Another Cheap Mod

So the other day I posted pics of my 10 sierra with $5.00 ruberized under coated rear inner fenders. Well here is my no shit $8.00 2" leveling kit.

Here's the break down.

$2.00 for 4 7/16x3-1/2" grade 8 bolts and 4 nuts, 8 flat washers and 4 lock washers.

$6.00 for a 12" piece of DOM round stock.

=$8.00

I cut the round stock down into 4 1-1/4" pieces then installed them in the same manner as "Zone" and "RCX" recommends on there website. :dunno: .

Hmm,Well as long as the round stock is strong enough and holds up,It looks good to me! :dunno:

Yeah, it's DOM. I was looking at the pics of there kits. It looks like DOM with a connecting bar welded to it.

Now my question......Why didn't one of us think of that idea sooner!!! :dunno:

probably b/c the "connecting bar" provides horizontal stability to the longer bolts, which makes it safer..... I'll pay the extra money for a part properly engineered.

Are you sure grade 8.8 bolts will be strong enough? I went with grade 10.9 with a zinc coating like the OEM bolts. What grade are the nuts and what compression strength are the washers?

DOM tubing...... Yeah it will be there as long as the bolt can hand the pressure.....

That makes sense.

Grade 8 standard bolts are pretty tough bolts. did you use fine or coarse thread. i would think lateral movement in high speed turns would make the sleeves act like a pivot point and create slightly more sway. But i could be wrong. Looks good BTW.

Good idea, but I would of done a few things different. I would of first, connected them. Second, I would figure a way to have a wider/broader base....they are holding the truck up. If they work, great, I would just feel better with my "mods." Good thinking though man!

Honestly.. i feel sick to my stomach looking at that.

Please, for the safety of yourself and others take that off of there!

The coil body is not loading those boats axially, there is a bending moment involved. See those "bumps" on the lower control arm? They're there for a reason! They resist the force associated with the coil body trying to slide down the control arm. Not only that, but there's torsional loading that is now not accounted for. Ever wonder why the RC and other leveling kits aren't just 2 seperate blocks??? oh my god... just trust me on this one. Take it off.

I don't EVER pull this card... but im a mechanical engineer with a certificate in aerospace engineering and I worked myself through college as an ASE certified auto tech. I now do failure mode analysis and redesign components for one of the major systems for our U.S. aircraft carriers (prior to that job I designed aerospace evacuation systems for private industry). Why am i telling you this? Because i SERIOUSLY want you to know that i am not BS"ing you here. It's not a matter of "IF" those bolts will fail.. it's WHEN.

And just think about it... what do you think would happen if one fails? You'll definitely be losing control... on-coming traffic? flip? Dude its just not worth it... pay $60 for a spacer
