Intermediate Steering Shaft

I have been reading a lot about the defective intermediate steering shafts in 99-07 Silverado which causes a clunking noise when steering. It sounds like the original steering shaft needs to be replaced with a new re-designed on which is GM part number 19153614.

 

My question, is their a recall notice out about this and are Chevy dealers suppose to pay for this new steering shaft and installation?

No recall was issued on the shaft since it is not a safety issue. Odds are that unless you have lots of previously documented maintenance at a GM dealer concerning that shaft, like I do, that you'll end up paying them to replace it or doing it yourself.

Mine was replaced under warranty in Jan. of '05. (2004 GMC Sierra) It has started again. I checked with the dealership and was told it would be all my expense, even though the shaft has been redesigned. Also was told it could be lower column bearing. What's the process to determine which part it is?

Has anyone done this replacement themselves? My dealer told me it would about $200 for the shaft alone! If I can do it and save some $$ I'd at least like to try!

It's pretty easy, you will need the grease kit for this from your dealer. It costs about $10.00. There are pretty good instructions in the kit. I do the shaft in my 03 suburban about every other year, and in my 00 impala about every 3 years. It takes about 30 minutes in the suburban, 1 hour in the car (A Bit harder to reach in car). Very easy for the shade tree mechanic.
