Ok, I have been an chevy man for a long time but I am having trouble deciding what to buy. I am going to get an 2009 Crew Cab LTZ but I cant decide if I want the 5.3 or the 6.0. Both have AFM. The new 6.0 is a VVT (variable valve timing) motor. There isnt much difference in price or fuel economy (per window stickers). I have heard some compaints about the 6.0 and AFM causing erratic idle, surging, and gear hunting in the transmission. I tow a 3500lb boat and I'm quite sure the 5.3 will do that just fine, but if the price isnt much more, and there isnt much difference in fuel economy, I'd just assume get the 6.0. Does anyone out there have any suggestions -or- real world fuel economy numbers with the 6.0, 6 speed, 3:42s? Thanks in advance.

The 6.0 is great! Buy the biggest motor you can afford.

I have a 6.0 with the 4L70E and I love it. I bet I would love it even more with a 6 speed.

I have said this before and I will say it again...When is the last time you heard someone complain about having too much power?

yup plus the 6.2 is a cheaper moter than the 6.0 per the build your own maybe its cause the 6.0 only comes with the Max pack but sill the 6.2 is coming to my house soon is lots of fun to drive too.

So whats the difference 5.3L and 6.0L on the 09's 30hp? lol. my lil 327 smacks my bud's 5.7 hemi no prob and we have the same small upgrades. Plus with the 5.3L I found its more easier to find a supercharger/turbo kits. If you want to chance loosing factory warranty... Thats my opinion. If you really want to get sticky go to the gmperformance web site look up a crate i.e. LS7 grab the part # goto a gm dealer and get them to swap motors. cheaper doing it then, then putting one in later, plus you can finance it too lol

No, the 6.0 makes 52 more hp and 6.2 makes almost 90 more. Not to mention, they both make quite a bit more torque at a lower rpm. Plus, you stick a custom tune on either of those motors and you will have a beast.

I am not trying to take anything away from the 5.3l. It is a great motor and has a lot of potential, but every upgrade you want to do the 5.3 you can do to the 6.0/6.2. Plus if you don't want to do any upgrades you don't need to, you already have the extra power.

Agree 100%.

I get about 13-14 mpg around town and 16-18 mpg highway with my Vmax 6.0 with AFM turned off. Actually on, I don't see a difference on my truck. I have 4.10's too. I'd bet with the 6-speed, you should see a mile or two better. I've had Zero problems with my truck and it tows like a dream. I've been completely happy with my SLT Vmax and do recommend it. Awesome motor.

The difference in the 5.3 and the 6.0 in the 2009s is:

5.3 315 hp @ 5200 rpm, 338 lb-ft of torque @ 4400 rpm

6.0 367 hp @ 5600 rpm, 375 lb-ft of torque @ 4300 rpm

Difference of: 52HP and 37lb-ft of torque !

The 5.3 = 325 cubic inches, not 327. :)
