Steering Radio Controls

Ok, got it working, and figured it out!!

Looks like maybe just the WT package did not have the lights wired for the cruise control.

Under the driver side dash, there is a wire harness and plug. It is kinda off white with a blue bracket that clamps to hold the harness together. If you undo the harness, look for the dark brown wire. Careful, because there is a black w/ white stripe and a black wire. Make sure you get the brown wire. I cut it, and tapped it on to the dash lights. Now my steering wheel radio and cruise control light up!!

I would have taken pictures, but there was barely enough room up in there for my two bear paws, let alone a camera!! Hopefully I explained it well enough, for anyone else who is in the same situation!!

Awesome! Glad to hear. Always nice to see people take initiative and just do s**t!

What a great site! I am a first time GMC owner. 2008 1500 4X4. So far so good.

Did anyone ever determine if the radio controls would work with the standard 1 disc CD factory radio? I would probably buy the steering wheel assembly with everything included. Also, how would I find the steering wheel P/N (including Cruise and radio controls) for a 2008 GMC Sierra 4X4 SLE with Titanium interior?

I have the single disc factory radio and it works just fine with mine. As for the part number, your best bet is to stop by the dealer, find the exact wheel you want and then write down the VIN from that vehicle. Give that VIN to customer service at gmpartsdirect.com and ask them for the steering wheel part number. Once you get that, type it into their search box, get the resulting page and then buy it. I bought mine on eBay for $99 rather than $200 new but I got lucky and found one. Just keep your eyes out, they show up frequently but go pretty fast.

EDIT: Here's one in Titanium.

Quick question,

I just ordered the audio control module for the steering wheel a couple days ago and picked it up today. I noticed it was the not all black, but nothing that paint can't fix. Anyways I have the steering wheel with just the cruise ccontrol. I noticed that it is plug and play for the audio controls. Now when I take my airbag off is there going to be that secondary plug sitting in there. Im not sure if the wiring harness for the cruise is not 1 plug that splits to each control. I also noticed that some cutting is going to be needed. You guys think I can order the shroud that backs the steering wheel? so I won't have to risk messing the cutting up? I'm still researching part numbers and if you guys are looking for the part number for the audio controls here it is #15824117.

thanks,

Chase

You need to read this thread in it's entirety. Also, if you have a GMT800 and not a 900, this thread is not going to help you at all.

Yeah, that sucks. I made the same mistake though. Sometimes going the cheap route costs a little bit more!

Are you running an 800 or 900, BTW?

Does anyone know if the heated steering wheel would work if I put one of those in? How exactly do you turn the heater on anyway?

Search. This has been discussed. It may have even been discussed in this thread.

Yes, you can add the heated steering wheel from the Denali. I purchased one to match my interior which is Ebony from Nordstroms for about $200 and then I had to purchase the SIR Coil from a Denali Truck which has the wiring provisions for the Heated Wheel....that SIR Coil is around $80 bucks or so....You'll just need to install the New Coil and Wheel and run a power and ground from the heated steering wheel plug on the SIR Coil. I have it and its worked great for about 6 months now.

Getting back to the topic at hand...

Dropped in on the dealer today. Said it wouldn't be any issue with the warranty and they could install it for $48 (knowing I'm going to order it from somewhere else). Sounds like I'm not going to deal with blowing my face off with an airbag.
