NAV and 6 disk changer in a Silverado

I talked to a person at Model Electronics.  They can only sell the unit, not the CD or antenna.  Cost is about $1600.  He recommended going to a dealer.

 

Also, he said the INR radio part number I gave him will only work with a "dumb" non Class 2 amp.  That sounds to me like pre 2003 to me.

The price must have went up some, the last INR I got for someone was $1,320 but that was over a year ago.

The INR's where only made in 2003 and 2004, the class II databus was also put in all fullsize trucks and SUV's in 03, the Trailblazer and Envoy got it in 02.

GM didn't start offering the nav units till the 04 models.

All the non-lux models are the "dumb" non class II amps, only the lux amp is a class II witch needs the databus. That is why when we upgrade to the lux amp we have to add the databus wire to the amps connector. All the headunits are class II but the non lux amps are not.

 

Ebay has the INR's for around $500 or so and the TNR's for $1000 or so and most dealerships won't charge to much to remove the theftloc.

Thanks for the response!  It looks like I'll be hunting for a non-lux HU.  It doesn't seem worth upgrading the amp.

New question: If a vehicle is equipped with OnStar, there are already GPS coordiantes available on the vehicle's data bus.  Has anyone heard of using these coordinates instead of running a seperate GPS antenna for the HU?  Or am I completely off in even thinknig this may be possible?

The onstar antenna and the nav GPS antenna are two different animals and can not be used for any purpose other than what they where made for. The nav HU does not use the info received from the onstar service. Onstar is more like a cellular setup that uses triangulation whereas the nav actually uses the GPS satalite signals.

Well, I took it to the dealer to have the theftloc removed and now it doesn't work !!!! Now there is no soundfields available as before (spacious, driver, etc) and just talk and custom as if it were a 6-disc out of a truck. Great. The volume indication runs up and down, I can change channels and everything.....just no sound.

 

WTF did they do when they unlocked it? They told me they had to pull the code out and then relearn the radio for that VIN. I told them it was out of a H2 and that I just wanted it unlocked, but he said the VIN programming was part of the process. Man, I'm hot right now.

No, he didn't know at first I put in a different amp until they started having issues. Where I do go from here?

I also assumed they programmed it for the non-lux and mentioned it to them, but they did not know how to reprogram it back. The only thing they said was that with the truck VIN, the radio would not have those options and didn't know how to fool it into thinking it was a Lux HU.

I don't know the whole precedure but this is the basic info. I do know that they have to go into service programming and recalibrate the BCM with the RPO codes that match a lux 6 disc changer and I believe that is :

UQ7 - Bose enhanced audio speaker system

UC6 - 6 disc radio RDS ETR AM/FM

Y91 - Bose uplevel audio system luxury edition

If you can, get the codes from the H2 that was the doner of your HU

once they recalibrate the service program they will have to redo the HU so it learns the changes.

Once your VIN is recalibrated with the RPO codes of the lux system, the HU will preform as a Lux unit once again.

If the tech still has questions or problems have him call Techline and explain what you did. I know they understand, we have done this here several times.

Programmable Truck Radios

This information applies to 2003-2005 C/K Trucks and Utilities and 2004-2005 S/T Trucks and Utilities. Service programming of the radio on these vehicles requires the part number of the radio and the appropriate RPO codes. You can reduce time in programming replacement radios on these vehicles by following these steps.

 

1. Before installing a replacement radio, obtain the GM part number from the label on the radio.

 

2. Verify that your Tech 2 has the latest software version.

 

3. Using the Tech 2, "Request Info" from the radio that is going to be programmed. Always follow proper procedures and precautions.

 

4. Before entering TIS2000, enter your VIN into GM VIS to obtain the RPO codes of the radio and speaker configuration for this vehicle. (For example, verify if the vehicle was built with UQ3, UQ5, or UQ7 speakers, with or without Y91/Y92.)

 

TIP: This will allow you to make the correct calibration selections in TIS2000. Selecting the incorrect calibrations for your vehicle configuration can damage the radio and lead to unnecessary delays in repair time.

 

5. When replacing or installing a NEW radio, you must select "Replace and Program Module" from the TIS menu.

 

6. Program the vehicle as usual.

That is good info. The only problem is step #4 since I don't have a valid H2 VIN. I think if they put in my VIN (which I think they may have done), it'll only bring up the RPO codes specific to my truck and won't be correct. I guess I would be able to put some of this information to good use if I could play around with the Tech2 myself and figure this out.

 

BBSilverado -- I would appreciate and do appreciate any help you can provide in this matter. The more I can take to them, the easier it should make it. They are uncomfortable doing this the way it is, and I don't want them to deny me help on a somewhat unusual modification.

I went to my local GM dealer to see what they could do for TNR/INR units. None of the part numbers given above came up in their database, so they could not provide a price.

 

Also, while there, I looked at a new 05 Denali with a TNR unit. I noticed that the trim panel that goes in front of the unit is more "square" than the one in my 2003 Sierra. Is this going to present a fit problem if I use the latest TNR unit?

First of all, let me say that i cant believe this post i started over a year ago is still going...LOL.

 

Firetiger, there will be some that disagree with me and that is fine,,,,but let me tell you the EXACT same thing happened to me when i finished my install. Here was my solution:

 

Pull out the AMP and install a used AMP from a working vehicle. For some reason i can not, under any circumstances, program an AMP in my truck. I have yet to see it be done at all. You can program them in Avalanches, suburbans, and tahoes....but not the C/K platform. Simple reason is this.....for all the ones i mentioned there is a counter vehicle that comes equipped with the Y91 option....for example:

 

Avalanche - Cadillac EXT

Suburban - Yukon Denali

etc...

 

There is no C/K truck in any variety that come equipped with the Y91 option and this seems to be the reason they cannot be programmed in this body style. Some will say they can, but i have yet to witness it first hand. Get yourself another AMP, have the theft lock removed (with the harness pulled at the AMP if it makes you feel safer).

I'm getting conflicting info on this issue and I'm trying to sort it all out. I appreciate all the help but it seems like everyone has a different idea and it makes it a little difficult to get this all put in perspective so bare with me.

 

The theftloc is removed. I believe they did that when they turned my lux 6-disc into a premium 6-disc.

 

I still have those lovely door chimes.

 

The amp is used and was working before Cletus and Jethro from the dealership tried to remove the theftloc.

 

 

Linda - So you are saying that if I were to get another LUX amp (good luck) and plugged it in, my problems would disappear and my headunit would be a lux unit once again? I'm not an expert, but from what I read I think I'm in deeper than that right now. I need the radio re-flashed as a 2003 H2 6-disc (lux). Then I'll deal with the amp.
