4L60E drain plug seaping

Recommended Posts

I just changed did a pan drop on my truck and replaced the factory pan with a Dorman pan with a drain plug. I've got the plug as tight as I can but there is a very tiny bit of oil seaping out from around the copper washer. It's not dripping, it's barely seaping.

How can I keep it from seaping? Should I get another drain plug or replace the copper washer with a rubber one?

Any other suggestions?

So, you put the new pan with plug on there, and right out of the package it started leaking? (Without you even dorking around with the plug?) I've had some quality problems with Dorman in the past.

Yea. It's not leaking, just seaping. There is fluid visible around the copper gasket but it's not puddling or anything, just seaping out. I'm going to check it in the morning before I leave for work and see if it's actually dripping by then.

I'm thinking adding a rubber gasket might help.

Also, when I was inspecting the drain plug, it looked like 2 of the threads were flattened a little like it was cross-threaded. Maybe that is where the leak is coming from.

I might pick up a rubber gasket and see if there is a replacement drain plug at autozone or something. Does anybody know what the drain plug thread size is?

Out of curiosity, did you have any clearance issues when removing or installing the pan?

Try a new copper washer first or drain plug as the rubber gasket probably will not hold up.

You can get a combination copper and rubber gasket for it. It will hold up until the next time you pull the plug. Get someone to help you. Pull the plug, stick you finger in the hole, pass the plug to your helper and have him swap the gasket. Then just re-install. You'll lose less than a qt. of fluid

Nope. No issues at all. Some people have said that they have had to remove either the front drive shaft or the exhaust crossover pipe. I don't have to remove either.

I emailed Dorman and they are sending me a new drain plus and a couple new seals/washers. This is the one he said he's sending:

Sounds like you got it taken care of. At least Dorman is stepping up. Still a pain in the a** though.

Same here. Another company that seems to stand by their product with good customer service.

Somebody on the trailvoy.com forums said they had the same problem and they replaced the gasket with one of their white nylon washers and that helped him. Advanced carries all of the gaskets so I can always go pick up more when needed.

Yep. We put about 30 of their pans on our work trucks. Every one of them seeped. They just sent us a box of the seals. No problems anymore. And as I said, they will last until you remove the plug
