I just asked for clarity.

BTW, I'm happy YOUR motor doesn't use any oil. None of them should. 😉

My world isn't the one in question and it wasn't a game. It was an honest question. Your sentence makes no sense TO ME.

But fine, you don't want me to understand you... I'm good. There is no education in the second kick of a mule. You have a nice day. :wtf:

Both mine had a 12k trailer behind them at 500 miles. Never added a drop of oil to either one between oil changes. I used either Kirkland 5W30 or GM Dexos full syn on them.

You've probably mentioned this before but how many miles were you typically putting on between oil changes ?

It varied. The vast majority was towing but typically  less than 5k. I never liked to leave on a trip without fresh oil. The OLM usually would zero out around 7k but I never got close to that. I also changed the oil when new at the 500 mile mark. I buy all my supplies on sale or clearance so I spend way less than most people.

I would suspect too that going on a trip, even though you are towing, the amount of hours the engine ran would be far less than the messing around town and lots of starts with a cold engine to build up contaminants. So far I have changed my oil twice, once at 600 miles 90% and again just now at 1100 85% as I don't even have 1700 miles on it yet and all I can say is the oil didn't go down after the 1100 miles for what little data that is worth.

So far had bought some mobil 1  0W-30 that I will use for the winter and some mobil 1   5W-30 truck and suv oil ( more advertising than substance I imagine ) and both times I waited until a store had them on sale. Still not cheap though as the Costco oil is certainly the best price around that I have seen. While I buy a lot of oil through bulk suppliers for the farm, they often do not have anything special for a price and for that matter don't carry this type of oil which is odd.
