How about the spoilers on the fiberglass caps or on the fiberglass tonneau covers.

I never understood those.

I read that a smoothly tapered rear end can improve fuel mileage - someone posted a link about a car (Geo Metro?) that got like 100 mpg with a lot of aerodynamic body modifications - but I think truck spoilers are so small that there are no practical benefits.

It was probably part of some appearance package and others "borrowed" the concept.

The aftermarket crap is a joke but technically the little cap GM and others have put on tailgates the past few years do have some tangible benefits for fuel economy by reducing drag.

Wow, you guys saved me a lot of money! My long running mod to-do list just got wiped to zero! Thanks for the update on good taste! (ha ha)

Just read all 18 pages of this thread... couldn't tear myself away to see what would be slammed next!

I'm actually surprised the aftermarket sponsors of this forum haven't asked the mods to shut this thread down already! Bad for business!

Ok, on to my contributions...

1. While someone already mentioned oversized wheels (ie, +24's with razor thin profile tires) on dually trucks, I'd like to add that oversized tires with high profiles mounted on stock dually rims are a worthless mod also, and even a dangerous one.

Let's say the stock tire on a dually is a 215 or 225. Lots of guys will seek out 235 or 245 tires to mount on the same stock dually rims. This is a worthless mod that is easily detectable by the 1" to 1/2" gap between the back tire pairs. One inch is not enough gap. It looks fine when empty, but when the truck is loaded to the rated GVWR, the weight on the tires even at their maximum inflation pressure bulbs out the crossection at the loaded radius, and the sum of distension of both tires reduces the gap to zero or less, especially when running over potholes or over railroad tracks or any undulation of the road. This intermittant (or constant) dually tire kissing invites catastrophic failure induced by friction and heat.

The irony is that people often increase tire size to increase tire capacity, in order to have a "safer" margin to carry more weight. A sad and misguided fallacy that is a worthless mod. First, the larger tire reduces power to the ground low end gearing, making a taller final drive ratio that lugs the motor out of it's power band when moving a heavy load from a standsitll. Second, no amount of additional tire capacity will increase the trucks gvwr capacity. The OEM already speced enough tire to match the trucks frame, engine, transmission, suspension, and axle capacities. And thirdly, when two tires in a dually pair contact each other under full load, the truck is less safe at it's rated load.

Most people look for tire clearance when the truck is empty, and standing still. Even if the truck was fully loaded, standing still is not usually when the oversized tires in a dually pair will contact each other. The contact occurs dynamically at speed, when the shape of the tire changes dramatically while rolling, turning, cornering, and absorbing variations in road surfaces and the jounce and rebounds of suspension deflections.

So, oversize tires on stock dually rims = WORTHLESS MOD. I cringe every time I see this, and move over a few lanes away when I can. I think that if the owner considered his or her truck as cargo carrying device, not as a supersized barge to haul around an inflated ego, then they would laugh at themselves for how stupid their oversized tires look on stock rims on a dually truck.

2. Another worthless mod that hasn't yet been mentioned in these 18 pages: Tailight guards. Seriously? $130 for flimsy metal bars to cover a tail light lens that costs $40? And exactly what danger is going to suddenly swoop up from behind and smash ONLY the taillights?

Even if those oversized tires could kick up a rock that magically defied physics long enough to arc around and boomerang back into the tailights, sailing right inbetween the bars of these so called "tail light guard", a new tail light lens would still be required. Worthless mod.

Window flags and sports logo junk. I live near Vancouver and every other car has a big Canucks sticker on the back window or a bunch of stupid flags(Not to mention they always drive around like idiots, honking the horn and yelling whenever they win a game). These flags cost about $15 each at Walmart, and everyone has 4 of them, one in each window. Congratulations, you wasted $60 on 4 pieces of plastic/fabric to show everyone you're a true hockey fan. I don't even want to know what a giant logo on the window costs... Whats the purpose? So other Canucks fans will know you're a Canucks fan too and wave as they drive by? Those stupid flags should be illegal for A) Making you look like a retard, and B) What if one flies off hits someone in the head?

Any accessories on a "pretend you own" vehicle (lease). I just don't get it. A neighbor of mine just leased a new BMW and wants new wheels. Why?

That's a good one.......I don't get this either. It's not your car and not going to be your car. Leave it as is. Alread wasting money paying for it every month only to give it back when your finished. No need to waste anymore money buying things you are going to have to take off and attempt to sell down the road.

Cash is king. So is, for the most part, stock. Ya can't out-engineer the folks at GM; they know what they're doing when they put these MOR vehicles on the road that satisfy most uses and conditions thrown at them.

Here ya go! A 6" suspension with a 2" or 3" body lift, 26" wheels and street tires on a Z71 4x4. Also, and autozone special!
