Is Windshield Replacement Common?

Hello All. I parked my truck and walked into work yesterday and everything was fine. I get in it to leave and there is a 12" crack accross the windshield. Over Thanksgiving I know I had a rock hit the window, but I could not find a chip. Apparently it was right beside the pilar on the drivers side. I have never had a windshield crack. I once had a Tacoma and it had rock chips all over, but never cracked. Is this something that I am going to have to look forward to every year? The truck only has 6K miles on it.

Tough break man, I've never seen or heard of one cracking without a pretty good sized chip to get it started. I'm one of the unlucky ones that seems to get hit with every stray rock on the road. I've put 4 windshields in mine since 2003.... I've been driving for a year and a half with three chips in mine, no splits yet.

Most insurance companies will pay to have the rock chips sealed to keep them from splitting further if you catch them soon enough...

My 01 had 4 chips in the glass when I traded it. All had been repaired and you could barely tell they were there. With the weather being cold out if you use the defrost and the window warms it will crack easier with an unrepaired chip in it. Due to the expansion and contraction of the glass. When I was driving a semi for a living I got a chip in the glass. While driving I hit a large pothole and watched as the crack went all the way across the window in about 2 seconds.

when i got a small crack in my suburbans windsheild, it was dead of winter with about 15 degree weather and after about 1 week, it expanded all the way across.

Most of the places around here are CHEAP to fix chips, and will even come out to your place for not too much $$$

Sorry to hear about your bad luck

I work with a guy who has a cracked windshield every year from rock chips, mind you he drives a Echo.

I've only had 2 chips in my 10 years driving experience, none of them have turned to cracks, and I only had one filled and thats on the truck I drive now.

My truck too, must be a rock to the windshield magnet. Currently awaiting my third windshield replacement and mine is spider cracked all over the place from two chips. The bitch about mine is that I have to now have the roof fixed because the last time the glass company cut the windsheild out, they chipped the paint with their urethane saw and now, the roof has a nice rust spot the size of a quarter on it. Even with connections at the body shop its still going to cost me $300 to fix the rust while the windshield is out.

It depends on where the chip is, how big it is and other variables. Temperature changes can also affect tension placed on the glass that can cause cracking. Luckily - these windshields aren't too expensive and your insurance my help with the repair. I think a $100.00 deductible is fairly common on glass breakage these days.

I had a rock chip mine in exactly the same place you're describing. I heard but couldn't see or find out where it hit while driving, but it spread all the way across my driver side within about 30 seconds of it happening. Upon inspection, it hit within a 1/8th of an inch of the edge of the glass on the pillar. Seems like a bad spot for sure.

GM glass is not better or worse than any of the others because the Fed Gov dictates the standards to them. Tough luck.

windshields are alot weaker in the winter being that they are frozen and the inside is warm its thermal shock that cracks alot of them

check your insurance. in my state and others there is no deductible on glass.

I know the feeling, I bought my truck brand new in '06 & just one month later I was driving on a 30mph road and just one small rock was thrown up & hit just below driver side wiper. I drove for another half mile to destination & just that quick it went up an inch & right all the way across the windshield. That was in Alaska & didn't bother getting it fixed since they used boulders for snow traction & I ended up with a spider for a windshield over the next two years. I only got it fixed a year after I moved to Georgia & that was only because I was informed I would get a ticket (friendly cop reminder). Can't blame the glass since it held up through 40k+ miles in Alaska without additional problems, other than cracked.

Rocks are attracted to every windshield I sit behind.......

My 99 has had one a year since i got it...... Rock pops, heck I carry a kit to fix them with me at all times..... Take like 15 minutes to repair a chip/crack. NAPA Balkamp 765-1522 they are like 11 bucks.... I also have a diamond bur tip I cut into the glass with in the truck. The kit works pretty good too boot.

I follow the directions all the way down to the sunlight curring, in stead I take a match light it and heat the windshield with a couple matches in that spot.. Wipe clean on the inside and remove from the outside and scrape with razor blade.
