my truck is an 05 ext cal long bed with an 8.1 i have 2 12,s and a mild amp. i plan on putting a plow on the truck..

so imcurious should i replace the factory 105 amp alternator with another 105 or go to the 145 amp, are the belts the same size?

whats the big diference between the two? why did some trucks get 105,s and others get 145 amp,s

Also what help would i get from the 200 amp if i installed that one. Thanks guys for your help

i run a 145...i beleive the belt was a little bit longer cant remember but make sure you find out before you go to change it LOL. a 145 and two yellow top optima's would do you fine. how many watts is your amp? if its not over 1000 i wouldnt worry about going with 200 amp alt...i mean it wouldnt hurt but i think 145 with two batts would be just fine. my amp is about 1500 watts at 14.5V it draws around 110 amps...i used to have just regular 4 gauge wiring but my lights dimmed SOOO bad. i did big three upgrade also helped ALOT, i used welding cable from BATT ground to frame, alt to batt and battery to amp. 2 farad cap. the sub gets consistant 14 volts after 1000 RPM running a 1 ohm load at the amp. no lights dimming out anymore...but ive never owned a plow i wonder how much they draw?

It will also depend on which stock alt. is on your truck.

Either a CS-130 or a CS-144. The 144 is larger than a 130

and MAY require new mounting brackets.

Also the wiring plugs are different. There are plug n play

adapters avail on line tho.

The 160 amp Delphi unit found on the newer VYU plow prep equipped

trucks is a good choice.

A good alt. rebuild shop may be able to crank up your 105 amp. unit

to 150 or more amps. cheaper and easier than buying a new alt.

But a GOOD alt. rebuild shop is getting hard to find in todays "throw

it away and buy new" society!

Note the size difference:

These guys have the goods and info:

I have done several of these alt. swaps on a few snowplow buds trucks

that were needing more power to run lights, plow, sanders etc. on

their 105 amp. equipped trucks!

Thanks, id like to go atleast with the 145, how hard is it to install the second battery? and will that cause more draw on the alternator.

no...as long as you start with TWO brand new batteries...dont just buy 1 tie it to your old one. that will kill your new battery. start out with two batteries. there are kits you can buy but i dont recommend it. they arent worth the cost, just rig something up on your own wont cost very much.i just used welding cable i found at work when they changed out a bunch of cables were gonna throw it out, took home about 150 feet of it LOL :sigh: ...spray painted one red bought some connecters from electrical shop for like 5 bucks DONE. in your truck should be room right up by the firewall on passenger side. good alternator and two batteries makes a world of difference dude

Heres my setup i currently have and it works great!

280 amp alternator from dc power

+

Odyssey battery

+

Big 3 wire upgrade to all 0 gauge...

=

ultimate power !

A couple of the things I run in my truck...

I have a small 300 watt amp powering 1 10"

55 w HID's in fogs , lows , and 35 w. HID offroad lights..

55 w piaa reverse lights , / led bed lights

12v viair 380 compressor that fills up 2- 5 gal airtanks powering my train horns

Plus all the standard electrical stuff on our trucks..

The way i upgraded was battery first since i was worried about stocker dying this past winter.. Went with an odyssey since they are one of the best out there.. Then put in the alternator , and just recently a couple months ago put in the big 3- 0 gauge wiring to feed the battery all the juice it needs.

Only thing i have left to do is upgrade my power wire to my compressor to 4 awg which is overkill for now but i may get a dual compressor setup down the road.

Go big, or dont bother! I still have my stock 145 which was the HO version... sitting on the shelf in garage .. :sigh:

Still cleaning up some wiring but here is some current pics...

I got the gauge right on pos term to monitor the battery

Don't know of any thing that mounts at the battery. But there are some digital units that can be mounted in the cab. The use a shunt at the battery to measure amps. The will run you a little over $200 bucks though.

That looks good, i have a freind that has a stereo shop and he will probably get me the goog/thick wireand connectors at cost.

what gauge is factory? and what did you use?

So i should definitly see and improvement with a 200+ amp alternator, 2 new batteries, and upgraded wiring??

oh man night and day... im running 1/0 gauge welding cable for eeeeverything  ...when i changed from walmart 4 gauge crap to what ive done now. woofer sounds soooooo much cleaner...i get a STEADY 13.8-14.8 to the amp at all times...im not goin after a plow or anything i just like BANGIN stereos

So i just grabbed the 145 amp delphi alternator and it went right into place the original belt fit also..

Now i just gotta grab two fresh batteries and the good heavy gauge wiring.

1/0 wire is what i went with..

the 145 amp is actually what i took out of my truck,

I highly recommend the odyssey battery. But if you are getting 2 that will be pricey. BUT, that WILL be the ultimate power for a plow.
