Add V4 Mode Indicator?

I bought a 2010 Silverado 1500 Crew 4x4 LT, 5.3L. The dealer told me that all LT's had the DoD V4 mode, but I noticed that some LTs had a computer on the dashboard to show V4 mode real time, and others do not have that computer. The truck I went with did not have that computer so I don't know 1) when the truck is in V4 mode or 2) if I really have DoD on the truck?

 

If the DoD is standard on my truck, is there any way to tap into a wire in the harness and add an LED on the dash to indicate when V4 mode is in use and out? If I'm on the highway a lot I'd like to know when I'm cruising if it is actually being utilized or not.

Yeah only the dic will show you if you have a dic and it's on the right view. your 2010 5.3 has the dod, but i thought lt's had the dic?

Save your money. My 2011' Silverado does show when if kicks into V4 mode but it only goes into V4 mode when I am decelerating. I have never seen it go into V4 mode with the cruise controll engaged on the highway at any speed. What a big disapointment this was to see.

 

By contrast, my 2011 V6 Honda Accord will run in V4 ECO mode all day while I have the cruise controll set at 75mph! I'm convinced that Honda is years ahead of GM with veriable cylinder management.

Or, and this is just a wild guess, your honda accord doesn't weigh 5500lbs, have the aerodynamics of a brick, and run on big tires. Mine will stay in V4 on flat ground on the highway till about 50mph and then always goes into V4 when you are going down even a slight grade.

The DIC has more functionality than just the V-8 to V-4 mode. Its a cheap and easy mod why not do it?

DrShock, this link tells the whole story and covers your truck, whether you want to replace your panel with a new one with the switch already installed, or just buy the switch, cut out the hole in your existing panel and snap it in yourself. Many GM parts outlets have the panel and switch available, so shop around for the best deal. Or get it from your local GM dealership, although it'll probably cost more. It's an easy 10 minute swap that most of us have done.

Your talking about a 2000 lb V6 dropping to 4 cylinders... not a near 6000 lb V8 dropping to 4 cylinders. It hardly stands a chance. If that technology was in a Impala... you'd see the same benefit as the honda has :cheers: You can't convince me for a second that Honda's tech is years ahead of GM. They might manage the tech better, but what they have, it's not better :lol:

And when the mighty 5.3 liter GM V8 drops off into 4-cylinder operation, it's still using more displacement than a 2.4 liter honda 4-cylinder. And sounds better.

when you get the DIC panel, press the top button on the DIC panel to where you are viewing instantaneous MPGs on the odometer screen, it will tell you if it is in V8 or V4 mode.

 

FYI, i have seen mine drop to V4 mode while cruising on a flat road, but only below 64 mph, never above that. and on a declined road at any cruising speed depending on how steap it is.

Would someone care to add a "seamless transition" meter to their instrument panel? This way you will know when the 4 to 8 cylinder switching is no longer seamless, and you have something to complain about. :cheers:

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
