what is the difference between auto 4x4 and AWD what is better ?

 

 

The AWD t-case has an open center differential so that means 100% of the power can go to one axle. If you're in bad enough weather, this could mean you just spin the front or rear wheels while the other end does nothing. With 4WD (any type, not just auto) the center differential can lock, and provide a 50/50 split of the power no matter what. This will keep you going when conditions really deteriorate. This is my first truck with auto 4WD and I almost never use it. If conditions are even marginally questionable, I put it in 4Hi and drive with caution.

Used to have 4wd for possible necessity, driving/camping in Alaska can get tricky in rural areas. Now it's purely for fun except Auto 4wd is nice when it rains.

what is harder on the truck leaving it in 4 HI or is it better to leave it in 4 auto ? how quick does it react .

4 Auto can be left on all the time, it's reaction time is very quick (used it several times). 4hi is great for it's purpose of bad road conditions but can not be left in on dry pavement or you will bind up the front axle and possible damaging your front end.

Well in conditions where the road is slippery there should be no difference. If you're worried about traction in something where the road won't have "give" like rain for example then I'd probably use auto. It seems plenty quick.

There is no limit as far as I know but if you're in 4WD and doing 60 or 70, you're either driving a tropy truck in the Baja or you're a massive idiot for driving that fast in poor conditions.

Sorry guys, I've been outta town this whole week for extra training....Soon as I get back to read the posts, all heck was broken out...between some Ford fan....Tisk Tisk....I will NOT buy a Dodge, Ford, or Toyota....Unless I got a really good deal on one, I guess its how I've been raised.

 

S/D, I've ruled that out....I rather have 4WD than an AWD truck. Now, Im just gonna wait til the next Gen that comes out next year. Does ANYONE know for sure when they come out? If I don't like them, but I'm pretty sure I will. I'll just get a '12 one.

I am pretty sure there is a limit . Those parts in the front turning those speeds I dont think are meant to turn that fast ...

What parts? The front axles always turn, even in 2hi. The only additional parts that turn in 4hi are the front driveshaft and a gear in the front diff before the actuator.

 

4hi has no speed limit.
