6.2l Lifter Noise

Just noticed this morning some lifter noise after a cold start.Outside air temps in the 20s here in Vermont.Truck does not use any oil that I can tell.Should I be concerned?14,xxx miles on the truck and loving every minute.

I get that to, also 14,xxx miles on the truck. Almost sounds like a real quite diesel noise. (at least i think thats what that noise is) Hopefully it's normal cause my truck still runs like a top!!

I've never experienced lifter noise but I've always ran full synthectics after the first 500-900 miles.

 

I don't believe you should be worried. Check your oil level and put your mind to rest.

I aslo run synthetics in my engine, but i have only done it since about 10,000 miles.

21,000km full synthetic oil.....when its cold my truck has very noticable lifter knock while i drive the first few miles

I havent noticed anything with my truck, it was in the 20's when I went out this morning. My old 2000 (5.3) had a noticable "tick" at startup. Had it in and was told it was nromal early on, gm even gave me a 100K warranty. Never had an issue with it.

 

Quick question do you park outside? My old truck was parked outside for the 1st 5 yrs I had it. My new truck is always garaged and it is 45+ in there.

My 2011 6.2 does it to on startup but it stops after about 2 minutes, just a light tapping sound. I figure it just takes a little for the oil to get to the lifter valleys on a cold startup. Only does it when its very cold out and vehicle hasnt been started in awile.

And here I thought I was the only one.....

Heard the lifter noise about a week ago during cold start up and was freakin out, truck only has 11,000kms and I'm running mobil1 synthetic.

I always let the motor run for a few mins. before pulling away and never hammer the throttle till the motor is up to operating temp.

Mine does it when cold, pretty confident its the old short skirt pistons knocking, just like every other gm V8 made in the last 10 years. Nothing to worry about.

I park in the garage, but it is unheated, so it is only a few degrees warmer then outside. So it warms up pretty quickly and the noise goes away once warm.

I don't have a 6.2L engine but I do have an iron block and I've heard ticking only on the coldest morning here in CA. And that was only for a few seconds. If it doesn't use oil I wouldn't worry.

Alright folks, with this generation of engines in the GMT-800s and 900s, you WILL hear CSK and lifter noise, it's just an unfortunate thing about how they designed them. Does not matter if you run synthetic or regular dyno. Does not matter if it is brand new or if it has 500,000 miles. Many trucks will do it, some will not. Don't loose any sleep over it and just drive the dang thing. And no, it does not matter that you may have paid $40,000+ on your truck, the engine is still going to do it.

I have noticed a little cold start knock on the cold mornings this winter. Sounds a bit like a diesel for 30-60 seconds. I've got 6000 km on my truck.
