Why wouldn't you under coated it or install rust control if you live close to the Pacific with all that salt in the air.

Could some of it come from rail line dust?

Whats Rail Line Dust?

I don't know about under your truck. But every winter I get little tiny rust looking specs that go from the bottom of my vehicle to half way up the doors. At first glance it looks like rust, but it is even on the plastic bumper on the terrain. Every spring I have to buff my truck and her suv to remove them

Has to be something with the road brine as these rust specs never appear in the summer

Maybe Canada does something different, but it is not standard for these trucks to be undercoated. The frame is coated in stuff that inhibits rust, but on the under side of the body there are several places that have exposed, unprotected (except by a small layer of paint) surfaces. You need to have the truck treated with rust proofing/inhibiting if you live close to all that salt and road junk from the winter.

i hope that the rust you are talking about is only surface rust on the rear axle housing, front end control arms, and hubs. Such rust is normal due to these components being made of cast iron. In the past it was very common to see brand new vehicles with completely rusty cast iron master cylinders, brake calipers and drums. They did not paint any of those items and they were covered with surface rust on brand new cars and trucks.

I would be concerned if there was rust on the painted underbody sheet metal though. I would not worry about surface rust on the frame, unless it is really excessive.

It is common near train tracks, thus then name. I had a big problem with this last year when we had tons of snow. Little shavings from the snow plows where all over the street and they stick to the finish and then rust. So if you are someplace where they have been doing a lot of plowing it could very well be the problem. A little buffing or clay bar will take it off.

Take it to Krown and get it coated, if you do it within one year of the in service date, and get it reapplied every year, you get a lifetime warranty from Krown for rust through.

Posted

I dont believe you get the lifetime warranty with Krown unless the vehicle is new, but new might mean 1-2yrs

When we did my wife's 1 day old Honda last year, it got the lifetime warranty, but when we did my 2007 Denali at the same time for the first time, I was told because its not new, it did not include a lifetime warranty

When vehicles are transported from the manufacturer by rail, iron dust particles created by

friction between train wheels and the track settle on the finish. When exposed to oxygen

and moisture, this dust corrodes and become embedded in the finish

Its not standard in Canada to have your vehicle undercoated, when I bought my truck I had the underneath sprayed but they did a poor job for what I paid, hit parts of my driveshaft it was just sloppy all over, yeah any parts they missed is rust colored, where I've used a jack its a bit rust colored but this summer I'll touch it up. Its that rubbery/black type stuff they spray on there.

That stuff they spray on the roads now does not help at all.

Trucks sold here in the US are not undercoated either from the factory. Only the frame is coated with sticky wax like coating.
