Resale Value?

Why does it always seem that imports have a higher resale value? I have been shopping around for a used s-10/sonoma or a small truck and it seems that used toyotas and nissans are always about $3-4k more. Why is that? I am a big fan of chevy and would prefer to get the gm but not if there's something wrong with them that makes them worth less. Thanks in advance for any replies.

Public perception of quality is what makes Japanese imports have a higher resale value. The general public THINKS that Japanese vehicles are built better than American vehicles and hence will pay more for a used one than an American vehicle. This trend applies especially to Hondas. The public is going to pay several thousand more for a used '08 Accord than a used '08 Malibu. It's just the way of the world man.

resale value is also hurt on GM s beacuse they discount so much off the new sticker which affects the used market. They list a truck at $37K and sell it for $32K, what do you think is the effect on a used one. :thumbs:

And the media does all to support the Japanese mfr's too.

as much as it pains me to write this...

Here is the experience with my 02 GMC-

As delivered = new front windshield needed. Defect in original. 3 foot deep scratch from p-side to driver side.

As delivered = Headliner was cut about an inch short on the p-side. You could see the foam of the headliner.

2 miles = New front windshield again. There was a hand print between the laminate in the one they used to replace it!

8k = lazy shift. Basically told it was "designed" that way. Power programmer made it go away.

10k = new gas cap needed. Started getting evap error codes.

25k = new battery needed. Dealer would not replace it.

40k = new power steering pump @ $450

50k = new fuel pump @ $600

65k = new hydroboost unit @ 650

Do I even need to talk about MPG vs. foreign cars/trucks?

Quality and perception influence the resale value greatly. Perception is tightly nit with true life experiences either first hand or word of mouth.

Line stops at foreign auto makers is somewhere about 200 a day to address quality issues. American made line stops, about 10...PER MONTH!

20/20 did a great report on the quality and perception of GM made cars and I don't think any of it was a surprise to anyone.

Maybe part of the "new" GM will be better quality.

And on the total flip side of that.....2002 Silverado LT purchased new by me.......80K miles, still running on original everything w/ the exception of the battery which I changed out before the Delco battery was even dead. I don't think your experience is indicative of the total output of GM. We could talk about Toyota's blunders too but who cares....I wouldn't buy one if it were half the price. :thumbs:

Although the Malibu has improved greatly in recent years, it is nowhere near the same class as an Accord/Toyota. I own a 2002 Accord and until proven otherwise, will not just THINK that Japanese cars are built better than American cars, but BELIEVE it, too.

Car-wise, GM has a lot of catching up to do.

That being said, I wouldn't trade my Silvy for 1000 Tundras. :thumbs:

I second that! You would not believe how tight the quality tolerances are on a line at GM these days. Just remember that people that tell you stories are trying to make it as interesting as possible for the listener.

My mom bought a new 2002 toyota sequoia sr5 4wd back in 02 and when she TRADED it in around 2004, it had 50k miles, the check engine light was on, the traction control, 4 wheel drive and ABS lights were also on, the cats were bad, and needed new tires. Ford gave her 500 dollars more than what she paid for, as soon as she signed the papers it was on the truck being delivered to someone up in memphis. Now everytime I trade one of my american trucks in I lose about 6-8K no matter how good of shape its in.

That sounds impressive but its also a trade in. Its not resale though and that is 2 different things. By the way I like the color of your truck. :thumbs:

thank you. I know there 2 different things but i couldnt believe that they gave 500 more on trade in, resale value wouldve been another couple of thousand probably

My point is that on trade in they can inflate the price so much more then its worth, by just raising the price on theres or not giving anything off. I do not know the particulars of your mom's deal. But if she got (what ever ford she bought) at a good price then that must be the dumbest dealer ever.
