seadoons Posted May 3, 2004 Posted May 3, 2004 A few days ago I received a letter from GM concerning a tailgate cable recall. Basically says they are going to replace the galvanized steel tailgate cables with stainless steel ones, and until they are swaped out, don't stand, sit, or apply loads onto the tailgate while it is open. It also says to remove the tailgate when loading heavy loads into the bed. Interesting...parts aren't available yet. "Based on the anticipated schedule, dealers should have parts for a first group of vehicles later this summer." Mine have not had problems, though my brothers have. A lot of people in my family have a silverado, and lots have 4 wheelers, etc. It is concerning...
RyanbabZ71 Posted May 3, 2004 Posted May 3, 2004 thats not the actual recall letter. Thats a Pre-recall letter just to let you know what and what not to do. The actual recall will be coming out sometime soon
Scott02Z71 Posted May 3, 2004 Posted May 3, 2004 Well, i havent gotten either letter, but my cable broke today while moving a buddy of mine. I about fell off the tailgate, needless to say, not happily. Scott
DrFock352 Posted May 3, 2004 Posted May 3, 2004 mine broke last week while hauling lumber. only the left side broke so all the weight twisted my tailgate. Got to put my sholder into it to close it now. Wonder if chevy will replace that as a result of the recall.
gnutruk Posted May 3, 2004 Posted May 3, 2004 I got that exact same letter. For everyone who has had a cable break, and suffered tail gate damage, I don't think GM will have a leg to stand on in any court proceeding. If your tail gate got dented or twisted, and if they balk at giving a complete repair or replacement, smile sweetly and tell them how nice it will be to see them next -- in Small Claims Court. gnutruk
95_togo Posted May 3, 2004 Posted May 3, 2004 i did not get this yet - is it "year" specific? or is there a year window? i think i broke one of mine too - can't remember, but this would be cool if i could get them replaced for free!
atomoverride Posted May 3, 2004 Posted May 3, 2004 I got it...its some kind of ha ha ha you cant sue us because we warned you letter. The recall isnt effective yet.
95_togo Posted May 3, 2004 Posted May 3, 2004 despite the fact that it isn't effective yet, what is the year "window" or is it ONE year specifically that is affected?
silverado man Posted May 3, 2004 Posted May 3, 2004 its 2000-2004. the 99 guys are SOL And that's a bunch of . They better include us in that reacall.
frdfandc Posted May 4, 2004 Posted May 4, 2004 I got mine a few weeks ago. Of course I don't sit on my tailgate or lay anything on it that is too heavy.
desrtrat Posted May 4, 2004 Posted May 4, 2004 Well, i havent gotten either letter, but my cable broke today while moving a buddy of mine. I about fell off the tailgate, needless to say, not happily. Scott the understanding i have is if thay brake take the truck in for warntee work and thay will replace with old style cables. when the new stainless cables are available at dealers just take it in for replacement of bouth cables
99silveradoz71 Posted May 4, 2004 Posted May 4, 2004 And that's a bunch of . They better include us in that reacall. d**n straight
dstktmusa Posted May 4, 2004 Posted May 4, 2004 Received my letter 2 days ago saying to watch out when using your tailgate. It also said the parts are not available yet and they will send another letter when parts are available.
