a_guerrajr Posted November 21, 2007 Posted November 21, 2007 Ok Well I was a Colorado owner and traded it for a new Silverado. I use Mobil 1 in my Colorado and it worked like a champ, what do you guys use in the 5.3L engine? It was fully-synthetic Mobil 1, should i continue to use this on the new truck. Or is there something better for these engines? Thanks
unit731 Posted November 21, 2007 Posted November 21, 2007 I am a skeptic. Anyone have data the synthetic oil makes a difference? Like scientific studies not funded by Mobil. . .

Draenor Posted November 21, 2007 Posted November 21, 2007 Bobistheoilguy is about all I know. I use Amsoil myself.
slimjim2525 Posted November 21, 2007 Posted November 21, 2007 I'm not a big believer in synthetic either. It's funny, I used to be but have had a change of heart. I use valvoline 5w30, and change it every 7.5k. And synthetic has gotten so expensive nowadays, I don't think it's justified to use it anymore, for really nominal benefit.
tigerbait Posted November 21, 2007 Posted November 21, 2007 unfortunately mobil 1 is no longer a group IV full synthetic. It is a group III, which means its a dino oil refined to a point the law allows it to be called a full syn. W/ that being said, it is still a very good oil choice, and it doesn't cost a lot. Dino is fine if you are willing to change it every 3k miles. However, if you tow regularly, then a full syn is the only way to go. Royal Purple, Amsoil, German Castrol, and Redline are the only easily available group IV full syn's on the market. If cost is an issue, stick with dino every 3k, if not go w/ a full syn. Also remember to stick w/ good filters too....AC Delco, Wix, Mobil, Napa Gold...etc. Stay away from Fram and K&N. Just my .02 Dustin

Bish Posted November 21, 2007 Posted November 21, 2007 I look at it like cheap insurance. I run the 5 QT Walmart specials so it costs me less than $30 to change my oil. I have been using Mobil 1 since about 3,000 miles. I'm at 201K now and the oil is still full before each oil change (5,000 miles). I also do oil analysis and they say the wear is like it had 20K on it. I started using it because I knew I was going to own it for a long time with high mileage. If you never keep your vehicle past 100K I say stick with dino as you won't likely see a benefit.
Zembonez Posted November 21, 2007 Posted November 21, 2007 I am a skeptic. I tend to agree. I have used synthetic in my vehicles but I don't know if there is any REAL benefit. I think a good maintenance schedule is far more important than what brand of oil you use.
VMax2007 Posted November 21, 2007 Posted November 21, 2007 Valvoline 5W-30 and AC-Delco Oil filter every 3000 miles. I am a fan of frequent oil changes, clean oil is more important than "dino vs synthetic" IMO.
solarjustin Posted November 21, 2007 Posted November 21, 2007 Just use oil that meets the GM standard. I can't remember but on the back of the oil jug it will list THIS OIL MEETS OR EXCEDS THESE STANDARDS ....GM....
bigedpa Posted November 21, 2007 Posted November 21, 2007 oil + filter doesnt mean squat unless it is done consistantly. a good dino (personally valvoline 5w30) and good filter a/c or wix and 3k intervals will run forever no matter how you use it
LAGA Posted November 21, 2007 Posted November 21, 2007 I use German Castrol in my VMAX. Even though it is a 0w-30 it is a "thick" 30 weight oil at operating temps. It is almost a 40 weight. Makes the 6.0 idle real quiet. Plus, it is a true group IV syn.
Bostonsfavson Posted November 21, 2007 Posted November 21, 2007 I went from using conventional oil (Pennzoil) to synthetic (Mobil 1) and ended up back at conventional. Even if the cost per quart was the same, I think I'd still go with Pennzoil. Just change regularly (I do it at 4k miles) and you'll be fine. An earlier post advised staying away from Fram filters. All I can say is that I've always used Fram filters and that I've never had a problem. I consider them to be a quality product. We use the Fram Extra Guard on our work trucks, also never a problem.
