I have a 2006 Sierra 1500 ext Cab 4x4 with the 5'8" box. I also have this code happening, but I can't find this part under my truck. Where would it be? The only part of the fuel system by the tank is the big rectangular box that I assume is both a fuel filter on the pressure line and something else for the return line. There are no wires or anything like that nearby for this.

 

Where would I find this evap solenoid on this specific truck????. I have the replacement part ready to install....

Found it above the tank over the frame rail, almost inaccessible. The engineer that chose that location needs a serious kick in the nads.....inexcusable..

There ought to be a law......

Yep, easy to just pull the bed to replace.

No thanks. Plus, it's actually under the cab & wouldn't easily be accessible by lifting the bed.

 

Got it out and moved it to a new location above the main charcoal? canister. See pics.

 

Also, was able to use the bracket by putting a bend in it and using the existing bolt on the crossmember for the main filter/canister bracket. Used the same wiring connector by pulling it out of the main loom for about a foot or so.

This new location is where the thing should have been mounted in the first place. It's inexcusable that the bed, or cab should need to be lifted, or tank dropped, to do any type of maintenance, incl. the fuel pump.......That's :bs:

Good to see you were able to get at it. Mine is under the bed. I pulled the bed to change out my fuel pump. Yes is sucks and shouldn't be designed that way. But it is one way to bring $$$ into the dealership. I'm now getting a P0442 code and think it is where I had to fix a broken line I did when I changed out the pump. So off the bed will come again for that fix and I ordered a new line. Here is my fix that is now two years old.

Geez look at how nice and rust free everything is! Mine is a rust factory and its 4 yrs newer than yours.

I have a 2004 Sierra with 5.3 engine.

 

Every interchange that I see for the recommended part #214-2149 says it is for 07' up new body styles only. Can anyone confirm this will work on the older body style 2004's?

 

Mine does not have a clip at the canister like some do. The hose is heat on from factory. Instead of putting heater hose from the canister to the old hose, I would think it would be better to use heater hose from the new canister all the way to the filter box. In my mind it would have less chances of any evap leaks this way. - thoughts on doing it this way?

I have a 2006 GMC Sierra 5.3L Ext Cab Short Bed. I can't find my evap solenoid either. Its not at the back of the fuel tank and its not visible sighting down the space between the cab and bed. My charcoal cannister is in front of the tank lying flat with the three ports facing towards the passenger  side of the truck. All three hoses disappear going up and towards the drivers side.  If you don't know where the vent solenoid is, which of the three ports is attached to the vent solenoid?

Is this okay the TSB says to relocate remote filter to top of transmission? I relocated to above fuel pump on top of gas tank will that be okay I don't think any water should be getting up there right? It was a tight spot but doable and it helps to cut the old hose off then just slide out old solenoid between outside of cab and bed and hose from under the truck for those wondering how to get this thing out. So think I'm good with this spot for my filter everyone or should I run it to the top of my transmission? Ty

It's dust that caused the filter location to be shifted above the trans. housing.

So that's not a good spot for it then? It is alittle dusty there I guess. I'll have to get more hose.

Not the best of spots when you see all the debris that collects on top of some tank. It'll probably do fine up there. I'm still running the OE valve on the back of the tank, but then I'm not driving on dusty roads all the time either.

 

Some people have run it up by the gas tank fill hose and I guess it's worked for them

    • are there any codes? with lots of rust, perhaps disconnect/clean both sides of the connection/examine cable ends (the wires) for corrosion going into the sheath & replace if necessary/reconnect ALL the power AND ground cables between the battery, engine, frame, cab, fuse box and starter charm.li (website) has a no-start diagnostic procedure you can work through to get it working.
    • Its no wonder you've gravitated to the oil types and brands you have in later years after trying certain brands and one being a specialty oil or at least very hard to come by up here and the other would have been a commonly found oil of the era and the vastly different outcomes as a result to using the vehicles in question the same distance for an OCI . It shows what marketing hype can do without actually having the product to back up the claims and that is no different now with the insane claims that are written on the side of a bottle of oil from some of the off the shelf oils.    What has surprised me and I was already finding this out before I bought my truck with the GDI engine, that this newer fancy technology that seemingly would suggest better fuel economy/emissions with this high pressure spray of fuel is not in reality kind at all to the engine or at least the oils life. Yet they insist on claiming long OCI with this technology just like they did with the port or similar type fuel injection systems when in reality its a step back in oil life to have a GDI system.    I think the mistake your making Grumpy is that your not sending your samples to Blackstone and getting the feel good glowing report that you can run it another 1000 or more miles and then send another sample where they say run it yet another 1000 miles and on and on it goes until your sending in something that looks a lot like road tar and then they may suggest you change your oil within the next 1000 miles 😆
    • I am guessing that engines of that design back then had a better ability to be abused and survive longer than a new design engine with the long timing chain and the overhead cams and phasers etc. But I would never guess that an engine could go that far and not fail spectacularly or at least die a slow death. 
    • In the 80's 90's I'd run Honda's 7,500 miles between changes using Red Line HP 5W20 and do it for hundreds of thousands of miles with issues. Back in the day it was an SAE 20 with the HTHS of a SAE 30 and SN add load. It was also very polar. Oxidation VOA was over 120. Besides those motors were SPFI and lean burn tech. I could have likely run it longer but never did.    We had a Toyota bought new I ran on Pennzoil's latest and greatest synthetic of the day with "Penthane". A made up word for a very low dose of PAO. Tried 7,500 mile OCI's in that Group III/VI chemistry and the rings tapped out at 90K. Rocker box wasn't as bad as the one Punch put up but it wasn't good either. Also a SPFI motor.    I'm around 3,750 across the board on these GDI monsters and the oil it tapped out by then usually on TBN/TAN crossover and color. Red Line HP Euro.    The AMSOIL SS brochures tell you to follow the OEM values for the service class but that it can be run up to 25K if monitored. I can't imagine what motor could go that distance and not tap out. I've never owned one.    Yes, I know. Lot's of people do. I'm just not going to be one of them. 
    • I knew a guy in the early 80's that bought a new Monte Carlo and ran it a 100,000 miles without ever changing the filter or the oil. Just kept adding. It looked like that inside.
