I want to know want is the difference in mpg between a 2001 gmc sierra 1500 5.3L and a 2001 F150 4.6L. witch one is better in general and witch one has a better mpg. I heard that the 5.3L had a better mpg than the 4.6L is that true???

MPG rules changed.

In 2008, the 5.3 gets one more MPG than the 4.8 - an least on the window sticker. Other variables apply.

But the 5.3 is $600.00 more.

When I ordered my new 2008 I did the math. It would take me 75,000 miles just to get my money back between a 4.8 and a 5.3.

Now granted, the 5.3 has more umph. So that does play into factoring.

Also, the residual or resale value may be more with a 5.3. So many factors are in play.

I would expect around 2mpg higher on a gmc with a 5.3 over a ford with the 4.6.

Until last year, I was a "Ford guy" so I would say that, overall, the F150 is the better truck.

However, GM has always been known to get better economy than Ford. I think this is due partially to their engine designs and partially because their trucks are signficantly lighter than Ford's. So, if both trucks are equipped (cab, 4WD, etc) the same, I'd say the 5.3L will get the same or slightly better economy as the 4.6L. The GM will definitely have more "get up and go"!

I know a guy who has a '99 (?) F 150 4X2 supercab with the 4.6 liter and he says that the fuel economy is not that great (14 MPG) and that the truck absolutely sucks as a towing vehcile. Terrible performance and fuel economy even with a moderately heavy trailer.

I owned a 01 Ford Supercrew 4X4 with the 5.4 and an 01 Chevy Ext Cab 4X4 with the 5.3. The ford had a 3.55 rear end the Chevy a 3.73. The Chevy got around 3 MPG better in the same driving routine than the ford. Granted the ford was heavier crew vs ext cab and the ford had a 5.4 not the 4.6 you asked about. It's been my experience you cannot be a GM 5.3 on fuel economy in a full size truck.

I called my local Ford parts department a year or so ago and told them I was interested in a truck. told them I was going to buy either Ford or GM, they told me if mpg mattered to forget the Ford...... I did ;)

I know this is isn't about a MPG but when my GMC 5.3 was in the shop due to a stupid driver....(no not me)...they gave me a Ford 4.6L to drive. There was no comparison for comfort or get up and go. The Ford lost on both accounts. Now that I think, I do think it was worse on gas than my crew cab. It was a king cab. I think I would have to buy an awfully expensive F250 to compare to the comfort level of my 2005 SLE Z71.

In what way is a 2001 F150 better then a 2001 Silverado???? Gas Mileage?? NO! HP, or Torque??, NO! the interior on the 01 F150's looks like it is from the 80's and the exterior syling on the 01 F150 is bland. I will give the 04 and up F150's some credit but an 01??

Did GM make a 4.8 then? If so, why would you compare a 4.6 to a 5.3. If they did not, then nevermind.

Why not compare the 4.6 to the 5.3? If the 5.3 in 2001 got better mileage than the Ford 4.6 in 2001, then obviously the 4.8 would also get better mileage. That's not so sure now with the 5.3's being equipped with the active fuel management and the 4.8's not being equipped with it.

Why won't GM make a 4.8 with AFM? Don't they want us to have a full size truck that gets 25 mpg?

Don't kid yourself....AFM amounts to virtually nothing....It would amount to even less in a 4.8. My 6.0 barely ever stays in 4 mode unless coasting or under 60 MPH on a flat freeway with the cruise on. Running 4 cyls only on a 4.8 would not provide enough power.
