NAV and 6 disk changer in a Silverado

I noticed the problem with my INR (joystick) after I picked the vehicle up. I couldn't make it into the dealership until after the weekend & this was back in Feburary. They looked at it for a while the turned it over to GMC Tac. They finally sent a replacement INR and installed it, but got no sound. I 'm guessing the swapped out my non-Lux for a LUX INR. Since then I'm still getting the run around with the crap amp and non-lux radio part number #15108421.

 

I ordered my 04 Envoy based on past experiences with my 02 Envoy, the sales brouchures, GMC website feature descriptions (still there as of today) & Bose specs of the sound system. The INR I ordered ( the only one they offer for the 04 Envoy when ordering), states the systems has "auto-tone control". I did not get what I ordered and GMC can't seem to understand what my problem is.

 

Rather than waste money on a attorney, biting into GMC's bottom line is cheaper. I know they've lost sales of 4 vehicles thanks in part to me...haha Maybe I'll stop doing that one of these days or when they fix they blunder.

Well, maybe they can at least look at the amp. 3 connectors or 2 in that platform.

 

Then they can put in a `4335 HU if it has the lux amp you wanted. Otherwise it isn't that easy, they can't just wire in the connector, a mic and connect the class II DATA wire. The other connectors are wired differently also. Same for the RSA/Aux HVAC rear controls (audio wiring). Simply, it's a whole different harness set. I hope they know that!!

 

They should outfit it the way you ordered it! They CAN do that, hassle or not.

 

Another hitch they may be running into is trying to set up these HU's via TIS. They don't. Only the NON-Nav radios do.

I wished the GMC dealer I was dealing with didn't shift personnel around, I could ask the parts guy, he may know, but he's a service writer now...

 

You wouldn't believe how many dealers don't know what they're doing when it comes to this stuff. Fortunately there are some that do. Then the personnel leaves for greener pasture!

Just an update for those interested:

 

I installed the 2005 nav touchscreen to replace my 04 in dash 6 disk changer, and it works perfectly.

 

Its plug and play, I have the bose y91 lux amp and steering wheel controls, and all is functional and sounds great.

Hmmmm... A `287 is for the Non-Class II amp!

 

Are you sure you have the Y91 amp or are you just looking at the glovebox sticker?

 

The Y91 in the RPO codes for your vehicle, or the glovebox sticker DO NOT guarantee that you have the amp, it's just likely you do.

 

Y91 is a "Luxury" package by definition. One example is the Sierra Denali: Common to have the Y91 but not so common to have the Class II "Y91" type amp!

 

Y92 does not guarantee it either, that defines "Special Edition". Like a Northface Edition Avalanche, which itself, doesn't come with a factory installed Class II amp.

 

If you have the "spacious" audio profile and noise-cancelling (audio, not speed-compensatiing), then you do have the class II amp, we so commonly call the Y91.

 

Also if a Tech2 communicates with it.

 

A Tech2 won't "see" a dumb amp.

I didn't check, but maybe it has the harness also...

 

Simple:, low price, high shipping and a no return policy or support....

or pay more but have full support and instructions, etc.

Sperry I've got a question for you regarding my 2003 Sierra Denali. The Y91 is listed on the glove box. I've successfully hooked up the PAC C2A-GM24 adapter to add a sub to the factory system. My cousin with an '03 Silverado with the Bose package tried to install the same adapter without success. When I talked to the guy at PAC he said it was due to him not having the right amp. I'm assuming that I have the luxury amp in my truck because of the compatibility list for this adapter:

Vehicle application: 2003 - Escalade (all), Trail Blazer LT, Trail Blazer LTZ, Envoy SLT, Sierra Denali, Yukon Denali, Hummer H2

 

Do you think I'm right in assuming that I have the luxury amp because of this adapter working? I suppose I could take a look at the actual amp the next time I have the center console apart if I had to.

You likely do, especially if you can select the "spacious" contour.

The AAIGM24 won't work with the dumb amp because the wiring is different (as well as the levels) It rely's on the Class II amp's communication with the HU to operate also..

 

The 03 Sierra Denali is more likeley to have the smart amp than the 04... I just hadn't nailed down a pattern yet. SI is too general but they were specific enough to isolate a "closer" pattern in the H2's.

 

I ran into this at the GMC dealer - the tech was racking his brain trying to comm with the amp in an 04 Sierra Denali. That day I drove up to program my chime and Br Light Ind (AKA "BLI"). I didn't pay much attention to his delimma but as he connected up the Tech2, he commented about the prog document (#) I handed him didn't work on the new truck.

 

When we were done with mine as it didn't dim the BLI enough or lower the chimes one bit (This isn't the two settings from the head unit), he was still puzzled with the other truck. He removed a UC6 HU to install a Nav like I did (new truck - customer wanted one). The doc didn't work on the Denali! I told him my delimma and I watched him open up the console - There it was, a crap amp!!

 

I told him he'd better call the folks that I was dealing with...

 

Since that truck just came in and it was January, I'm leaning toward believing they pulled the same crap as they did the H2's...That's why I mentioned it prior..

 

I hadn't asked how that turned out, but certainly recall it enough to place it among the other puzzles.

 

Hindsight: I didn't know then to check the Gl-Box for the Y91.. It should have been there though, it was a Denali!

 

Silverado's unfortunately get the crap amp for the Boze systems..

That adapter shouldn't have worked in it.

 

Fortunately the 10377287 TNR Nav HU Does...

OK, I've just read all nine pages of this thread. I know that one of the key points to this nav upgrade is to have the Bose system. So, what if I don't have the Bose system? I still want the TNR. So, help me out, what can I do to get this installed.

I have a 2003 Silverado 2500HD LS that didn't have the Bose system either. I used a Nav Headunit out of Ponitiac Vibe and it works great I also added the 6 disc changer to the center console and it works great also even the steering wheel buttons work with it. The Nav unit is GM part number 12222169. It was basically plug and play, I did have to make my own brackets to secure the headunit in the dash opening because the brackets that came on it where for the pontiac. I bought the headunit, antenna, and dvd map disc on ebay. This is the ebay item number if you would like to see it 7923421701.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, it's close but not what I was looking for. I am trying to get the touchscreen navigation unit. I don't think yours is touch-screen, or am I mistaken?

Your right, mine is not a touchscreen, those are not available for those of us that don't have the Bose system. But I'm sure where will be one in the future.

I wouldn't doubt that the 10377287 would work if you had an adapter & aftermarket amp, and a matching set of speakers for the amp you choose. Find a place for the sub, wire it up hook things up, etc.

 

The output of that HU is variable and has it's own "EQ" so it may be a bit limited. The only "complaints" (mine included) was the "quality from the other HU's of that configuration (the "Premium" grade system), was the amp it was connected to.

 

The factory "Premium" amp is just as "dumb" as an aftermarket one. (Dumb is not intended as insult, it just isn't a class II controlled amp.)

All you really need is the standard 9 pin AUX harness ($22, and the part number is here on this thread someplace). Just pull the pins out of one end and put them in the correct place on the 12 way (C2) harness on the rear of the radio. Worst case scenario is you will have to get a 12 pin connector if you dont have any AUX inputs such as "OnStar, RSE, RSA, CDX, Etc". The wiring diagram that i made for hooking up an external factory 6 CD changer is also in this thread someplace.

 

As far as the Changer itself, make sure its the one with "metal ears" on it and NOT the side squeeze clips. The part number for the changer is in this thread too (this thread is so long i am to lazy to look through it to find it...). I got mine off of E-bay for $65. The harness cost $22.....so i got my 6 disk changer in and working for less than $100.
