Remote Start & Theft Deterrent Problem

Hi Everyone,

A buddy of mine came to me with this one, and I am stumped.

First, the vehicle is a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado K2500 crew cab Duramax diesel with the LT trim package. It is stock in all regards with the exception of a 6" suspension lift and an additional 10" subwoofer. What we've noticed is that when he uses the remote start feature, the truck will start per usual, but when he gets to his destination things get awkward.

After the truck is parked, the key is turned OFF, and my buddy gets out (driver door now closed), the radio, lights, windows, etc. all remain operable AND the truck will not start any more. The key will not start it nor will the remote start on the fob. Instead, the information center reads "check theft deterrent system." The only way we can get it to start again is to disconnect both batteries, let it sit for a few hours, and then try again.

I can't help but think that the radio (subwoofer installation done by previous owner) may be causing the theft deterrent system to act up. I know the radio has a theft deterrent that reads the vehicle VIN and will not work if it does not get a return confirmation from the ECU. However, the radio works fine and so does the alarm even when you get this fault. We have not read the codes from the ECU yet because we haven't had time.

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!
