6.2l...the Last Of The Big Motors?

Recommended Posts

With the industry going to lower displacement, direct injected, forced induction motors, I think it's quite possible the 6.2L motor is the last of the big motors that GM (or most other manufacturers) is ever going to produce. It's kind of sad when you think about it. I'm sure they will figure out how to make 5.0L direct injected turbocharged motors that make 550hp and get 30+mpg on the highway, but displacement is always nice as it's lower stressed, cheaper to produce, and they sound good.

Anybody else have comments or are bummed this is probably the case?

Provided that they can make them fuel efficient, which they already do, and that people want to buy them, which they already are, they are not going anywhere.

Even back in '07, when I bought my truck, I was already getting the feeling that the days (or at least years) of the "big" motors in "regular" vehicles were numbered. That was a contributing factor (albeit not a BIG one) to my getting my SD. "Get it and enjoy it while you can, before somebody in DC decides I can't!" :seeya:

The trucks will have to make 27 mpg in 2012 and they are not there yet. Expect displacement & HP lower in the future along with smaller vehicles. It took the MFR's from 1973 to 2008 to get good economy & performance expect it to take at least ten years to get it all back.

I'll be shocked if GM produces a larger gas engine for non-commercial use.

I doubt large displacement V8s will be going away completely. Even if half ton trucks stop being available with them, the HD trucks will likely keep them. Look at most turbo/supercharged engines and you'll see the low end torque can be lacking in many cases. This is where big N/A gassers have the advantage for towing and hauling.

I will say it again: Shoulda released the 4.5L (Yes I know it is a diesel but it would potentially solve all of the problems aforementioned)

For a production light duty truck, the 6.2L is going to be the biggest motor we may ever get from a displacement standpoint. That was the point of my original post. Kind of a bummer when you think about it.

Couldn't have said it better myself. :seeya:

yes, the 1/2Ton, as we have known it for the past 10 years or so may change considerably due to fuel consumption and emissions requirements dictated by government regulators.... in my opinion many of the models delivered to the public market have been refined as large rear wheel drive cars anyway ... and these vehicles will be hit by the fuel and emissions expectations....

but there will always be a market demand for a 'heavier duty' truck as a work truck, or a farm truck, or even for a personal truck as a trailer hauler.... I think that the new fuel and emissions requirements have been established for vehicles below GVW 8600 (or something like that).... so as these requirements are phased in, I think we can expect to see a new breed of TRUCK (like the former GM 1500HD line....) that can perform as a work truck, or trailer hauler. New RV sales are going through the roof in our part of the country... and then the RV owners need to have a TRUCK that can pull them... so the market is not going away.
